𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗸𝗼𝗯 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗜𝗖𝗘 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 '24

The JPICE - Davao Oriental State University Chapter (JPICE-DOrSU) kicked off the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE) Week festivities on November 13th, launching off with a vibrant parade featuring their proud tribes, known as "Tribus," inspired by Philippine mythology, namely Tribong Lakapati, Tribong Apolaki, Tribong Mayari, Tribong Idianale, Tribong Anitun Tabu, Tribong Dumakulem, Tribong Sidapa, and Tribong Diwata, at the university grandstand.

In his opening remarks, Engr. Owen Francis Maongat, JPICE-DOrSU Chapter Adviser, emphasized that PICE Week is not just a celebration of skills and knowledge, but rather unity within the Civil Engineering community.

The CE Fun Games commenced on the second and third day, where each team took on the challenge of pseudo-volleyball, pop the balloon, and sack race events. The teamwork continued in the afternoon as they traversed through eight stations on the amazing race, where Tribong Lakapati commenced as champion, followed by Tribong Mayari and Anitun Tabu.

On the fourth day, the spotlight turned to the candidates of Ginoo at Hiyas ng CE 2024, where Tribong Anitun Tabu's Gazell Palero and Emelyn Diongzon stood out, taking home minor awards and notable titles. They were joined by runner-ups Mel John Empuesto and Rio Kyle Ventura, and Jan Jezrell Mauro and Reynalene Tero.

Moreover, the CE Got Talent competition electrified the gymnasium as talented civil engineering students showcased their skills and talents in the variety show. Tribu Lakapati emerged as the ultimate victor, while tribus Anitun Tabu and Mayari claimed the first and second runner-up positions, respectively.

As the intense competition of Sansinukob came to a close, Tribong Anitun Tabu emerged as the top champion, followed by Apolaki and Lakapati in the overall rankings.

The 4-day event ended with high spirits as they celebrated altogether in unity, consequently, it was wrapped up by JPICE Adviser Engr. Owen Francis Maongat who expressed gratitude to esteemed guests, JPICE members, and keynote speakers Engr. Ruel Dumagdag (PICE-DavOr President) and Engr. John Christopher Algallar (Assistant Provincial Engineer), contributing to the event's success.

𝐅𝐍𝐀𝐇𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬 2024 𝐇𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐒 | 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗮𝗽𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀

The Faculty of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences (FNAHS) successfully hosted their highly anticipated FNAHSocialis last November 14-15 at Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU) - main campus. Embracing the celebration's theme, ‘FNAHSocialis: Where We Celebrate Every Emotion,’ brought the spirit of Pixar’s animated film, ‘Inside Out,’ to life, encouraging students to explore and embrace the complexities of human emotions.

Students from all year levels under the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program were organized into ten teams, each representing an emotion: Ennui, Joy, Fear, Embarrassment, Disgust, Sadness, Nostalgia, Anger, Anxiety, and Envy, encouraging Tatang Student Nurses (SNs) to recognize every emotion as an essential aspect of both their personal and academic growth.

Parading their emotion colors, each team has brought forth their creativity in group chants and creative costumes, which embody the spirit of their assigned emotions. Each team also demonstrated their skills in offline and traditional games and various sports competitions, with victory and camaraderie in mind, culminating in Team Anxiety taking the overall champion title, with teams Sadness and Envy securing second and third places, respectively.

In addition, beyond the games and festivities, FNAHSocialis also featured insightful symposiums. Sir Edmar Jay Rara, RN, LPT, led the Mental Health Awareness Symposium, focusing on the importance of mental health as a form of self-care for nurses, sharing words of wisdom from Dr. Kristin Neff, a pioneering researcher on self-compassion, that says, “We need to have self-compassion to recharge our batteries and have the energy needed to serve others.” Meanwhile, Miss Sitti Ram Maela Pasandan, RN, passionately advocated for a smoke-free lifestyle in the Smoking Cessation symposium, urging attendees to “stop smoking, start living.”

Highlighting self-care and a smoke-free lifestyle as integral to a healthier future for student nurses, both as future healthcare providers and educators, FNAHSocialis served as a reminder that every emotion contributes to building resilience, empathy, and compassion—qualities essential in nursing.

The aforementioned celebration served as a powerful reminder for Tatang SNs that every emotion is vital in developing resilience, empathy, and compassion—qualities that define the nursing profession. Overall, this year's FNAHSocialis celebrates self-awareness and emotional acceptance while emphasizing the strength, passion, and unity that drive the nursing community.

Events such as this are a reminder that we are not alone in what we feel, and simply understanding that is powerful.

With grace and beauty, the stunning 2nd-year student from Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management (BSHM), Zyrelle Khate Paeta, was crowned Ms. FBM 2024, while the promising freshman from Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA), Patrick Kem Masamayor, bagged the title of Mr. FBM 2024. Their unique charms and powerful display of wit and elegance set the stage ablaze during the Coronation Night on November 12, 2024, at the Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU) gymnasium.

The competition highlighted unique segments featuring the candidates with their playsuit attires, jeans wear, and elegant evening looks, where the dashing duo captured the hearts of the audience, making the night full of surprises. Meanwhile, the Mr. and Ms. Culture Arts 2024 titles were confidently taken by Neljan Ajang and Hentreilyn Mahilum, respectively. Coming third are Christian Baquido and Krizh Bhea Galoso winning the Mr. and Ms. Palakasan 2024.

The newly crowned Mr. and Ms. FBM 2024 will soon take on the challenge for Ginoo at Hiyas ng Siglakas 2025.

𝐅𝐁𝐌 𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐊 2024 | 𝐖𝐀𝐑𝐑𝐈𝐎𝐑𝐒 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐌𝐘𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐋 𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐋𝐌𝐒: 𝐏𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐲-𝐖𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐰𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧

The Faculty of Business and Management (FBM) celebrated its first faculty-level sports and literary arts competition, themed, "Blooming with Innovation, Thriving towards Success". This event aimed to foster unity and build strong relationships among students within the faculty. The festival of talent brought together the student forces of Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management (BSHM) and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) programs towards a meaningful engagement, harnessing their potential in various fields. Successfully launched on November 11-12, 2024 at Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU) with the pioneering initiative of the FBMSO officers together with the support of faculties.

The two-day event sparked a competitive spirit among participants, with students grouped by their year level to demonstrate their collaborative creativity, strength, and wit in various challenges set for them.

Day 1 featured the fiery display of athletic skills of the sport-oriented individuals including the fields of volleyball, badminton, billiards, table tennis, athletics, and so on. The vocal-breaking cheers of the crowd went louder on Day 2 during the championship games, escalating the excitement to new heights. Simultaneously, literary enthusiasts showcased their abilities in their crafts whether be it between the lines of spoken word poetry or the subtle strokes in painting, their might reverberate in their pieces that reflect profound narratives.

Additionally, faculty members actively participated in the games celebrating the week alongside the students.

As the largest community in the university, this event was an avenue to reinforce the existing relationships between BSHM and BSBA after its recent division with the BSC program. Through these efforts, bolstering the faction of FBM, emerging talents will soon champion their vision of unity and soon strike in the biggest sports and sociocultural event, the Siglakas 2025.

𝐒𝐏𝐎𝐑𝐓𝐒 𝐔𝐏𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄 | 𝗗𝗢𝗿𝗦𝗨 𝗔𝘁𝗵𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗦𝗼𝗮𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗣𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗮𝘁 𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗔 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 2024

At the 8th Philippine National Para Games in Manila, last November 11, 2024, the crowd witnessed more than just games—they saw grit, determination, and victory. Jan Wilfred Redulla and Mary Eloise Sable, athletes from Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU), emerged as shining examples of courage, bringing home silver and bronze medals, making DOrSU proud.

Jan Wilfred Redulla, a determined civil engineering student, showcased his skill and spirit by winning a silver medal in men’s PARA table tennis singles under Class 8 for athletes with cerebral palsy. With a powerful grip and precise timing, Jan clinched a hard-fought 3-2 victory against the strong competitor from Bataan.

“I won by applying what I practiced and following my coach’s advice,” Redulla shared, reflecting on the intense training he did with Batang Pinoy athletes from Mati City, including his nephew. Under the guidance of Coach Israel Tayam, Jan sharpened his game, focusing on grip, accuracy, and mental toughness. “Though the final match was close, I’m grateful to have earned silver in my first national PARA Games. This victory is thanks to my family, coach, and God.”

Mary Eloise Sable, a student of Special Needs Education at DOrSU from Cateel, claimed the bronze medal in women’s PARA table tennis singles under Class 10 for athletes with a leg length discrepancy. Sable demonstrated remarkable tenacity and precision, holding her ground against a challenging field. Her performance proved her adaptability and determination.

"At the end of the day, a big part of what helped me win was going in with a calm mindset and simply giving my best (kung unsa ang makaya, buhata)," she shared. Her joy is evident after securing a bronze medal at the Philippine National Para Games 2024. Balancing academics made it difficult for her to train as intensely as she would have liked, so she leaned heavily on her past experiences.

"It was a reminder that preparation isn't just physical; sometimes it's just as much about the mindset and confidence that years of experience bring," she added.

As they look toward their next challenge, Jan and Mary Eloise carry with them not just medals but also the pride of a university and the hopes of countless others who see themselves in their journey. Their triumphs are not just measured in silver and bronze but in the strength it takes to rise, the will to compete, and the courage to dream. 𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊 | 𝗥𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: 𝗜𝗘𝗖 𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿 2 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀

Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU) launched the second year of its initiative, “REthinking Impact: IEC on Biodiversity Conservation and Regenerative Development." This environmental forum, organized by DOrSU’s Green Pulse, the DOrSU's Office of Student Affairs (OSA), the DOrSU's Regional Integrated Coastal Resource Management Center (RIC XI), the Biology Teacher's Association (BIOTA) of the Philippines - Davao Chapter, the rethinking rebuilding regenerating (rrreefs), the DOrSU's Macro and Micro Plastic Pollution (M2P2) Program, and the DOrSU's Eastern Mindanao Biodiversity Corridor Research Program, gathered student leaders from various organizations of the university to address pressing biodiversity challenges and promote the principles of regenerative development and future thinking of DOrSU at the university Graduate School Library on November 6, 2024.

The discussions of the aforementioned forum highlighted the pivotal role of DOrSU's “Regenerative Future and Thinking” branding movement in shaping the university's identity, values, and transformative impact on the community.

SUC President III Roy G. Ponce, a prominent figure in the future thinking of the university, shed light on the importance of preserving coastal areas. His project, "HFK Plastic-Use Education for Children in Coastal Areas," aims to foster responsible plastic use through educational campaigns conducted specifically on coastal areas and seeks to expand further to encourage sustainable practices, including student leaders, to battle environmental consequences and regenerate biodiversity loss. This project has been actively implemented for years now showing the university’s earnest commitment towards a regenerative future.

Moreover, Ms. Vanessa Asaias-Yncierto, the founding director of DOrSU's Center for Futures Thinking and Regenerative Development (CFTRD), reinforced the importance of student engagement in realizing the university's vision of a sustainable and regenerative community. In her presentation titled "Becoming a Regenerative Futures University in the Asia-Pacific: Challenges, Opportunities, and Future Directions," Asaias-Yncierto inspired attendees to adopt the principles of regenerative thinking in their everyday lives.

Meanwhile, Ms. Amy G. Ponce, Project Leader for Cluster 5 of the Eastern Mindanao Biodiversity Corridor (EMBC) research program, shared her insights on coral reef restoration. Her presentation, "3D Clay Reef Systems: An Innovative Approach for Coral Regeneration in Pujada Bay," highlighted the urgency of restoring marine ecosystems and demonstrated how innovative reef systems can facilitate marine recovery.

DOrSU’s ongoing environmental projects have produced substantial results, contributing significantly to environmental welfare. In achieving to enhance our community's resilience, it is essential to move forward collectively, taking active roles as stewards of environmental sustainability and a regenerative future.

𝐒𝐀𝐌𝐁𝐔𝐎𝐊𝐀𝐍 2024 | 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗶 𝗥𝗲𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗣𝗮𝗴𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗮 2024, 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆’𝘀 𝗣𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀

City of Mati Local Government Unit (LGU) revived the Pagkila 2024 event, honoring six pioneering Matinian leaders who shaped the city, last October 29 at the Adelina Hotel and Suites, during the 24th Sambuokan Festival.

Pagkila, formerly dubbed as Pasidungog, was inaugurated in 2016 pursuant to Executive Order No. 33 of 2015. This initiative was spearheaded by former Vice Mayor Glenda Rabat-Gayta as part of the IKAW ANG BIDA (Barangay Integration of Development and Action) Program. Now, led by City Councilor Hon. Tara Marie Rabat-Gayta, Pagkila was revived this year after a five-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event was attended by representatives from various sectors, including the academic community of Davao Oriental State University.

City Councilor Rabat-Gayta underscored Pagkila as a component of their collaborative 'Sulat Kasaysayan' Project with the Department of Education, designed to compile historical data of the City of Mati. “One of the ways that we want to move forward with this advocacy is the ‘Sulat Kasaysayan Project’ with DepEd. They were hoping we can have a local history book, a local history of Mati that we can include in our curriculum. That’s one of the ways forward that we are thinking of doing,” she stressed.

Former city mayor in 1988, Hon. Edgardo Endriga - Lopez, one of the honorees of Pagkila 2024, recalled his experiences in the 80’s during and after the Martial Law and how it change the landscape of his political career. “Back in the 80s, it was then gubot pa kaayo. During one of the seminars I attended before, one of the speakers advised us na it’s useless na magsinggit-singgit at makibaka, get involved. So, I went into politics.”

Moreover, Hon. Carlo Luis Rabat, a Pagkila 2024 honoree who served as Mayor from 2013 to 2019, expressed his hope that the current administration would continue his vision for the city. “I hope that the development of Mati will continue but I also hope that we always be conscious sa atong environment nato. Mao na akong lagi ginasulti during my time as the Mayor. We want to retain the rural setting sa Mati para daghan gihapon tag mga trees,” he stressed. He also urged young and aspiring leaders to approach their roles with compassion and dedication, “di gyud ka magkamali if magserbisyo kay gikan sa imong kasingkasing.”

Furthermore, among the honorees of the night were the former and late Mayors of Mati including Sabino Valles (1987), Salvador Gutierrez (1987-1988), Benito G. Rabat (1992-2001), and Francisco G. Rabat (2001-2007), who were represented by the families to received their Pagkila 2024 awards.
