The history of Cagayan Valley, Philippines, includes Spanish colonization, World War II, and the post-war period:
Spanish colonization
In 1581, Spanish Captain Pable de Carreon led a group of 100 armed men to explore Cagayan to convert the natives to Christianity and establish a mission. The region was called Provincia de Cagayan and included the present-day provinces of Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Batanes, and parts of Kalinga, Apayao, and Aurora.
World War II
The Japanese Imperial Army dug in at Balete Pass in Nueva Vizcaya and held out against American and Filipino forces for three months. The pass was later renamed Dalton Pass in honor of General Dalton, USA, who was killed in the fighting.
Post-war period
After the war, the Philippines gained its independence and contact with the rest of the country increased. The airport was rehabilitated, and media and radio communications helped to reduce cultural isolation.
Other notable events
The discovery of the Homo luzonensis species in Callao Cave in Peñablanca, Cagayan. The formation of the province of Isabela in 1856, which included parts of Cagayan and Nueva Vizcaya.
The name Cagayan is said to come from the word carayan, which means "river" and refers to the river that runs through the valley from north to south. Another theory is that the name comes from the word tagay, a type of plant that grew in abundance in the north.
