After screening at the Cinemalaya Next Gen Section, Nabunturan Independent Film Exhibition, Pelikultura: The Calabarzon Film Festival, Tan-ok ni Ilocano, and Bakunawa Fest, our film "𝐊𝐀𝐑𝐊𝐀𝐑𝐌𝐀" written and directed by 𝐌𝐞𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐑𝐢𝐭𝐳 𝐆𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐳 has been selected to be part of the lineup at the 16th Cinema Rehiyon in Iloilo, happening from March 19-21, 2024! We are immensely grateful for the opportunity to showcase our work alongside other talented filmmakers in the Country. Each screening has been a meaningful step in our journey, and we are excited to bring our film to new audiences at Cinema Rehiyon. A decade ago, Ylocostar went on a journey to share the rich Ilokano heritage and stories. Today, as we celebrate our 10th anniversary, we are filled with gratitude for the incredible support that has carried us through this remarkable decade.

Back in 2013, our dream was simple yet profound: to help preserve the crafts, traditions, beliefs, and narratives of our community, as told by its incredible individuals. Some of those voices have since left us, but their stories live on through our work. To our fellow filmmakers, film festival juries, film enthusiasts, actors, cultural advocates, and media people whom we happen to connect with, thank you for your kind words. These will fuel us to continue pursuing our craft. We've transcended borders, sharing Ilokano narratives in different languages and cultures, and we hope we've made you proud. What has marked our success at Ylocostar Films, aside from creating films, is our ability to share knowledge through film talks with students, aspiring filmmakers, and storytellers both within and beyond our region. This commitment to education and storytelling has been an essential part of our journey.

While we may not know what lies ahead in the coming years, one thing is for certain: your support remains the cornerstone of our success. Thank you for being with us every step of the way. Together, we will continue to preserve and share the stories that matter.

Mr. Melver Ritz Gomez, a regional filmmaker and instructor of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS)–Department of Languages and Literature (DLL), received awards for his short films in separate awarding ceremonies of an award-giving body and film festival held simultaneously on September 23.

"Naisangsangayan a Daga" (Extraordinary Soil), a short documentary film helmed by Gomez, notched the best documentary film or the "Pinakapasadong Dokumentaryong Pampelikula" during the 25th Gawad PASADO (Pampelikulang Samahan ng mga Dalubguro), an award-giving body hosted by and held at the National Teachers College (NTC). His documentary film tells the story of two elderly pottery makers, Nana Crisanta and Nana Benjamina, from San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte.

Winning as the best film among other finalists, his short narrative Ilokano film 'Karkarma' also received the Gimadyawan Award, the highest recognition given to filmmakers in the competition, during the 10th Nabunturan Independent Film Exhibition (NABIFILMEX) at the Municipality of Nabunturan, Davao De Oro. The film revolves around Tisang, a lady with golden earrings, who wanders around her town, finding a 'mangngagas' (local healer) for her ‘karkarma’—the second soul of the Ilokanos.

Gomez said that receiving these awards is not merely recognition but a beacon of hope for regional filmmakers like himself.

"It's a heartening reminder that there are individuals who genuinely appreciate the effort they put into their craft, as this recognition isn't just about a trophy but a source of motivation to continue to champion Ilokano narratives across various communities through the medium of film," he told The Edge.

When asked about his advice to young regional filmmakers, Gomez said they should explore the narratives of their community and tell those through moving pictures.

"Filmmaking isn't a walk in the park, but if you genuinely possess the heart and passion for it, the journey becomes incredibly visual art," he added.

Both his films also won recognition at the Tan-ok ni Ilocano Film Festival, where "Naisangsangayan a Daga" won as runner-up in 2022, while the latter notched the best narrative film and other special awards in the succeeding edition.
