Cebu Technological University joins the country in commemorating the 161st birth anniversary of G*t Andres Bonifacio.

Andres Bonifacio, widely regarded as the "Father of the Philippine Revolution," stands as a symbol of courage, patriotism, and unwavering resolve in the face of oppression. Born on November 30, 1863, Bonifacio rose from humble beginnings to become the leader of the Katipunan, a secret revolutionary society that sought independence from Spanish colonial rule. His heroism lies not only in his willingness to fight for freedom but also in his deep belief in the power of the Filipino people to determine their own destiny. Through his leadership, writings, and ultimate sacrifice, Bonifacio inspired a nation to unite to pursue liberty and justice. His legacy continues to serve as a beacon of hope and determination for generations of Filipinos.

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH AN ATI KID ON PERSONAL
GROOMING AND HYGIENE

β€œYOU DON’T HAVE TO BE LOVELY TO BE CLEAN INSIDE OUT: Teaching the ATI Tribe children to be neat and clean.”

For years, some ethnic groups in the country have remained distant from our conventional communities. They seem like foreigners whose lives are historical items we see from a distance.

In many community extension and outreach programs of different organizations or institutions, these ethnic groups have always been interesting target groups. One of the adopted communities of the CTU-Naga Extension Campus is the ATI Tribe of South Poblacion from the City of Naga, Cebu. This year’s Second Phase of the Literacy Program includes young tutees from the ATI community.

A Grade 4 pupil, Riza Olo, is a member of the ATI Tribe we interviewed on the importance of grooming and taking a shower daily. When asked, she cited that though water is sparse in their locality, she makes a good effort to take a shower before going to school as she might smell foul and distract or turn off her seatmate in class. The ATI Tribe lives near the seashore and though seawater may have been their leisure for soaking, nothing beats a refreshing feeling after a tap water shower.

Especially in their somewhat secluded area since it was donated by the local government to the ATI community, which is not that accommodated in other localities, water supply or access may have been quite challenging because they are dependent on the Local Government for facilities in the community. This tribe is known in the city or the provinces of Cebu as somewhat underprivileged and underdeveloped communities. It is even surprising to learn that this tribe is not a native ethnic group but some migrants from East Africa.

Yet it is also quite impressive that a good number of the youth from the tribe, as the first group of beneficiaries of our Literacy Program last school year, are high school and college students from some public schools or a few reputed private schools in the city and from a neighboring town. This year, though, the program is focused on very young kids like kindergarten pupils and Primary Graders who are more eager to respond to basic reading tasks.

Before attending the Saturday reading session, Riza and her fellow literacy program participants are advised to follow basic hygiene procedures including brushing their teeth and taking a shower. Since the local community lacks the resources to build their toilet, it is known that hygienic practices, such as proper waste disposal, are not widely observed. This could have been due to the lack of resources in making their own toilet which may have been a challenge if not for some LGU programs that are often practiced by barangay leaders to elevate the living conditions of less fortunate communities.

In contrast to other local ethnic groups in the nation, this group is admirable because, even though some of them prefer to rely on the donations of kind benefactors rather than work on the taught livelihood programs, an important number of them aspire to complete their education to improve their quality of life, apart from relying on neighborhood stores to meet their basic needs.

During our recent session, I was fascinated to see some charming little kids in the group who may have been believed to be uninteresting and smelly children. Compared to some regular kids, especially from well-off families in our communities, not everyone is attracted to these ethnic kids. Yet when taking their pictures for our documentation on the program, we spotted a few cute and beautiful ones, especially in the last few meetings as they are encouraged and even rewarded to do the regular shower as a part of their routine. I just realized that you don’t have to be lovely to be clean inside and out. After all, true beauty is not only from the outside but that which truly lies within. /Rumuela L. Wong

CTU Naga Dila-ab, 2024- Intrams

CTU-Naga heats up like the scorching sun!

November 4-8, 2024, marks the significant days for the simultaneous Intramurals of the CTU System, bearing diverse captions, such as Banaag, 2024, for the Main Campus and Dila-ab (burning), 2024, for the CTU-Naga Campus dubbed, "CTU: Celebrating Talents and Unity through Sports, Culture, and the Arts. "

The different College Departments represent the four divisions: Unit 1 (Blue), tagged as the Aqua Stallions - Bachelor in Elementary Education (BEEd); Unit 2 (Green Team), the Verdant Vipers- Bachelor in Secondary Education (BSEd) as the Flaming Falcon Math and BTLED; Unit 3- BIT (Maroon), the Golden Lions; and Unit 3 (Yellow Team)- BSIT.

The Holy Mass was held at St. Francis Parish in the City of Naga, Cebu to kick off the celebration. It was graced by Rev. Fr. Mike Fortich, who expressed his bliss over the good number of students and faculty at the mass that sportsmanship is about how one plays the game and not just about winning. A festive atmosphere is then brought to the town center by the well-attended teacher, staff, and student parade which ends in the plaza.

The rest of the morning centers on the Opening Program at the town square with the Words of Welcome by the Campus Director, Atty. Marvey A. Ocampo, followed by the Oath of the Coaches by the Tournament Manager and Student Affairs and Services Adviser, Prof. Abrahem Anqui; and finally, the Oath of Sportsmanship by the Hurdle Gold Medalist and Regional SCUAA Athlete, Ms. Menchie Encina.

Subsequently is the Banner-raising Competition by two Moderators from each Unit and the symbolic Lighting of the Torch by Ms. Feuve Keth Bastida, Arnist Gold Medalist and Regional SCUAA Athlete.

An event like this showcases the different facets of students,’ faculty', and staff’s personalities that make work light and sustain one’s physical and mental well-being. Many favorite sports events such as basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, athletics, Sepak Takraw, and Arnis; and even board games like Chess and Scrabble; as well as the famed Esports as Mobile Legends (ML) that draw more participants and spectators among the students.

Might as well, cultural events such as the Pop Solo, Vocal Duet Contemporary Dance, Radio Drama/ Theater, Hip Hop, Dance Sports, and the most awaited of all, the Mr. and Miss Intramurals 2024 conclude the last two days.

Just as a Jesuit Father Director once said, β€œWinners make things happen, but losers make it happen;” it is not only the Championship to be celebrated, but the honor of playing a fair and good game among all athletes is what matters most in real life./ Rumuela L. Wong.
