TD “ENTENG” CLASS SUSPENSION

PAGASA has upgraded the classification of the LPA to a storm or Tropical Depression “ENTENG.” According to their weather advisory, there is a high possibility of heavy rainfall of 100-200mm in Camarines Sur.

Due to potential safety concerns, especially for students and teachers, and in line with the recommendation of the CDRRMC, we are announcing the suspension of classes in all schools in Naga City for tomorrow, September 2, 2024 (Monday).

Due to the heavy rain, flooding in low-lying areas is possible. We advise school administrators, particularly those in flood-prone areas, to relocate school equipment to higher ground if possible.

Let us also stay vigilant and keep away from the dangers posed by Typhoon “Enteng.”

National Press Freedom Day: Upholding the Pillar of Democracy

Every year, on August 30th, the Philippines observes National Press Freedom Day. This day is not just a date on the calendar but a powerful reminder of the essential role that a free and independent press plays in safeguarding democracy. It commemorates the birth anniversary of Marcelo H. del Pilar, a key figure in Philippine journalism and a national hero who used his pen to ignite the flames of reform during the Spanish colonial era.

The Significance of Press Freedom

Press freedom is one of the cornerstones of a democratic society. It ensures that citizens are well-informed, enabling them to make sound decisions, hold those in power accountable, and engage in public discourse. A free press acts as a watchdog, exposing corruption, advocating for social justice, and giving voice to the voiceless. Without it, democracy weakens, and the potential for abuse of power increases.

Challenges Facing Press Freedom

While the Philippines is known for its vibrant press, it also faces significant challenges. Journalists often work under difficult conditions, facing threats, harassment, and even violence. The country has seen several attacks on media workers, underscoring the risks involved in reporting the truth. The rise of misinformation and the spread of fake news have also complicated the landscape, making it harder for the public to distinguish between fact and fiction.

The Role of Digital Media

In the digital age, the landscape of press freedom has expanded. Social media platforms have become powerful tools for disseminating information quickly and broadly. However, they also pose challenges, such as the spread of disinformation and the polarization of public opinion. This makes the role of professional journalism even more crucial, as journalists strive to provide accurate, well-researched, and balanced news amidst the noise.
Remembering Marcelo H. del Pilar

The celebration of National Press Freedom Day also serves as a tribute to Marcelo H. del Pilar, who is remembered for his relentless pursuit of truth and justice. As the editor of "La Solidaridad," he used his writing to advocate for reforms and challenge the oppressive colonial rule. His work laid the groundwork for future generations of Filipino journalists, who continue to fight for press freedom and democracy.

As we commemorate National Press Freedom Day, it is vital to reflect on the importance of protecting and upholding press freedom. In a world where truth is often under siege, the role of journalists as defenders of democracy is more critical than ever. By supporting a free press, we ensure that the public remains informed, empowered, and engaged, keeping the spirit of democracy alive in the Philippines.

This day is not just a celebration but also a call to action—for journalists, citizens, and the government to work together in preserving the freedom of the press, a freedom that is essential for the health of our democracy.

Naga City announces new water supply measures

NAGA CITY -Naga City announced that the Almeda 2 pumping station will start operations this Friday to help address water shortages in St. Claire, Pagdaicon Mabolo, Deca Sabella, Metroville Sabang, and Jolly Neighbor in Santa Cruz.

The Carolina 4 and Pacol 5 pumping stations, currently limited to 10-hour operation due to generator use, will be connected to the main power grid, extending their hours to 20 daily. This will increase water output for Del Rosario, Almeda Highway, and nearby areas.

A new Water Commission is being considered to address water issues, and volunteers are being sought for input. MNWD will provide clearer updates on water interruptions, and officials are hopeful that rainfall will improve the water table soon.
