PAMALANDONG 2024
By: Rev. Msgr. Gilbert Urbina
HOLY WEEK in Palo, known as PAMALANDONG, and the explanation of TAIS-DUPOL of PALO
The TAIS-DUPOL of Palo. Only seen during Holy Week, especially on Good Friday, these strange-looking “penitentes” are descendants of the former flagellants which abound during Holy Week in the 1600s (as attested to by the Jesuit chronicler-historian Pedro Chirino). It was in the late 1800s that the Franciscan Fray Pantaleon de la Fuente organized these flagellants and gave them the medieval penitential habit in Spain. Their long robes and covered faces evoke anonymity and humility in line with the injunction of the Lord for those doing fasting or penance (cf Mt 6:16-18). The penance or mortification is made more intense in Palo due to the hot weather and the fact that the “tais-dupol” go barefoot.
In Palo, they (penitentes) take part in the major liturgies, they go in procession on Holy Wednesday and Good Friday, go around the town collect monetary contribution in line with the Good Friday collection for the Holy Land, assist in maintaining order during the Senakulo and take charge of the processional pasos (the images) during the procession.
Unfortunately many who are not from Palo associate their garb with the KluKluxKlan (KKK) which was active in southern USA in the late 1800s and early 1900s (people from Palo and environs are not even aware of this kind of KKK). Associating the Tais-Dupol with the KKK betrays an ignorance of the foundations and origins of the KKK as an anti-Catholic and anti-black association. In fact, the KKK’s use of the medieval penitential garb of Spain was a downright mockery of the Catholic faith and practices. So, to associate the KKK with the Tais-Dupol reveals ignorance not just of history but also of cultural anthropology.
Now that this Holy Week practice in Palo is widely known due to social media, it has been subjected to much scrutiny, even bashing and criticism. The challenge fo

PAMALANDONG 2024
On Good Friday, we remember the day Jesus willingly suffered and died by crucifixion as the ultimate sacrifice for our sins (1 John 1:10).

“TANGGAL” has been TANGGAL long before the advent of the “Pamlandong” (reenactment or “Senakulo”). TANGGAL has been used to mean the dramatic “play” or Crucifixion scene with a moving Christ (mechanically manipulated mannequin or image of the Crucified Christ) which lasted from 1 to 3pm and which has been the background for the meditations on the Seven Last Word - Siete Palabras. The “Pamalandong”, a generic word used to refer to the passion play or drama as a prequel to the TANGGAL of old was introduced in the 70s to give context and enable those who would come for the TANGGAL to medicate and reflect (hence, “pamalandong”) more deeply into the mystery of the Passion and Death of Christ. Actually the word “Pamalandong” was given a meaning synonymous with “Senakulo” the genre in Philippine drama or play about the passion of Jesus.
In fact, in Palo, many from the younger generation even use the English word “reenactment” (again, another generic term) to describe the Passion play before the Siete Palabras.
