Amid the challenges our country facesโ€”where greed, corruption, and deception continue to wound our nationโ€”this Christmas season brings a renewed call for hope and unity.

May those who benefit from the suffering of others find the courage to cleanse their hands and return what is rightfully owed to the people. Let us come together to sweep away the dust of lies and heal the scars of our land. In this season of love and giving, may truth, justice, and compassion guide us toward a brighter and more peaceful future for the Philippines.

Mindanao's rich cultural tapestry, woven from centuries of tradition and innovation, took center stage at the Davao Oriental State University (DorSU) through a Literary Fest, a pioneering event hosted by the university LIT 10 faculty members, with the theme โ€œReclaiming Our Roots: Celebrating the Voices of Mindanaoโ€. The festival showcased the rich tapestry of Mindanao's cultural heritage through a dynamic blend of traditional ballad singing, powerful slam poetry, and imaginative cosplay, held at the University Student Center (SC), last December 10, 2024.

The vibrant celebration was an uproar as students from different programs with LIT 10 subject courses had their full participation in the various events; a blend of forces in bringing to life the Mindanaoโ€™s sounds and stories, filling every corner of the center.

In the morning, the opening performances featured a mesmerizing tape of traditional Mindanao ballads from all entries. Each song, with such heartfelt passion, transported the audience back in time, echoing tales of love, loss, heroism, and the enduring spirit of the Mindanaoan people. The reflective melodies and lyrics painted vivid pictures of the localityโ€™s history and folklore, reminding attendees of the deep-rooted traditions knitted in the region.

Following the ballads, the stage transformed into an instant international theatrical stage as the slam poetry competitors took the spotlight. Talented students from the 28 entries took center stage as they retold the awakening narratives of Mindanaoโ€™s diverse experiences. From tales of resiliency in the face of adversity to a celebration of cultural pride, the performance sparked moments of laughter, reflection, and shared opinions. The raw emotion of poetic skills on display served as a testament to the power of spoken word in preserving and protecting cultural heritage.

Adding a unique and visually stunning dimension to the event was a captivating cosplay segment. Participants brought to life the myths and legends of Mindanao, drawing inspiration from various literary sources. This portion displays the intricate detail of creative interpretations of iconic figures from Mindanao folklore bringing the audience into the realm of fantasy.

Ultimately, the Literary Fest is not merely an event, it served as a reminder that the voices of Mindanao, expressed through art and storytelling, are essential to understand as it holds the insignia of the Mindanaoan community. Visualizing the horizon of Mindanao literacy through these innovative platforms entails not only the presentation of beliefs but also embodying and embracing the race imprinted in Mindanaoanโ€™s soul. A festival aimed to showcase the intricate cultural heritage that has shaped the archipelagoโ€™s unique identity, planted in every fiber of Mindanaoโ€™s sanctuary.

A recent Facebook post by Junior Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (JPICE) - DOrSU Chapter President Jumbo Fernandez has sparked discussions among DOrSU students regarding the implementation of a new retention policy for specific programs, including Civil Engineering.

In response to the policy, the JPICE-DOrSU Chapter officers have initiated a petition for reconsideration and realignment of the amended policy as its implications extend beyond Civil Engineering students and affect other board programs within the university. The said student organization is now actively seeking a review of the policy to address concerns and ensure a fair and equitable academic environment for all students.

How about you, Ta? Are you in favor of the retention policy? Share your thoughts in the comment section.

With the theme "Artistic Cornucopia: Fine Art, Gastronomy, Music, and Dance," the Hum-10 Arts Appreciation Fun Fair Fest, held on December 8 at the Old Library, DOrSU Main Campus, became a celebration of artistry and creativity, highlighting the skills and inventiveness of DOrSU students.

Postponed from its original December 4 schedule due to Panaghigalaay 2024, the said fair fest served as a final performance-based examination for the course and to cultivate students' appreciation for the arts.

Led by HUM-10 instructor Marielle Thery A. Jumawan, the fair brought together students from nine different sections, including HE 1, SNED 1, FIL 1A and 1B, EDM 1A, BSN 1A to 1D, and EDM 1A. The hall was transformed into a lively cultural hub featuring dynamic dance performances, creative culinary displays, and fine art exhibitions. Mandaya tribe-inspired ethnic wares, crafted from recyclable materials, highlighted sustainability and cultural heritage, adding a distinctive eco-friendly element. Moreover, each participating section showcased its unique interpretations of art and culture, offering attendees a full sensory experience with stunning visual art, inventive food presentations, and vibrant dance routines.

According to Ms. Jumawan, this event was her way of leaving a lasting impressionโ€”an experienceโ€”for the Humanities 10-Arts Appreciation class. "I tried last semester na mahitabo ni sya as a coordinated departmental event, but dili siya feasible because we have different teaching styles and principles. Maybe in the future. Maybe. Just maybe, can't tell," she mentioned, expressing her hope for the future of such artistic gatherings.

The success of the fair was a testament to the students' hard work and the faculty's dedication to nurturing a strong cultural appreciation. The event not only celebrated individual talent but also reinforced the unifying power of the arts. As the curtains closed, the event left an unforgettable impression on attendees, laying the foundation for even greater artistic showcases in the future.

On the vibrant afternoon of December 4, 2024, the Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU) gymnasium became a haven of camaraderie as students gathered to celebrate Panaghigalaay 2024. The event, themed around friendship, unity, and the spirit of community, radiated with joy as laughter, smiles, and applause filled the air.

Bringing together students from the universityโ€™s seven facultiesโ€” Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences (FALS), Faculty of Computing, Engineering, and Technology (FACET), Faculty of Teacher Education (FTED), Faculty of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences (FNAHS), and the newly established faculties, Faculty of Business Management (FBM), Faculty of Criminal Justice Education (FCJE), and Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Communication (FHUSOCOM). The event showcased the university's diverse yet united community.

The stage came alive with performances that highlighted the studentsโ€™ exceptional talents. Melodious chorales and energetic live bands filled the gymnasium with music, while captivating interpretative and traditional folk dance painted a vivid picture of cultural pride performed by the universityโ€™s participants for MASTS Friendship Games 2024 last November, which drew enthusiastic applause, reflecting the students' passion and creativity.

The event reached its peak during the highly anticipated Cheers and Yells Competition, where faculties vied for the coveted title of champion. The gym echoed with thunderous chants and synchronized movements as each faculty displayed their school spirit. After an intense and electrifying showdown, FNAHS emerged victorious, claiming the championship title. Meanwhile, the faculties of criminal justice (FCJE) and teacher education (FTED) secured the first and second runners up spots, respectively.

Adding to the spirit of celebration was the Club Fair held at the DOrSU Student Center, where various booths showcased the unique identities of each organization. This served as a platform for students to enjoy exploring different clubs and organizations, fostering greater awareness, engagement, and participation within the university community, honing the student's leadership skills through collaborations and engagement.

The event was more than just a day of performances and competition; it was a celebration of friendship and unity despite the diversity, a reminder of the strength found in the community, and a testament to the vibrant spirit of DOrSU.

Geared towards the realization of open communication, accountability, and responsibility while strengthening student comradeship within the DOrSU student community, the University Student Council (USC) hosted a Student Parliament as part of the Panaghigalaay 2024 festivities yesterday, December 4, 2024.

The event brought together students from the universityโ€™s seven faculties: Faculty of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences (FNAHS), Faculty of Teacher Education (FTED), Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences (FALS), Faculty of Computing, Engineering, and Technology (FACET), and the newly established Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Communication (FHUSOCOM), Faculty of Business Management (FBM), and Faculty of Criminal Justice Education (FCJE). Each faculty was represented by its respective governor.

The faculty governorsโ€”Keren Leah Cortez (FNAHS), Josh Eric Jaljis (FTED), Jefferson Gonhuran (FALS), Tristan Portugaliza (FACET), Lexcy Lex Bargamento (FHUSOCOM), Albert Magadan (FBM), and Francis Lance Nadonza (FCJE)โ€”courageously stood before thousands of students to address concerns that have seemingly caused divisiveness within the student body.

One major discussion point was the management of student concerns through proper channels, particularly those related to inappropriate remarks allegedly shared in an anonymous Facebook group targeting student organizations and peers. The discourse centered on enhancing student well-being by exploring constructive ways to address concerns and promote respectful online interactions.

The event further explored topics such as USC's response to the mentioned students' Facebook group, the implementation of sanction protocols, strategies to enhance communication channels in relation to timely and accurate dissemination of information, and effective measures for student accountability.

The event turned out to be purposeful as it thrived to solidify the spirit of oneness among the student community while attending to the issues with accountability and responsibility.
