Envi and Media Groups Joined Forces to Improve QC Kids' Access to Educational Materials
TWO non-government organizations joined forces to improve the access to educational reading materials of marginalized kids in Quezon City by donating a total of 3,376 K-12 books to the QC Public Library last Monday, June 19, 2023 during the City Government's Regular Flag Raising Ceremony.
The books were personally turned over by the officers of Kapatiran ng mga Mamamahayag sa Pilipinas (KMP) and Ban Toxics Philippines (BAN Toxics) to the officials of Quezon City headed by Mayor Joy Belmonte and Public Library officer-in-charge (OIC) Ms. Mariza G. Chico.
"As the professional sector representative of the QC Council of Sectoral Representatives (QC-CSR) of the City Development Council (CDC), it is our primary duty to support the City Government, under the leadership of Mayor Belmonte to achieve the goals set within their 14-Point Agenda which include ensuring a high-quality education to all of their constituents," KMP president and Professional Sector Representative Rjhay E. Laurea said.
"We were very thankful to Ban Toxics Philippines by trusting our group to facilitate the donation of the books they were able to collect from various stakeholders and passed it down to the Quezon City Government through our Quezon City Public Library (QCPL)," Laurea added.
Laurea is also the president of Kiwanis Club of Quezon City Legends, a branch of an international CSO with an advocacy to protect and uplift the childrens' rights, welfare and interests. The group also supported the program.
Aside from being a member of the CDC, the QC-CSR is also the interim executive committee of the People's Council of Quezon City (PCQC) composed of 50 sector representatives elected by the accredited civil society organizations (CSOs) of the QC LGU from 23 sectors.
"It is our duty as civil society organization to reach out to schools and communities and facilitate programs and projects that will help alleviate their condition and contribute for a safe and healthy environment," BAN Toxics executive director Mr. Rey San Juan said.
"As stewards of the earth, we have the responsibility to protect our common home, protect our children, for a toxic-free and waste-free future," he added.
The book donation was part of BAN Toxics Philippines' Toxic-Free and Waste-Free Schools Program (TFSP) which encourages educational institutions in all levels to adopt sound chemicals and waste management in their operations for a healthy environment.
Book donation drive doesn't only provide free books to marginalized students that have limited access to information, it is also a way to reduce waste papers because it encourages book owners to donate books they no longer need instead of throwing it away. It also helps in improving the quality of education in a community.
For their part, the QC Government extended their gratitude to the groups as it encouraged more CSOs to get involved in participatory governance through PCQC.

The turn over ceremony was also witnessed by QC-CDC CSO Representative to the Execom Mr. Brian Lu who said: "Both KMP of the professional sector and BAN Toxics of the environmental sector are accredited CSOs of the QC Government, we thank them for setting an example to other CSOs that this is what people's participatory government means - a collaboration between the government and the civil society." # # #

Grupong Pangkalikasan at Midya Nagsanib Puwersa para Mapabuti ang Pag-abot ng Babasahing Pang-edukasyon sa mga Kabataan ng QC
DALAWANG non-government organizations ang nagsanib ng puwersa para mapabuti pa ang pag-abot ng mga batang mag-aaral ng Lungsod Quezon sa mga babasahing pang-edukasyon matapos nga na magbigay ang mga ito ng kabuuang 3,376 na aklat ng K-12 sa Quezon City Public Library (QCPL) noong nakaraang Lunes, Hunyo 19, 2023 habang isinasagawa ang regular na Flag Raising Ceremony ng Pamahalaang Lungsod.
Personal na iniabot ng mga opisyal ng Kapatiran ng mga Mamamahayag sa Pilipinas (KMP) at ng Ban Toxics Philippines (BAN Toxics) ang mga nasabing aklat sa mga opisyal ng Lungsod Quezon na pinangungunahan ni Mayor Joy Belmonte at ni QCPL officer-in-charge (OIC) Ms. Mariza G. Chico.
"Bilang kinatawan ng sektor ng mga propesyunal sa QC Council of Sectoral Representatives (QC-CSR) ng City Development Council (CDC), pangunahing tungkulin namin ang suportahan ang Pamahalaang Lungsod, sa ilalim ng pamumuno ni Mayor Belmonte, upang maabot ang mga layunin nito na nakapaloob sa kanilang 14-Point Agenda kung saan kabilang ang pagbibigay ng mataas na kalidad ng edukasyon sa kanilang nasasakupan,” sabi ni KMP president at Professional Sector Representative Rjhay E. Laurea.
"Nagpapasalamat kami sa Ban Toxics Philippines na ipinagkatiwala nila sa amin ang pag-facilitate ng donasyon ng mga aklat na kanilang nakolekta mula sa iba’t ibang stakeholder at nang pormal itong maiabot sa Pamahalaan ng Lungsod Quezon sa pamamagitan ng pampublikong aklatan ng lungsod,” dagdag pa ni Laurea.
Si Laurea ay pangulo rin ng isa pang organisasyong sumuporta sa proyekto - ang Kiwanis Club of Quezon City Legends, isang sangay ng internasyunal na CSO na ang adbokasiya ay protektahan at pangalagaan ang karapatan, kagalingan at interes ng mga bata.
Maliban sa pagiging kasapi ng CDC, ang QC-CSR ay nagsisilbi ring pansamantalang executive committee ng People's Council of Quezon City (PCQC) na binubuo ng 50 sector representatives mula sa 23 sektor na hinalal ng mga kinikilalang civil society organizations (CSOs) ng Pamahalaang Lungsod.
"Tungkulin namin bilang civil society organization na makipag-ugnayan sa mga paaralan at sa mga komunidad at magsagawa ng mga proyekto at programa na makakatulong na mapagaan ang kanilang kondisyon at makapag-ambag para sa mas ligtas at malusog na kapaligiran,” pahayag naman ni BAN Toxics executive director Mr. Rey San Juan.
"Bilang tagapangalaga ng daigdig, may responsibilidad tayo na protektahan ang ating pangkalahatang tahanan, protektahan ang ating mga kabataan, para sa isang hinaharap na malaya sa mga lason at basura,” dagdag pa niya.
Ang book donation ay bahagi ng Toxic-Free and Waste-Free Schools Program (TFSP) project ng BAN Toxics kung saan hinihikayat nito ang mga institusyong pang-edukasyon sa lahat ng antas na magsagawa ng mabuting pangangasiwa ng kanilang mga basura at kemikal habang nag-o-operate, nang sa gayon ay maisakatuparan din ang pagkakaroon ng malusog na kapaligiran.
Hindi lamang umano nakakapagbigay ng libreng aklat sa mahihirap na estudyanteng may limitasyon sa pagkuha ng mga impormasyon ang book donation drive sapagkat nakakatulong din ito na mabawasan ang mga basurang papel dahil hinihikayat nito ang mga nagmamay-ari ng libro na i-donate na lamang sa halip na itapon ang mga aklat na hindi na nila kailangan. Nakakatulong din ito sa pagpapabuti ng kalidad ng edukasyon sa komunidad.
Pinasalamatan naman ng QC Government ang dalawang grupo kasabay ng paghikayat nito sa iba pang CSOs na makipagtulungan sa pamahalaan sa pamamagitan ng PCQC.
