Victor Wembanyama racked up 42 points and Chris Paul had a key four-point play late in regulation and a decisive 3-pointer with 20 seconds left in overtime as the San Antonio Spurs outlasted the visiting Atlanta Hawks 133-126 in the NBA on Thursday.

With Atlanta up by three points late in regulation, Paul sank a 3-pointer, was fouled and hit the free throw to give San Antonio a 119-118 lead with 56.5 seconds left. Wembanyama sank 1 of 2 free throws with 17.4 seconds left to make it a two-point game.

The Hawks’ De’Andre Hunter drove the lane for a dunk over Wembanyama with 11.1 seconds remaining to tie the game. After a Spurs turnover, Trae Young was short on a jumper contested by Wembanyama with two seconds left, sending the game into the extra period.

Wembanyama’s 3-pointer at the 1:52 mark of overtime put the Spurs ahead for good and was followed by a layup by Keldon Johnson with 1:35 left to push the advantage to four points. Paul’s 3-pointer with 19.5 seconds to go finished off Atlanta and clinched San Antonio’s third win in its last four games.

Devin Vassell added 23 points for the Spurs while Jeremy Sochan had 20, Paul finished with 12 and Keldon Johnson hit for 11 points.

Hunter scored 27 points to lead Atlanta, which took its third defeat in four games. Young added 23 points and 16 assists, Jalen Johnson hit for 22 points, Larry Nance Jr. tallied 21 points and 13 rebounds and Clint Capela and Bogdan Bogdanovic scored 10 points each for the Hawks.

Today in Filipino history, December 18, 1856, Graciano Lopez Jaena was born in Jaro, Iloilo

At a young age, his religious mother sent him to a seminary in Jaro, feeling that priesthood was the noble profession for her son. However, his study of religion and the atmosphere in the seminary did not prevent him from unleashing his energies against the oppressors of his country and people.

His frequent visits to the poor and ordinary people in the remote areas made him realize how bad their living conditions were under the Spanish rule.

Lively and intelligent, he took writing early in life and produced a tale entitled "Fray Botod" in 1874. The satirical novel ridiculed the friars as abusive, cruel, lazy, greedy and immoral, who spoke of saintly verses but could not see their own wrongdoings.

This infuriated the Spanish clergy and Lopez Jaena was forced to leave for Spain to study medicine (which he did not finish) at the University of Valencia to avoid threats to his life.

In Spain, from huge gatherings (social and political clubs), he bravely spoke about the evils of the Spanish rule in his country; denouncing vigorously the role of the friars in introducing and maintaining obscurantism in the Philippines and in obstructing progress of the people.

Historians regard Lopez Jaena, Marcelo del Pilar and Dr. Jose Rizal as the triumvirate of Filipino propagandists.

He was one of the founders and editors of La Solidaridad in 1888, which served as the mouthpiece of the Filipinos in Spain. As editor, Lopez Jaena did not receive any salary. His only compensation was free lodging, meals, clothing and a little pocket money for trivial expenses.

He also wrote in many publications in Europe, where his name became famous as the "Fighting Filipino Journalist" abroad.

His obsession to free his country sapped his physical strength, until he died of tuberculosis on January 20, 1896 in Barcelona, Spain. This was followed by the death of Marcelo H. del Pilar on July 4 of the same year, and of Dr. Rizal by firing squad on December 30, thus ending the great triumvirate of Filipino propagandists.

MARCOS APPROVES IMPLEMENTATION OF PH-SOUTH KOREA TRADE AGREEMENT

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Tuesday approved the implementation of commitments under the free trade agreement between the Philippines and South Korea.

He also approved two big-ticket projects worth P63.2 billion to enhance agricultural productivity, regional connectivity, and economic activity in the country.

Marcos approved the implementation of free trade commitments through the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) board, which he chairs, during its 23rd meeting and the last for 2024 in Malacañang.

During the meeting, the board approved the issuance of an Executive Order (EO) that will cover the country’s tariff commitments under the Philippines-Korea Free Trade Agreement (PH-KR FTA) signed on September 7, 2023 during the 43rd ASEAN Summit in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The agreement aims to strengthen economic relations between the two countries by facilitating trade and investment flows, removing barriers to market access, and creating new business and investment opportunities.

“The agreement will support government efforts to manage competitive exclusion vis-à-vis Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) neighbors, encourage more foreign direct investments, and secure more preferential concessions than those currently available under the Asean–Korea FTA and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement,” Neda’s statement read.

A powerful magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck just off the coast of Vanuatu on Tuesday, causing widespread destruction in the South Pacific island nation as the injured began arriving at a hospital and unconfirmed reports of casualties emerged.

A tsunami warning was called off less than two hours after the quake. With communications still down hours later and official information scarce, witness accounts of casualties began to surface on social media and through patchy phone calls.

The earthquake happened at just before 1 p.m. at a depth of 57 kilometers (35 miles) and was centered 30 kilometers west of Port Vila, the largest city in Vanuatu — a group of 80 islands that is home to about 330,000 people. It was followed by a magnitude 5.5 aftershock near the same location, with tremors continuing throughout the afternoon and evening.

It was not immediately clear how much damage was caused as phone lines and government websites remained down. In the first official information published on social media, the Geohazards Department said its monitoring systems remained offline due to power outages.

Residents were urged to stay away from coastlines for at least 24 hours — and until tsunami and earthquake monitoring systems were operational once again. No confirmed reports of damage or casualties were provided, but accounts detailing widespread destruction filtered out on social media and in interviews.

Crowds outside the hospital
Dan McGarry, a journalist based in Port Vila, told The Associated Press he heard of one death from a police officer outside Vila Central Hospital. McGarry saw three people on gurneys “in obvious distress,” he said.

Doctors were working “as fast as they could” at a triage center outside the emergency ward, he added. But the nation is not equipped for a mass casualty event, McGarry said.

PHILHEALTH ASSURES BENEFITS TO CONTINUE EVEN WITHOUT 2025 SUBSIDY

The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) on Monday committed to continue providing health benefits for Filipinos nationwide, assuring the public that it has enough funds to do so.

PhilHealth made the pronouncement after the bicameral conference committee decided to completely cut its P74.431 billion subsidy for 2025 down to zero.

According to PhilHealth, the bicam’s decision reflected its “wisdom” and acknowledged that the committee understood the agency’s capacity to continue managing the National Health Insurance Program.

“PhilHealth will continue to pay for the health benefits of all Filipinos, with or without government subsidy. It is our goal to finance the best care and benefits available,” PhilHealth said in a statement.

“Our financial position is strong and sufficient to sustain our operations, with a total of P281 billion in reserves and P150 billion in surplus funds as of October 2024,” it added.

President Marcos on Monday committed to restore the P10 billion that was slashed from the proposed funding of the Department of Education (DepEd), but clarified that it will not be through a line-item veto of the questioned provision in the P6.352-trillion 2025 General Appropriations Bill (GAB).

In an interview, the President said he was hopeful that he and the lawmakers could still work out a tweak before he signs the GAB, adding that the proposal to cut P10 billion from the DepEd’s computerization program was “contrary to the policy direction” of his administration on education.

MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos on Monday committed to restore the P10 billion that was slashed from the proposed funding of the Department of Education (DepEd), but clarified that it will not be through a line-item veto of the questioned provision in the P6.352-trillion 2025 General Appropriations Bill (GAB).

“We are still talking about it and we are trying to find a way and I think we’ll still be able to do something. We are working on that item because it is very necessary,” the President noted.

“The original request of … P12 billion is only sufficient to maintain what they [in DepEd] are already doing, when in fact, they have to do more. So we have to figure that out. We’re working on it to make sure that we will restore it,” Mr. Marcos added.

At last, Mary Jane Veloso is returning to the Philippines after 14 years behind bars in Indonesia, nine of which she spent on death row for a drug trafficking conviction, an Indonesian official and Malacañang announced on Monday.

“The day of her homecoming was not [on] the horizon before, but now we see it breaking at dawn,” the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers (NUPL) said, after Indonesia’s deputy coordinator of immigration and corrections, Nyoman Gede Surya Mataram, confirmed the Filipino domestic helper’s imminent repatriation.

Veloso, 39, will be flown to the Philippines in the early hours of Dec. 18, Mataram told a press conference in Jakarta on Monday afternoon.

Officials from the Philippine Embassy were to pick her up from her detention facility in the Indonesian capital.

Malacañang on Monday vowed to abide by its commitment to honor the conditions under the prisoner-transfer agreement between Jakarta and Manila.

“Duty-bound as we are to honor the conditions for her transfer to Philippine jurisdiction, we are truly elated to welcome Mary Jane back to her homeland and family, from whom she has been distanced for too long,” Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin said in a statement.
