SMS aces municipal meet, remains defending champ with 37 golds

MINGLANILLA, Cebu— Daring to make another legacy last, the Sisters of Mary School- Boystown’s sports representatives stand shoulder-to-shoulder to defend the podium’s top spot during Minglanilla’s municipal meet on a three-day game shot on December 8- 10, 2023.

To begin another series of eventful clashes from varying categories, an opening ceremony was organized to commence the said series. At 6:00 am, a large crowd of excited athletes, numbering 44 schools in total, gathered at San Lucas Medical for the opening parade to the Minglanilla Sports Complex where the lighting of the festival torch and the athletes and technical officials’ oath-taking took place.

In addition to the immensity of being the overall champion, the Aloysian Spikers got six golds in its category, while silver on 5x5 Basketball and gold in 3x3. The Sepak Takraw players also got 3 golds in its endeavors and the Arnis team pursued 6 golds while Table Tennis players got two bronze medals and one gold medal on their venture. In Badminton singles A got bronze in their endeavors.

The Taekwondo players also got five golds, four silvers, and two bronzes.

Overall, the school gathered a total of 37 golds. The immensity of the school’s gold medals came from athletics, bagging home 13 gold medals together with 9 silver medals and 4 bronze medals. The arnisadors of the school also contributed remarkably, lending a bulk of 6 golds and 1 silver.

Athletes were overjoyed after the school was declared the municipal meets' overall champion.

“It feels amazing to have worked hard and achieved this goal. I'm very happy and proud of myself and of the school,” Kharis Lark Pantonial said in an interview after the pronouncement of winners of the municipal meet.

“There were some tough competitors. But I just tried to stay focused and not let anything distract me from my goal,” he added.

Those who pouched a gold medal will get to represent the municipality at the Cebu provincial meet which will take place sometime next year.

RCC presides Project Hand-over Ceremony

MINGLANILLA, Cebu— Members of the Rotary Club of Cebu on Saturday, December 9, 2023 together with the Sisters of Mary School- Boystown Inc. were on hand to witness the Project Hand-over Ceremony at the school’s TVET workshops.

The handover program will be of the benefit of the school’s TVET workshops in enhancing the learnings and skills that were given to the students. Under the Global Grant (GG) 2237933, the Rotary Club of Cebu provided the necessary equipment and training for additional Technical Vocational Courses- Plumbing NC II and Carpentry NC II.

District Rotary Foundation Committee Stephan Chian, the RCC President Walter Cang; former President Jacob Ong, RCC Treasurer; Service Director Derrick Chua; George Neil Paraoan, Director Christopher Gecha, Rotarian Melchor Alejandro, Rotarian Christopher Racaza take part in the said Project Hand-over Ceremony.

In addition to the RCC team who took part in the said ceremony, the school’s local superior Sr. Eva R. Aringo, SM also sat in the ceremony as well as the TVET teachers.

Included in the event was the signing ceremony and ribbon cutting as symbols of handing over the project.

The signing ceremony and the ribbon cutting was done by the RCC President Cang and School’s Local Superior Sr. Eva.

Mac Larenz Navarro, one of the students of the school, said all the students will benefit by the goodness of the members of the Rotary Club of Cebu.

“ It is such a great act and response for those in need, especially when it comes to education,” he added.

“The Sisters of Mary students have been greatly honed when it comes to education and skills, not just academically but also in technical” he stressed.

Festivity cheer abounds: Virginia Food Inc. celebrates early Christmas with the 29th Batch

MINGLANILLA, Cebu— In a heartwarming display of holiday, the 29th Batch of the Sisters of Mary Schools-Boystown, Inc. came together for a dazzling Christmas party that left everyone feeling merry and bright this Friday, December 7, 2023.

The event was made to make special the moments left for the 29th Batch as it will be their last Christmas party at the school.

“Basically, this special event that we initiated for the Grade 12 was just only for reminiscing. I know that it will be the last Christmas party here at the school,” said one of the representatives Virginia Team in a statement.

The festivity kicked off in the morning as the 29th Batch gathered with the twinkling presence of the Virginia Food Inc. Team with festive decorations of food and snacks on the table.

The air was filled with anticipation and excitement as students eagerly awaited the start of the festive celebration.

Additionally, the Christmas party featured a wide array of games and entertainment for everyone.

Also, students were delighted by the presence of the Virginia Booster Boy performance, who presented the Virginia theme song to the Grade 12 students, and spread holiday cheer.

Live performances coming from the pride of the 29th Batch added a touch of magic to the festivities. Singers, dancers, and FAS Band performers took to the stage, serenading the crowd with lively carols and enchanting melodies.

One of the highlights of the party was the raffle draw that excited students. The prizes in the raffles included Christmas Noche Buena packs

Sr. Nonaly N. Basa, SM, one of the Grade 12 mother-sisters shared her message of appreciation with the entire team, saying that Virginia company’s unwavering support and continued partnership have not only made a significant difference in the school’s operations but have also enriched the lives of those they serve.

“As we reflect on the blessings and abundance that this season of Christmas brings, we want to extend our heartfelt appreciation for your trust, collaboration, and the invaluable contributions you have made. Your belief in our mission and your willingness to go above and beyond has been instrumental in our success,” Sr. Basa said further in a statement.

Not only that, Justine Abigan, one of the Grade 12 students also expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the entire team.
According to Abigan, their decision to extend their time with us and the generous gifts they have bestowed upon the school have made a profound impact on their own lives.

“The gifts you have graciously shared have not only brought smiles to our faces but have also alleviated some of the challenges we face. Your generosity has made a significant difference in our lives, reminding us that there are kind-hearted individuals and organizations like the Virginia Foods Corporation who genuinely cares about our well-being,” said Abigan in his speech.

Throughout the event, the Christmas party served as a reminder of the power of community and the importance of coming together during the holiday season. It created an opportunity for neighbors to connect, fostering a sense of belonging and unity that will carry on long after the party has ended. The spirit of Yuletide reminds us of the importance of coming together, fostering unity, and spreading kindness

As the event drew to a close, students left with hearts full of joy and memories that will be cherished for years to come. The Christmas party had created a sense of magic and wonder, reminding everyone of the true meaning of the holiday season – love, togetherness, and spreading joy to all.

SMS-Boystown campus journalists emerge victorious in the Districtwide Schools Press Conference 2023

LIPATA, Minglanilla— SMS- Boystown campus journalists proved their worth as they played just within the top three spots in each category during the districtwide Schools Press Conference 2023 against various schools from Minglanilla I and II last Tuesday, November 21, at Lipata National High School.

The conference aimed to select the top 3 winners in each category to advance to the Area Schools Press Conference (ASPC) on November 26-28 at the Municipality of Sibonga.

The SMS- Boystown campus journalists displayed their prowess in 9 individual categories, and group categories– Radio Broadcasting, Collaborative Desktop Publishing, and Mobile Journalism, creating a competitive atmosphere among the participating schools during the event.

In Filipino journalism, under individual category, Matthew Aya-ay excelled in Sports Writing (1st Place), Miguel Dizon in Feature Writing (1st), Cj Bandoquillo in Copyreading and Headline Writing and News writing (1st), Mark Angelo Arraz in Editorial Cartooning ( 2nd), Hero Rhee Chiong in Photojournalism (2nd), Vincent Jatico in Editorial writing (3rd), and Al Joy Nangan in Sci-Tech writing (3rd).

In group category, Ivan Tagab, Stephen Niño John, Angelito Quimbo, Darwin Pesquera and Franz Herald Alarba claimed victory in Radio Broadcasting (1st) while Justine Abigan, Renan Estrella, Nike Owen Maestrado, Josh Omandam and John Ryan Cabugawan placed third in Mobile Journalism.

In English journalism, under individual category, Mark Louie Maque triumphed in News Writing (1st), Diovann Angelo Mar in Feature Writing (2nd), Christian Dave Delposo in Column Writing (1st), Keene Ivan Adlawon in Editorial Writing (3rd), John David Villaflor in Copy Reading and Headline writing (2nd), John Carl Quintanilla in Editorial Cartooning (1st), Augusto Cesar Gamelo in Sports writing (2nd), Neilmarc Niño Mirasol in Photojournalism (1st), and Royce Aldrich Celebrado in Science and Technology Writing (2nd) respectively.

Moreover, John Angel Suclan, Johnrey James Nasara, Eize Nichol Fernandez, Karl Stephen Pajulas and Marc Angelo Salvaña prevailed in Collaborative Desktop Publishing (2nd) under group category.

The student-journalists occupying the top 3 notches in each category won for themselves an entry to the next level, the Area Schools Press Conference.

Royce Aldrich Celebrado, Science and Technology writer, expressed that though the results were unexpected and surprising, he was very thankful to represent the school.

“It was very surprising and I did not expect to triumph in the District Schools Press Conference. I am very thankful for the support that was given to me by my co-writers, coaches, and school Administrators,” said Celebrado.

“For this upcoming ASPC, I will do my very best so as not to put to waste the support that is given to me by my co-writers and coaches,” he added.

TUNGKOP, Minglanilla- The Social Science Department had their culminating activity at the school gymnasium last Friday, November 3, 2023.

The event was hosted by Ms. Aubrey Rose Undang and Mr. Steven Phritz Calumba. With this year’s theme of United Nations: “Equality, Freedom, and Justice for All”, the culminating activity was set to award winners in different competitions last October.

The program opened with an invocation led by the Aloysians Cebu Boys Choir followed by the singing of the Philippine National Anthem. Mr. Venedick James Albarracin, the school’s SSLG President, gave the opening remark. Awarding of winners per batch was held thereupon.

In due course, Mr. Rene Avito Colanag, the AP Subject Area Coordinator, concluded it all with his speech. "With all these activities, I had always have second thought; but in the end, it had good results,” he said. “We must not forget that October is United Nations Month. The United Nations was formed to safeguard national peace.” he added.

Jianne Paolo Allego, an AP student teacher, said, “Being part of the Social Science department is a privilege, and I’m happy as I have participated in the activities set by the department being an emcee and that experience is memorable.”

In celebration of the National Students' Day 2023, the Office of the School Activity Coordinator (OSAC) launches the giving of Schwartz Awards which is an award given to students who have shown outstanding performances in their respective clubs and organizations. This award is in recognition of the School Founder, Venerable Aloysius Philip Schwartz and is established to perpetuate Venerable Al’s examples of dedication, service, and integrity.

After a meticulous review of the students’ application of their individual Record of Student Club Activities, Contests and Performance Evaluation Form, 148 recipients of the "Schwartz Awards were identified. The awards were classified as the Golden, Silver and Bronze Schwartz Awards.

Neilmarc Niño L. Mirasol from Boystown Studio emerged as the Top Scorer followed by Rafael C. Orcullo Jr. from Boystown Studio on the second place and John Wayne C. Gacula from the Technographics Club on the third place.

GCC, PDO reorient Grade 11 students

MINGLANILLA, Cebu—the Guidance Counseling Center (GCC) and Prefect of Discipline Office (PDO) reoriented the Grade 11 Senior High School students of the Sisters of Mary School- Boystown, Inc. on the various policies and guidelines of tue school ast September 30, 2023, at the New Auditorium.

The event recalled all the essential information and services offered by the GCC and PDO to enhance the students' intrapersonal and interpersonal skills. All the basic rules and disciplinary practices for the school’s peace and order were also reviewed.

Mrs. Dale Dariangan, GCC Coordinator, emphasized that all those disciplinary measures would be worthless if the students themselves never have the courage to follow them.

Mrs. Carmen Torcende began to talk about matters in connection to the disciplinary practices of the school. She also reminded the students about the necessary practices in the school with emphasis on the attendance and proper decorum inside the classroom. “This kind of activity is for you boys, para makatulong sa inyong pag-aaral," she said.

Venedict James Albarracin, a Grade 11 student, and SSG President said, “This kind of activity is really essential for all the students in practicing discipline and proper attitude at school. However, if the students do not like to follow, these rules ay parang lang wala."

“Since you are being looked up to by your fellow students, you must be good examples to them," the Prefect of Discipline further emphasized to all the student teachers.

Science Exhibit 2023: SCIENCE, Not Magic

TUNGKOP, MINGLANILLA, CEBU - Sisters of Mary School - Boystown, Inc. conducted the Science Exhibit 2023 at the New Auditorium, Bio-Chem and Physics Laboratories of the school last September 19-21, 2023. The Science Exhibit 2023’s purpose was to provide experiential learning opportunities for the students that enhance their understanding of scientific concepts and at the same time nurture a range of skills and qualities that are valuable for their academic and personal development.

The event opened on September 19 with an opening prayer. The first viewers and interactors of the exhibit were the Grade 7 and 8 students. The exhibit composed of 15 stations which featured different and amazing science experiments. It likewise included different educational displays such as the human development and the anatomy of the eye and ear. Each of the stations had 2 demonstrators to inform, teach, and explain to the students how the experiment was undergone.

Tungkop National High School, Sisters of Mary- Girlstown, Inc, and Tuyan National High School also joined the experience at the exhibit. After the event, there was a series of photo opportunities to document the experience and to give the students the opportunity build their memory of the rare event. “I was so amazed when I saw the experiments, especially at the Station 8. It was like playing with fire,” said a Grade 9 Tungkop NHS student, “I have learned a lot of things that were not magic but Science."

"I was very amazed and very shocked at Station 8. And, for Station 10, I was very impressed with how the weight was distributed to the bulb,” said Lady Love, a Grade 12 Tungkop NHS student.

The event was then concluded by watching the remaining inventions and different science displays at the Bio-Chem and Physics Laboratory.
