TODAY is the feast day of St. George, a soldier of the Roman army who was tortured and beheaded for his Christian faith in the year 303, in Lydda...

St. George is usually depicted in Christian art as a soldier on horseback killing a dragon with a lance. This image is a representation of a popular legend of St. George which first appears in 1265 in a romance titled "The Golden Legend," in which he saved a town terrorized by a dragon with one blow of his lance. The image, however, is also, and more significantly, a powerful symbol of the victory of Christian faith over evil (sometimes interpreted more contextually in the early Church as “paganism”), personified by the devil who is symbolized by the dragon according to the imagery in Revelations.

[Let us pray] Keep your family safe, O Lord, with unfailing care, that, relying solely on the hope of heavenly grace, they may be defended always by your protection. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen!

St Bernadette was born the eldest of nine children into a poor family at Lourdes, France. On 11th February 1858, when she was 14, she had her first vision from the Blessed Virgin Mary. At first, Bernadette and her friends kept the visions secret but news soon spread and a further seventeen were recorded.

St Bernadette joined the Sisters of Charity in Nevers where she performed routine convent and church duties as well as daily religious devotion with her congregation. From youth, she suffered severe asthma and in later life, she contracted tuberculosis of the bone. She died at the young age of 35. Her body was exhumed many years later and found not to have decomposed. It was placed in a new casket and is today displayed in the Chapel of St Bernadette, Nevers. Her Feast Day is 16th April, the day of her death.

On this special day, as we commemorate the 𝟗𝟒𝐭𝐡 𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲 of the esteemed +Bishop Ben, let us gather in reverence and reflection. For those who had been blessed to know him, Bishop Ben, the venerable 2nd Bishop of our Diocese, will always have a special place in their hearts and memories. Even though he is no longer with us physically, his unyielding devotion to his faith, his unwavering service to others, and his great knowledge continue to inspire us.

As we offer our prayers in remembrance of Bishop Ben, let us not only honor his legacy but also reflect on the profound impact he had on our community. Through his tireless efforts, he instilled in us the values of compassion, empathy, and love for our fellow beings. His teachings served as a guiding light, illuminating the path of righteousness and fostering a sense of unity among us.

Though Bishop Ben may no longer walk among us, his spirit lives on in the deeds of kindness and the words of wisdom that continue to shape our lives. Let us carry forward his legacy with humility and grace, striving each day to emulate his example of selflessness and service to others.
