UPV and ISAT-U Miagao collaborate to advance citizen journalism

The University of the Philippines Visayas’ The Western Visayas Portal (TWVP) and Iloilo Science and Technology University - Miagao Campus’ The Techno Forum joined forces in a workshop titled “Tingog Mo, Tingog Ko: A Basic Citizen Journalism Workshop on Using Social Media for Social Good” on May 20, 2024 at the ISAT-U Hostel.

The seminar aimed to empower campus and citizen journalists to leverage their skills and social media platforms to serve the public and champion truth. It also sought to prepare citizen journalists for the critical role of reporting during the upcoming 2025 elections.

Dr. Zoilo S. Andrada, Jr., founder and adviser of The Western Visayas Portal, highlighted the responsibilities of campus and citizen journalists in covering elections and understanding social media algorithms, which significantly impact information flow and democracy.

Discussion Highlights

The TWVP staff provided extensive training to The Techno Forum’s 30 participants on various aspects of election-related journalism, including voter education, news writing, digital content creation, scriptwriting for digital broadcasting, civic engagement through social media, and fact-checking.

Lara Grace Palay, TWVP editor-in-chief, emphasized the media's role as the fourth estate in safeguarding democracy.

“I’d like to emphasize our role as journalists, as media, in being the checks and balances of the government especially that today our democracy is at risk,” she stated.

TWVP Copy Editors Kobe Patrick Serinas and Jannelle Rellin discussed digital content generation, stressing the importance of adapting content to different social media platforms while maintaining journalistic integrity. “We must balance perspectives and remain fair in our content,” Serinas noted.

Jasmine Kris Caleza and Ma. Louiela Mataac, TWVP layout artists, conducted a refresher on news writing, particularly during election sea*ons. Caleza underscored the necessity for journalists to be well-versed in election-related legislation and activities to keep the public informed.

Mike Joshua Garmillos, associate editor, and Chikki Villanueva, copy editor, addressed the significance of digital journalism and scriptwriting for broadcasting and social media. They concluded their session by stressing the importance of using digital platforms to convey impactful, truthful, and unbiased messages.

Associate Editor Josine Elinor Luison discussed the impact of social media algorithms and the critical need for fact-checking in the digital age. “With fake news easily swaying public opinion, fact-checking is crucial,” Luison emphasized.

Dr. Andrada concluded by discussing the importance of fact-checking amid widespread disinformation, particularly during elections. He advised participants to be responsible storytellers, ensuring accuracy and trustworthiness in their narratives.

Workshop Activity

In the afternoon session, participants from The Techno Forum engaged in a practical workshop, applying their skills in news writing, digital content creation, live reporting, and fact-checking to real-life scenarios.

“We are very grateful to The Western Visayas Portal for this partnership and the valuable lessons shared. This collaboration strengthens our commitment to responsible journalism and better equips us to serve the public,” said Julius Jose Borjal, The Techno Forum’s editor-in-chief.

“This collaborative event marks the beginning of a strong partnership between UPV and ISAT-U in promoting informed communities and empowering journalists,” said Dr. Loriedee Bentula, Chair, Board of Advisers, The Techno Forum and Head, Office of Instruction, ISAT-U Miagao Campus

The two Universities are set to launch digital journalism guidelines for adoption by regional universities and organizations.

“Tingog Mo, Tingog Ko” is one of the major activities in empowering campus and citizen journalists as part of the MOU signed by Dr. Zoilo Andrada Jr. representing UP Visayas as the first FactsFirstPH organization outside Metro Manila and Gemma Mendoza representing Rappler last October 2023.

The Western Visayas Portal is the official publication of the CMS 135 class, under the Communication and Media Studies program of the Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Science, UPV. The course aims to develop students' abilities to critically evaluate and responsibly publish information on social media. (Lara Grace Palay with reports from TWVP staff)

𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐭-𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐠𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠? 🐶

X (formerly Twitter) user, , who has deactivated their account since the issue, sparked controversy when they accused Dress Up Fashion, a thrift shop located in Quezon City, of mistreating dogs at their establishment.

The user claimed that the dogs were illegally being sold by the owners of the thrift shop and that they were not taken care of.

"Ang lala naman pala dyan. pati a*o na may buhay parang laruan na binebenta. pota anong ukay dogs, kagalit.", One user posted.

"That's illegal then. If they have business license/ permit as apparels then doon lang sila sa given business approval from the authorities." Another user replied.

The now-deleted original post garnered several replies, most of which were directed to the establishment, demanding accountability, and calling out the establishment for abusing animals.

Dress Up Fashion later released an official statement, rebutting these claims and by saying that the dogs in the cages were their pets and were well taken care of. They also explained that the dogs were there in the first place because they could not be left alone in the owners' rented apartment and would never be put up for sale.

Dress Up Fashion's legal team has reached out to the original poster for legal action to compensate for the damages to their establishment’s reputation.

To report the mistreatment of animals, contact PAWS (Please ask the establishment before reporting any alleged mistreatment of animals):

CLAIM: Fern-D cures UTI!
FACT: Antibiotics as the best treatment for UTI

A Facebook user selling I-Fern products posted last April 22 about a “miracle pill” called FERN-D that can cure urinary tract infection (UTI). It was a “powerful healing testimony” from one of their clients who apparently acquired UTI and was later healed by daily intake of the vitamin supplement. Their client claimed that they did not drink any other medicine but just FERN-D together with water, Yakult, and coconut juice for approximately two weeks.

However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says otherwise. It is the US’ national public health agency – a leading science-based and data-driven service organization raising awareness around the world for more than 70 years. According to CDC, antibiotics prescribed by a healthcare professional treat UTI. However, more severe cases may require hospitalization.

This is yet another instance that reiterates the value of fact-checking, especially with social media’s pace and reach. Regardless of intentions, issues particularly related to health or life have to be treated with utmost care. If articulated haphazardly, it could pose potential risks to the well-being or financial situation of consumers. When selling these type of products, one has to ensure that medical claims are backed by timely and accurate research.

SHUT DOWN DISINFORMATION, NOT MASUNGI.

On April 29, a news article came out on The Philippine Star newspaper and OneNews PH [1] website which claims that “environmentalists”, particularly a person named Bernadette Torres, are calling for the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to inspect the internationally recognized conservation area Masungi Georeserve in Rizal. This move arose after Torres alleged that Masungi Georeserve Foundation, Inc. (MGFI) violated legal and environmental standards set by DENR.

However, this news contains DISINFORMATION.

Firstly, Bernadette Torres’ identity and affiliation to any environmental organization is unknown. There is also no public statement released by Bernadette Torres as opposed to what was written in the news.

Moreover, Masungi Georeserve, on their page [2] also debunked this false information and questioned the credibility of the news since the article has no byline and was found to be a story “presented by” DENR as shown on OneNews PH website. However, on May 1, DENR was removed to be the presenter of the news and was changed into Vena Energy, a company that works on renewable energy for the Asia-Pacific region. In short, this article is a paid or sponsored story to further a particular cause.

It is important to scrutinize the news we consume. Especially with the advent of social media, we become more vulnerable to misinformation and disinformation. In verifying content, always remember A-C-T-S: author, context, timeliness, and sources.

For additional context on DENR vs. Masungi issue:
[3] The long-running animosity between DENR and Masungi started with the Bureau of Correction’s contention on the lot that was originally registered under its name. It was later declared part of the national park, wildlife sanctuary, and protected area where Masungi is located. BuCor initially wanted it to be the relocation site of the New Bilibid Prison. However, after the public’s backlash, they are now pushing for the area to be developed as residential use for BuCor personnel and employees instead.

Masungi has constantly been put in danger with persistent attempts of DENR to shut it down, environmental rangers were shot by unidentified assailants in 2020, illegal squatting and intimidation of armed personnel, and quarrying companies illegally fencing off the georeserve’s 500 hectares of protected land.

OY! SI FAKE NEWS PEDDLER PALA TO EH! 🫵💥🤪

Fake accounts have been circulating on social media, and surprisingly, they have garnered several engagements and popularity. This is due to the contents they post that intrigue and hook the audience, especially the present generation.

One example is this scholarship post on the PRC Board News & Updates page. The account currently has around 15k followers, which makes them look credible to social media users, especially to students seeking scholarships for college.

According to this post, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) is currently offering a scholarship opportunity and financial assistance for students this upcoming academic year (2024-2025). However, the institution reiterated that no scholarship opportunities are available yet for the students. The link provided in the post unfortunately leads to an unreliable blog site where sensitive information is asked, which often leads to phishing and hacking scams.

In this regard, despite the immediate need to apply for scholarships and assistance for college, the credibility and facts of the page and the website should be thoroughly checked first. Look for official check marks and website domains of the institutions to avoid the risk of being scammed.

𝑻𝒓𝒖𝒕𝒉 𝒐𝒓 𝑻𝒓𝒐𝒍𝒍? 𝐃𝐀𝐏𝐀𝐓 𝐃𝐎𝐎𝐍 𝐓𝐀𝐘𝐎 𝐒𝐀 𝐓𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇! 🫵😌

Multiple Facebook groups and pages, such as "Filipino Gazette,” with around 16,000 followers, and "PRC Job Opportunities," with over 45,000 followers, have posted about the Philippine Army hiring. The posts mentioned some qualifications, such as no age limit and being an SHS graduate, TESDA-certified, or 72-unit earner, as well as a monthly salary of PHP43,800, and attached application links.

With its name and number of followers, it is no wonder that a majority thought that the said Facebook groups and pages were authentic or verified. However, all the information they spread is merely 𝗙𝗔𝗞𝗘 𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗦.

Firstly, the links they provided unfortunately lead to various blog sites and other unreliable websites asking for personal details, which may result in phishing and hacking scams. The official website of the Philippine Army can only be found at https://jointhearmy.ph/, which includes all necessary and true qualifications and requirements, as well as monthly salaries and other benefits.

As opposed to what is mentioned by the said Facebook groups and pages, joining the army necessitates one to be at least 21 to 27 years old and a bachelor’s degree holder or college graduate. An SHS graduate, TESDA-certified, or 72-unit earner could only apply to be enlisted personnel, not an army. Additionally, the official website also mentioned that the average monthly salary is around Php42,056 for officer candidates or those still under training and Php51,829 for second lieutenant officers.

The Philippine Army's official page also released a statement on April 24, 2024, condemning and debunking such malicious content. They reminded the public to be vigilant about these posts and to be responsible social media users and consumers to avoid being victims of fake news.

Below is the link to the Philippine Army's official statement:

Because of its decentralized nature, social media allows people to freely consume and produce content, sadly resulting in a rampant surge of false information. Hence, it is crucial to 𝗔𝗟𝗪𝗔𝗬𝗦 𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗙𝗬 all the information you see and obtain before believing and sharing it with the public. 𝘐𝘬𝘢 𝘯𝘨 𝘯𝘨 𝘭𝘰𝘭𝘢 𝘯𝘪 𝘊𝘰𝘤𝘰 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘯, 𝘩𝘶𝘸𝘢𝘨 𝘮𝘢𝘩𝘪𝘩𝘪𝘺𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘯𝘨.
