DID YOU KNOW THAT MANGROVES, a group of trees and shrubs that live in coastal areas, are among our "planet’s best carbon scrubbers"?
According to a NASA-led study “mangrove forests move carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into long-term storage in greater quantities than other forests”.
MANGROVE swamps protect coastal areas from erosion, storm surge and tsunamis and also provide a habitat for a great variety of marine species to thrive.
In Panabo, Davao del Norte, the Panabo Mangrove Park Ecotourism Project located at Brgy. JP Laurel was inaugurated last June 2019.
The project, now on its sixth phase, is composed of a 430-meter boardwalk over the mangrove sanctuary and a docking cottage and can now accommodate potential economic and ecotourism activities like mangrove tours and boat / kayak rentals that will benefit the locals. A Provincial Government-funded multi-purpose building in the mangrove park is currently under construction.
Panabo Mangrove Park Ecotourism Project sits in a 73-hectare salvage zone mangrove sanctuary. The project aims to showcase the mangrove forest and promote ecotourism activities in the area, intensify the mangrove protection and preservation program of the LGU, establish Environmental Educational Research Facility, increase the level of environmental awareness and participation of the community, and generate livelihood and employment opportunities.
