Bamboo, often mistaken for a tree due to its towering height and wood-like appearance, is actually a member of the grass family! Yes, thatโ€™s right โ€“ bamboo is classified as grass, specifically in the subfamily ๐˜‰๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ฃ๐˜ถ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ช๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ฆ.

Unlike trees, bamboo stems (culms) are hollow, lack a vascular cambium, and donโ€™t grow in diameter or height as they age. Each bamboo culm reaches its full size in one season. Bamboo also lacks bark; instead, it has protective culm sheaths during early growth. With over 1,400 species, bamboo grows in diverse environments, from Asia to South America. From resilient building materials to sustainable alternatives, bambooโ€™s versatility highlights why it's treasured worldwide, with remarkable utility.

On this day in 1683, Dutch scientist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek announced his discovery of bacteria from his own teeth plaque samples. Though his findings were initially met with skepticism, they later became the cornerstone of microbiology.

Antonie van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) was a Dutch businessman with a passion for science. Using his skill in crafting lenses, he created powerful microscopes that could magnify over 200 times, leading him to discover bacteria on September 17, 1683. He called these tiny organisms "animalcules." Today, we know that bacteria are tiny, single-celled organisms found everywhere on Earth. They reproduce quickly, lack a nucleus, and come in shapes like rods or spirals.

Despite skepticism from the scientific community, Leeuwenhoek's findings were eventually proven true when his original specimens were photographed in 1981. His work with microscopes produced clearer images than any of his peers for centuries, and he shared many of his discoveries in letters to the Royal Society. Leeuwenhoek was particularly fascinated by microbiology, a field still shaped by his discoveries today.

Bacteria, while often associated with disease, play a vital role in our livesโ€”from helping make foods like yogurt and cheese to preserving food through fermentation. Leeuwenhoekโ€™s contributions remain significant in modern science.

It's time to update our textbooks! Researchers confirmed the discovery of nitroplast, an organelle inside a species of marine algae that fixes nitrogen into a useful form.

In our basic biology classes, we were taught that the nitrogen in the atmosphere can only be processed by bacteria and archaea into a usable form for life. This is best illustrated by the symbiotic bacteria in the root nodules of legumes that "fix" nitrogen and turn it into a form usable for the plant. That's true - until now.

After years of research, an international team of scientists confirmed the existence of an organelle inside a eukaryotic cell that can turn nitrogen into a usable form. The organelle, known as nitroplast, evolved from a once-independent nitrogen-fixing bacteria now living permanently inside an algae - eventually becoming a part of it. The discovery of the existence of nitroplast in the marine algae species ๐˜‰๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ถ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ฑ๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ข ๐˜ฃ๐˜ช๐˜จ๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ๐˜ช๐˜ช finally adds eukaryotes to living forms that can fix nitrogen.

The nitroplast organelle is the fourth known example of primary endosymbiosis, a process in which a eukaryotic cell eventually engulfs its symbiotic prokaryotic cell and eventually turns it into an organelle. Throughout Earth's history, such breakthroughs in evolution led to more complex ways of life, such as when previously independent microorganisms became permanent residents of their hosts and became what we know now as mitochondria and chloroplasts.
