WOJTEK THE BEAR

I think that you are asking about Wojtek, a Syrian brown bear adopted by the 22nd Supply Company of the Polish II Corps after an Iranian boy swapped the bear for cans of food.

Wojtek only ever reached the rank of corporal, but it has to be said that that is a pretty fair achievement for a bear.

Purchased in Iran, he accompanied the Poles to Egypt and then to Italy where he was present at the Battle of Monte Casino.

Wojtek became a cigarette smoking, or at least eating, beer-drinking (which can’t have been good for him) mascot and was apparently trained to hold new recruits upside down.

He is also reputed to have helped carry artillery shells in the battle for Monte Casino but this is probably apocryphal. Regardless, it didn’t stop the Poles changing their unit insignia to celebrate him.

When the war ended, the 22nd Company was billeted in Winfield Camp, near Hutton in Berwickshire. Wojtek was one of around three thousand troops in the camp and became a very popular figure with locals in the Borders before eventually retiring to Edinburgh Zoo where he died in 1963.
