On this day, October 5, before the night ends, we would like to acknowledge the role models and second parents that play a pivotal role in society, our teachers. We are very grateful for your support and encouragement that helped us in our academic growth.

We would like to thank them for their outstanding performances, not only in teaching but also in guiding us in whatever we do and for always reminding us to be the best version of ourselves. Teachers have been magnified in recent times as they adapted to the challenges of hybrid learning during the pandemic. Many teachers went above and beyond, finding innovative ways to engage their students through virtual and hybrid models of technology, ensuring that education continued despite the obstacles.

Their patience, humor, and dedication make every session a fun learning experience for students. Teachers not only share their knowledge but also teach us beautiful things that we should always apply in our daily lives. In the grand mosaic of life, they are the brush strokes that add color, the melodies that bring harmony, and the constellations that light our way. They are the master of knowledge, the painter, architects of our dreams, and most of all, the stairs of our future to achieve our goals in life. The passion of their teaching has ignited a flame of curiosity in every one of us, they don't only imparted knowledge but also instilled values and life lessons that we will carry forever.

On behalf of all your students, past and present, thank you for being dedicated and inspirational teachers. Your influence goes far beyond the classroom, for your unwavering support, your belief in us and your belief in the power of education. We are grateful for your efforts for being the philosopher, who always inspire us, and being the lead for the brighter future!

Thank you CSHSB teachers! And Happy Teacher's Day to every educator out there!!

HAIRY SITUATION
by Roanne Paat, Editor-in-chief

There is a difference between right and proper. As one is forced, and the other is kind, one of it stays on paper, and the other is on other's might. The thing is you cannot always be proper as you are being right.

Computer Science High School of Bicolandia’s first school handbook was presented on March 17, 2023 at the CBSUA Camilo Guevara Social Hall. The event aimed to give the students enough knowledge with regards to the school’s history, honor, and policies that maintain discipline within and outside of the school premises. These were explained for these to be clear with everyone inside the room.

A question caught the attention of the majority when it questioned one of the minor policy violations a student can commit; this being "Sporting long hair for boys". That question opened another topic known as "gender expression".

The DepEd Order No. 32 s. of 2017 or the Gender-Responsive Basic Education Policy promotes and protect the rights of students who are part of the LGBTQIA+ community. This allows them to express their identity within the school walls and have guaranteed access to equal rights. This attracted everyone’s attention because this topic is one of the most anticipated to be open or to be heard.

For generations, schools have been accustomed to maintaining short haircut for male students while they define it as proper. This has only been considered as normal since this is what they grew up with. It is mandatory that they cut their hair short, otherwise, they would be punished, discriminated against, or laughed about.

The order surely also meant that q***r male students are allowed to keep their long hair to express their likings and themselves. On the contrary, it must not only apply to students who are members of the said community. Never should anyone deserve to be forced just because of someone’s desire or belief. If people looked at this deeper, everyone finds comfort in their own style, they may treat it as their source of confidence, or it could be that it makes them accept their identity.

In what ways could someone’s haircut affect studying, anyway? One can be indecent even with their shortest hair, as one can actively participate even in their longest and vice versa. Female students have long hair as well, and it does not hold them back. It is not always in the odds’ hands and that is why we preach for equality.

β€œBut there is so much work to do about it.” this, and β€œWhy can’t they just do this” that when it was clearly stated that the topic was sensitive. Arrogance does not make things proper; it is at least the last thing to do so. β€œHindi naman po sa gusto ko magmukhang kontrabida pero, tungkol doon sa sinasabing gender expression, we can’t accept that here kasi kung pagbabasehan iyong memorandum, college lang and hindi kasali ang junior high school doon,” Ma’am Aira De Dios stated her thoughts regarding the discussion. They assured the students that they did not mean to discriminate and that they were only following the rules.

Grade 7- Android's adviser, Ma’am Charlot Panganiban stood up to tell her take on the issue. β€œNag meeting na po ang parents tungkol doon sa uniform and haircut,” she shared how the students from the lower grades follow what they were asked to do with no problem. β€œPero kung ano man po ang mapag kasunduan, susunod naman po tayo.” she added. They have decided to discuss the issue before finalizing.

Recently, it was then confirmed, coming from the office of the school head. It is now mandatory for male students to cut their hair short or how they put it-- proper. But even so, q***r students who insist to keep their hair is firstly required to bring their guardians to have it talked about. However, it must be obvious that not everyone is privileged to have understanding and supportive parents. In fear of being discriminated against in their own home, most have never been able to come out yet. Until then, they remained quiet or careful about it.

Homophobia and other forms of discrimination are most likely to begin in schools. That is why the DepEd mission includes protection of everyone’s rights and handle gender-sensitive, and safe establishments for learners. This is in fact the reason the community protests.

It is only natural to argue in a world with different minds and beliefs. But this, however, does not guarantee that your statements will always be valid. You could say something so cruel, as you can say something the world would approve of.

Long story short, no one deserves to give up their comfort due to someone else’s liking or beliefs and neither should they be punished for just being who they are. Be whatever you like if you do not step on justice with your own. Be someone who cares about what matters and be someone who matters. Be proper as you are being right.

CSHSB Highlights Mental Health Awareness

To address mental health concerns among the learners, Mrs. Lilibeth B. Roman, school head of Computer Science High School of Bicolandia, spearheads a symposium on mental health awareness dubbed "Padayon, Comsayanos: Combating Anxiety and Depression Through Mental Health Awareness" on March 17, 2023 at the CBSUA Camilo Guevara Social Hall.

The two-part event started with a zumba in the school grounds. Mrs. Aira De Dios, CSHSB's Guidance Advocate, later explained on her opening remarks how dancing produces happy hormones that help fight mental challenges.

Ms. NiΓ±a Salve King-BaΓ±as, a professional mental health advocate from the Department of Education Division of Camarines Sur, served as the key resource person and discussed points on how to deal with learners' anxiety and depression.

One of the opening statements Ms. NiΓ±a threw goes: it is important to know yourselves. Now, how are you really?

The session allowed students to share their experienced stress and sadness that eventually lead to emotional drain not only in the school, but also in the home setup. Comsayanos' responses showed how common anxiety and depression are these days, particularly in this generation.

Along the discussion, the resource speaker emphasized that mental disorders can be treated. Ms. NiΓ±a shared how seeking professional help should be the go-to solution and not self-diagnosis.

The morning session ended with a forum where both the learners and the teachers and non-teaching staff asked questions about the topic.

CSHSB Presents Student Handbook

Mrs. Melcha J. De los Santos, CSHSB's PMG Chairperson and a Grade 10 adviser, presented CSHSB's newly drafted student handbook.

She started her presentation with a trivial recap about the school's history. Then, she proceeded with the presentation of the different contents of the handbook.

The presentation deemed consultative as the presenter asked learners' feedback for every detail, from the handbook cover to the content of the consequences and rules stipulated.

Mrs. Beth Roman, the school head, decided to put the haircut policy into a halt as both the learners and the school administration and faculty considered its sensitivity with reference to DepEd Secretary Sarah Duterte's memorandum about haircut policy and how it plays in gender equality among the learners.

The presentation ended with Comsayanos and Comsayanas standing up as proof that they all agreed with the contents of the handbook.

"Finally, the student handbook is now materialized after fifteen years," Ma'am Melcha said.

Mr. Ricky Magistrado, CSHSB's teacher-in-charge for the month of March, reiterated in his closing remarks that the handbook does not exist to punish, but to serve as guide to better learners' behavior.

The date for the haircut policy discussion is not yet determined but will be addressed soon.

Comsayanos and Comsayanas from Grades 7 to 10 showcased their skills and creativity through various events, namely Tigsik writing, coffee painting, charcoal drawing, and still-life painting.

The second part of the activity showed Grade 7 learners in their FilipiΓ±ana attire for their Tinikling competition. Grade 8 students under Ms. Adriatico's MAPEH class competed for the best performance of "Tamang Paghugas ng Kamay". Mrs. Catolico's classes in Grade 9 performed three different local festivities while Grade 10 students sought for the best hiphop group between the two sections.

"Kung dae lang nag-pandemic," says one of the parents who attended.

"Mas de-develop pa sana ang mga talent kang mga aki."

Teachers and learners share the same sentiment.

With DepEd's constant reminder to focus on academics instead of extra-curriculars, events like this excite not only the learners, but also teachers, parents, and guardians.

"We should have more of this. This is what CSHSB is," says Ma'am Aira as she sat in front watching the learners perform.

The one-day activity is also a reference to the National Arts Month in February.

"Manalo man o matalo, lahat kayo panalo para sa aming mga teachers. Lahat kayo ay mahuhusay at talentado, kaya i-enjoy lang natin ang event na 'to Comsayanos!" Ms. Jean Annarie Adriatico, the MAPEH Club adviser.

Reg'l Director Sadsad: End 'Pasahan ng Problema' System

March 3, 2023--DepEd Regional Director Gilbert Sadsad addresses three major concerns, namely teachers' learning recovery program, professional development, and teachers' overall welfare, during the Philippine Public School Teachers Association Orientation at Pili National High School Pavilion, Pili, Camarines Sur.

Pili Acting Mayor Francis Belen also attended the event.

RD Sadsad opened his speech by thanking secondary teachers on doing their best to cope with struggling learners despite the lack of program interventions specifically focused on struggling high school learners. He also emphasized the need to develop reading as a basic gateway to learning various disciplines.

"No matter what you do if a non-reader will not be given special consideration or concern, they will never understand higher subject areas," he added.

The Eight-Week Learning Recovery Program intended for elementary proved a success as RD Sadsad reported a decrease in struggling readers from 68% of 440,000 to 34% of the total number.

RD Sadsad encouraged high school teachers who adapted the program to join the movement to fight struggling learning among Bicolano learners. His anecdotes led to a call to stop the "pasahan system", a system of mass promotion despite learners' ability to read.

He ended the first part of his speech by saying: Tapusin na natin ang pag-produce ng non-readers.

Most Pili East and West secondary school leaders and teachers, and non-teaching staff proceeded to registering for the PPSTA membership as the second part focused on sharing the long-term benefits of being a member.

CSHSB Awards 2nd Quarter Academic Achievers

CSHSB conducts its 2nd Quarter Recognition Rites and Homeroom PTA meeting on February 25, 2023.

The Recognition Rites included the quarterly Project SALUDO, a CSHSB administration-initiated rewards system that recognizes those rooms and individuals that met the "standards of excellence".

After the customary turn over of the certificates, class advisers from Grades 7 to 10 facilitated the distribution of cards and certificates in their respective classes.

Mrs. Aira P. De Dios, Grade 7-Symbian adviser, conducted the classroom-based PROJECT SPIN: Strengthening Parents' Involvement. According to her, meetings are golden opportunities to remind parents and guardians how their presence and constant monitoring of their learners play an important part in child rearing.

More than 200 parents and guardians attended the event.

"There was a noticeable rise of Academic Achievers and challengers this quarter," said Ma'am Bernadette Layosa, 7-Oracle adviser.

"Perhaps the First Quarter was just a warm up and adjustment phase for most learners," she added.
