The Division Palaro semifinal between Fortune High School (FHS) and St. Scholastica Academy of Marikina (SSAM) was a masterclass in underdog grit.
What FHS lacked in size, they made up for in heart โ and it paid off in a thrilling two-set win, capped by a SSAM service error that settled the final score at 20โ25, 27โ26.
The opening set started rough for FHS. The SSAM came out swinging, with back-to-back power spikes and service aces that put FHS in an immediate hole, falling behind 0โ1, 0โ2, and 0โ4.
โKinakabahan pero kapit lang kasi pinaghandaan naman namin, grabe din yung pagod,โ FHS team captain Malcila Banez shared.
The pressure intensified when their go-to player suffered a sprain nearing the Division Palaro โ a blow that left the squad scrambling to adjust.
โNahihirapan kami mag-adjust dahil sa injury sa paa niya,โ coach John Orvil Monar of FHS admitted, who had prepared his team with thrice-weekly practices precisely for tough matchups like this.
The SSAM tried to capitalize with a monster block and more aces (3โ5, 3โ6, 5โ7), briefly seizing momentum. But this time, FHS held firm, turning the tide with steadier receives and sharper coordination to take the first set, 25โ20.
Behind that victory was the teamโs growing bond โ forged in months of training that transformed a once-disorganized group into a cohesive unit. โSiguro yung bond na nabuo ng team sa pag-training naminโฆ ngayong taon medyo mas handa kami doโn sa teamwork,โ Monar said.
The second set was a rollercoaster. The SSAM surged ahead first with a four-point service ace streak, threatening to close out the match early.
But FHS refused to fold. Drawing on their motto โTrust Your Teamโ, they fought back with a flurry of power spikes that extinguished SSAMโs momentum. Rallies and a well-timed FHS service ace tied the game at 9โ9, then 10โ10.
โCommunication po โyung key talaga namin โ kumapit kami, pinag-usapan namin ito, at tsini-cheer namin ang isaโt isa,โ Banez emphasized, adding that players chased down every ball, no matter how far.
In the final moments, with the score knotted at 26โ26, SSAM stepped up to serve โ and sent the ball out of bounds. The service error sealed FHSโ victory, 27โ26, and booked their spot in the NCR Palaro finals.
As FHS celebrated on the court, their win stood as proof of their teamโs core strength: unity. From overcoming injury and early mistakes to turning communication into their greatest weapon, they lived out their motto in every play.
