Adventist Medical Center Manila held a ribbon-cutting ceremony and dedication program to celebrate the launching of the new Nutrition Support Unit (NSU) located beside the Dietary Food Service Department on May 17, 2021. It was attended by the members of the Administrative Council, Department Heads, and workers of the hospital.

“Nutrition plays an important role in the patient management and should not be neglected especially in critical cases”, mentioned by Dr. Linda Lim-Varona, director of the Lifestyle Medicine and Medical Education departments of AdventistMed, in her keynote message during the opening program of NSU.

The establishment of a Nutrition Support Unit is an important indicator of quality care in the hospital. Patients’ simple nutritional status is still not considered a sufficient medical priority Despite numerous advancements in medical/clinical care and continuous constant efforts on nutrition education development, the simple correction of a patient’s nutritional status still appears to be overlooked or not considered as a sufficient medical priority. Identification of Nutritionally-At-Risk (NARs) patients is an essential solution to Malnutrition. Malnutrition is prevalent around the world, it is a burden both to patients and health care facilities and we cannot treat malnourished patients without identifying Nutritionally-at-risk (NARs) patients. Unidentified malnutrition not only heightens the risk of adverse complications for patients, increased muscle loss, impaired wound healing, a longer length of hospital stay, and increased morbidity and mortality. Nutrition screening upon hospital admission has just recently been mandatory, thanks to Administrative Order No. 2019-0033 “Guidelines for the Implementation of Nutrition Care Process in Hospitals.” This mandate provides all public hospitals and also private hospitals to operationalize and institutionalize the Nutrition Care Process. Aside from that, Department Memorandum No.2020-0138 “Interim Guidelines for Registered Nutritionist-Dietitians in Hospitals on the Nutritional and Dietary Management of Suspected, Probable and Confirmed Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Patients and on the Provision of Healthy Diet in Hospital Workforce” is another new mandate that can help better address nutritional needs and provide standard nutrition intervention for COVID-19 patients and to ensure the nutritional needs of the healthcare workers.

“There are overwhelming demands of nutritional care and it is only time that this new unit has been established. It is with great pride and honor to join the more than 10 tertiary hospitals in following the gold standard implementers of the nutrition program in the Philippines”, said Dr. Frances Gail M. Turalba, Internal Medicine-Clinical Nutrition Specialist, clinical head of NSU. With Sharlou Joreme L. Fajardo, NSU clinical dietitian, AdventistMed NSU will work hand in hand to improve patient care through the correct and appropriate implementation of nutritional management to in-patient, out-patient, or intermediate-care patients by using a multidisciplinary approach to nutrition management, that includes the correct and appropriate use of enteral and parenteral nutrition.

“Your DNA is not your destiny,” says an article in the January 2010 issue of Time magazine. In short, we do not have to get the diseases that our parents suffered from.

Let us delve briefly into epigenetics (Read on, it’s not as complex as it sounds!) Each of our chromosomes contains 50% DNA and 50% protein molecules, the latter containing switches that can turn the genes in the DNA on and off. Identical twins have the same genes, that’s why they are remarkably similar. A study of 80 sets of identical twins found around 1200 gene expression differences in the 3-year old twins and as much as 5500 differences in the 50-year old twins. The correlation of gene expression was found in the epigenome or gene switches. The older the twins grew, the more different they became - mainly because of life choices. (Fraga et al 2007.)

Another study showed that the most powerful way to change the switch setting is by what we eat – which brings us to the new science of nutrigenomics. (Gallou-Kabani et al 2007.)

Many scientific studies have shown that a low-fat, high-fiber plant-based diet can effectively prevent, arrest and even reverse lifestyle-related diseases like diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and cancer. Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn Jr. did a 20-year follow-up on 18 patients who had severe coronary artery blockage, with a total of 49 coronary events already, like heart attack and bypass surgery. He put them on a plant-based, low-fat diet. Only one of the 18 patients suffered chest pain during the study period and that was when he strayed for a while from the diet. The rest were all symptom-free. Eleven patients agreed to have a repeat angiogram which showed a remarkable lessening of coronary artery blockage.

The China Study by Dr. T. Colin Campbell is a must-read because it shows the major role of diet in the development not only of heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and common cancers (breast, prostate, colorectal) but also of auto-immune diseases like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis.
