Director’s Statement :
My son, Oyen, has been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) since he was two years old. For the next 13 years, me and my family have tried our best to address his condtion. This personal experience has tested our commitment, stretched our capabilities, and redefined our love not only for Oyen but for our entire family. It has brought about profound shifts in our career paths and our perspectives on life, particularly as we contemplate the future. Through it all, we have gained invaluable knowledge and insights. However, it is disturbing to know that despite the statistic of one in every 100 Filipinos, or approximately 1.2 million people, are diagnosed with ASD, there remains a prevalent lack of understanding and numerous misconceptions surrounding this condition.
With this film, my purpose is to raise awareness about ASD. Through my personal experience, I have come to realize that autism is not an illness that should be secluded for treatment. Instead, it is a human condition that demands a deep well of human and social understanding. It is not solely the person with ASD who requires this understanding; it extends to each family member, as their psychological well-being becomes intertwined in this journey. ASD is not merely an individual's struggle; it is a social incapacity that necessitates collective efforts and governmental support.
This film shall serve as a legacy I wish to leave for my child, Oyen, and for all the individuals with special needs. My hope is to witness a future where society possess a heightened understanding of people with special needs, accepting them unconditionally for who they are. I dream of a world that nurtures inclusivity, compassion, and appreciation for the unique qualities individuals with ASD bring to our collective tapestry.
