Drop Everything and Read!

In line with the implementation of the National Reading Program as an integral component of the National Learning Recovery Program (NLRP), Porfirio G. Comia Memorial National High School, implements Catch-up Fridays.

Starting January 12, 2024, through the Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) Day, the initiative aims to provide Comehiers with the opportunity to engage in reading activities both in English and Filipino primed with spelling drills to unlock vocabulary difficulties.

Catch-up Fridays is designed to strengthen the foundational, social, and other relevant skills necessary to actualize the intent of the basic education curriculum by focusing on the development of learner's reading, critical thinking, analytical, and writing skills.

December 7 marked a momentous occasion as the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of the Philippines of Porfirio G. Comia Memorial National High School gathered for the Investiture Ceremony, during which they formally accepted a fresh group of scouts.

With the counsel of devoted scout leaders and under the esteemed direction of the Institutional Scouting Head, Mrs. Anabelle Genteroy, the investees wholeheartedly embraced the Boy Scouts' enduring tenets of dependability and allegiance.

Significantly highlighted was the solemn oath-taking procedure, which contributed to the ceremony's elevated status. The young male and female individuals, resplendent in their Scout uniforms, ceremoniously and with pride proclaimed their initiation into the prestigious Boy Scout and Girl Scout orders. This formal initiation ceremony symbolizes their dedication to the fundamental principles and values that underpin the scouting movement.

Changing the World, One Sapling at a Time

In the picturesque landscapes of Oriental Mindoro, the grounds of Porfirio G. Comia Memorial National High School (COMEHI) witnessed the commencement of a transformative journey marked by the planting of 236,000 trees.

Dr. Eddy A. Dalisay, supported by the dedicated assistance of Ma'am Josie R. Panagsagan and Ma'am Annabelle A. Genteroy, set the first sapling into the soil, symbolizing the beginning of a greener era. Adriel David Lorilla, SSLG President, took part in planting the second sapling, highlighting the significance of student engagement in creating a sustainable environment. Ma'am Nancy Castillo, with notable involvement, jointly planted the third sapling, a symbol of unity, along with the Faculty and Employee Association.

Empowering Change: School, Community Unite for a Greener Future

In accordance with DepEd Memorandum No. 69, s. 2023, which outlined the guidelines for the implementation of the nationwide project entitled โ€œDepEd's 236,000 Trees: A Christmas Gift for the Children," Porfirio G. Comia Memorial National High School led the whole schools of Oriental Mindoro in a Division Kick-off instilling a sense of environmental responsibility through a tree-planting initiative, December 6.

James T. Zamora, Public Schools District Supervisor of Naujan West, delivered the opening message and emphasized the purpose of planting trees. He mentioned that this is the day to commemorate an important milestone that will surely benefit generations to come.

"Thirty-five years ago, we also planted trees, and today we will do it again,โ€ Zamora stated.

Provincial Government Environment and Natural Resources Representative, Engr. Joseph Solis and Dr. Eddy A. Dalisay, Education Program Supervisor and School Governance Operations Division Chief, graced the said event together with community partners โ€” Wenceslao Magnaye, barangay chairman, and Nancy A. Castillo, SPTA president.

The program was attuned by community singing of "Paraiso by Smokey Mountain," and Ma'am Josie R. Panagsagan, Principal IV, delivered welcoming remarks following the event.

In a captivating display of talent and emotion, participants from all grade levels in this year's Speech Choir Competition wove a powerful narrative around the piece โ€” โ€œThe Resiliency of a Filipinoโ€ by William G. Bacani. Drawing inspiration from the unwavering spirit of the Filipino people, the performances showcased a harmonious blend of spoken word and choreography, leaving the audience moved, thrilled, and inspired.

Stage echoed with literary brilliance as Grade 9 emerged triumphant in the Interpretatibong Pagbasa contest, captivating audiences with their exceptional interpretations of "Bayani" by Amado V. Hernandez.

The winning team, composed of Earl John F. Mandac (Mahusay sa Talumpati), Aizel Marie Joy F. Garcia (Mahusay sa Tula), Jay El M. Lucena, and Exandria Lyn V. Colocar, not only showcased their prowess in interpretative reading but also demonstrated a deep connection with the literary work.

In their readings, the Grade 9 team masterfully conveyed the essence and emotional nuances of "Bayani," transporting the audience into the rich tapestry of Amado V. Hernandez's words. Each participant brought a unique perspective, contributing to a harmonious and impactful performance that secured their well-deserved first-place victory.

In the second place is Grade 10 composed of Aaron Cedric G. Abacan, Reika Nemia C. Tabernero, Princess Chealsea G. Figueroa (Mahusay sa Monologo), and Jewel Emmanuelle V. Young storytellers shine in 'Masining na Pagkukuwento'

Students from grades 7 and 8 took the stage to share their imaginative tales in 'Masining na Pagkukuwento'. The competition showcased the creative talents of young storytellers, resulting in delightful narratives that captivated the audience.

Mia Clowie B. Deriquito, an eighth-grade student, claimed the coveted top spot with her exceptional storytelling. Her artful narration not only captivated the audience but also showcased a remarkable flair for imaginative storytelling. Lychin U. Uy, also from eighth grade, secured the second position with her ability to engage the audience. In the third spot was Genevy D. Dinglasan, a seventh-grade student. Despite being in a lower grade, Genevy's creative narrative added a unique touch to the competition, showcasing her expressive storytelling.

In a test of knowledge, potential, and the ability to think under pressure, Grades 10 - 12 students from Porfirio G. Comia Memorial National High School showcased their oratory skills in the Extemporaneous Speech Competition during the National Reading Month celebration, November 30.

Adriel David Lorilla, 12 - ABM Frederick Taylor, seized the spotlight with an articulate discussion on the environmental impact of plastic usage. His insightful commentary secured him 1st place in the competition. Cristian Bal M. Escalona from 11 -STEM Aphrodite claimed the 2nd spot while Joyce S. Salcedo from 10 - SSC Aristotle secured the 3rd spot with commendable speeches.

During the 2023 Pambansang Buwan at Araw ng Pagbasa, Anabelle A. Genteroy, OIC-Assistant Principal, introduced a practical solution to address the issue of reading and numeracy: dedicating 30 minutes each day to reading.

Meanwhile, anchoring to the theme โ€” "Pagbasa: pag-asa ng matatag na kinabukasan", Head Teacher III of the English Department, Nympha P. Reyes, emphasized the positive impact reading can contribute to oneโ€™s literacy level.

Also, Madel Y. Tolentino announced the contest schedule that altogether aimed at fostering reading habits among students. This initiative aims to cultivate a culture of readers within the Comehi community.

: To enliven Filipino moral character and pursuant to Proclamation No. 479, s. 1994, Porfirio G. Comia Memorial National High School, through the Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao Department, enjoined in the celebration of Filipino Values Month, November 28.

Julius Genar A. Quinio, EsP Coordinator underscored the importance of values to todayโ€™s youth particularly to the students of Comehi. Meanwhile, Franceska Isabel A. Arevalo, EsP Club Coordinator, emphasized the unique and positive Filipino characteristics worthy of emulation.

โ€œCharacter is higher than intellect,โ€ Jay El M. Lucena, EsP Club President, enumerated and explained the twelve Filipino values that should be observed each month of the year.

EsP Department is set to conduct Values restoration program and workshops during EsP classes as well as film viewing to promote greater consciousness of oneโ€™s values.

: In an artistic display of movements and expressions, Comehi performers across six grade levels gave their renditions of contemporary dances resonating with the message of Gloc 9's "Walang Natira."

Securing the top position, the grade 8 dancers embodied the song's message, portraying the hardships and sacrifices of OFWs. In second place, the grade 10 team delivered a compelling dance routine that echoed the song's themes, emphasizing the societal challenge of a worker abroad; and earning the third-place, the grade 12 performer's nuanced interpretation showcased the complexities of the song's narrative.

The contemporary dance competition, a central event in the Career Guidance program, became a canvas for the students to articulate the profound narrative that one faced in the choice of a career.
