Deirdre dela Cruz, Associate Professor of History at the University of Michigan has discovered what are probably the earliest documented spirit photographs from the Philippines in the “Album de Fotografias Espiritas.” (Casa Editorial Carbonell y Esteva. Barcelona, 1903). She has published a fascinating journal article putting the photos in context.
This photo taken in the studio of Joaquin Reyes in Santa Cruz Manila at the close of the 19th century shows a widower, Mr, N. Javier, and the spirit of his dearly beloved wife.
According to the photo caption, Javier, sought relief from his grief through the ex-Agustinian friar Salvador Pons. Having exhausted all remedies offered by the Catholic church and failing to console Mr Javier, Pons recommended that he try the medium Jose Azas. During a séance, a cloud appeared in the form of a woman in baro’t saya. Unfortunately, the photograph was taken before the spirit could fully appear. Nevertheless, Mr. Javier recognized the headless spirit as that of his wife. This and three other photos were sourced from the album of Salvador Pons in Manila.

On Wednesday, I told you guys about this neighbor of mine who lost his wife and how the spirit of his wife entered into the wildest dog in their compound to seek justice, and I refused to mention this to the man after I found out because I was scared that he would become afraid and it may interfere with the plans the spirit of his wife was planning.

But secretly I knew I had to keep an eye on the dog to know if the late wife would need any help from me.

I visited my neighbor's house every day to see him. And when we had finished talking, I would step out of the house and stroll to the gate to see the dog.

This particular dog remained silent and kept looking at me. Since her spirit was in the dog, it was not possible for me to communicate with her or see her to know the cause of her dèâth. Even when the dog barks, it barks like a real dog and I do not hear dog language.

All I hoped was that one day, the spirit of the late wife would get to me.

One night while we were sleeping, I heard gunshots in the neighborhood. It was around 2am. Robbers were in the area. The whole dogs in the neighborhood kept barking. I felt restless within me. I could not step out because of how dangerous it was. So I stayed awake until it was 5 a.m when normalcy had returned.

Very early that morning, I went out to find other neighbors gathered at my neighbor's house. Two dèâd bodies were found in the compound with their face badly wounded and their bodies injured. He was standing with his daughter by his side. Both appeared shocked.

When I asked what happened, my neighbor said to me.

"Victor, it was only this dog that fought. It was the German shepherd that k!lled them. If this dog was not here, they would have probably gunned me down."

I kept looking at the dog. It was very furious. It kept barking. I knew something was off. I looked around the compound and from a distance I saw the spirit of the wife standing.

Very innocent.

At that moment I knew she had accomplished her mission and had left the body of the dog. The moment my eyes went to her she disappeared.

It was a rare sight for me.

At that moment I realized something.

That a spirit that loves his or her family sincerely knows when danger is ahead and will do anything to avert such just to keep his or her family alive. That you are alive now, could be the protection of a deâd relation who stands for you and combats deâth in the spirit.
