A Growing Concern: HOW POOR IS ZAMBOANGA DEL SUR?
In 2018, under the Cerilles administration, the poverty incidence in Zamboanga del Sur was 25.2%. However, during the term of Governor Victor Yu from 2019 to 2023, it has significantly risen to 40.1%, an alarming 14.9% increase. Out of the province’s total population of 1,050,668, a staggering 421,318 people are now classified as poor, leaving many unable to feed themselves and their families three times a day. This highlights the lack of a concrete poverty alleviation plan under the Yu administration, leaving many families struggling below the poverty line.
Meanwhile, Pagadian City’s poverty incidence stands at only 13.4%, far below the provincial average of the Yu administration. Pagadian City stands as a beacon of hope, achieving the lowest poverty incidence in Zamboanga del Sur and ranking Top 6 Lowest Poverty Incidence in Mindanao for Component Cities in 2021 (based on the latest PSA data). This shows that Pagadian City has had no significant contribution to the rising poverty levels in the province and remains committed to uplifting the lives of its people.
This stark comparison is a wake-up call. Addressing poverty requires decisive action, visionary leadership, and accountability, these are the qualities that the people of Zamboanga del Sur desperately need now more than ever.
