Due to schedule changes, we couldn't push through with the talk on mapping trails at the MFPI All Women's Climb. But we were able to validate the trail route and map a few more pieces of information on the track itself! These POIs will be uploaded on OpenStreetMap and added to our Mt. Masaraga map. Thank you, CampOne Albay for hosting the AWC!

Women-led Bahaghari Maps, together with Geoladies PH will be joining the celebrations at the MFPI All Women's Climb by giving a talk on using mobile phones to get started on mapping our hiking destinations. We had a trial trail mapathon run yesterday with the Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines Incorporated Education Committee and had tons of fun! And we hope to repeat the fun at this afternoon's mapathon. See you in a bit!

New Map Monday featuring Mt. Dialanese, Quirino! This particular map is an example of quality trail data in OpenStreetMap as generously contributed by Kiyaw Mountaineers and Schadow1 Expeditions. Trail visibility is tagged in each segment of the trail, showing us when and where the trail is easy/hard to follow, and also enabling us to use the OSM-recommended trail rendering. Points of interest along the trail were also available, such as river crossings and viewpoints. This map includes an inset map showing geographic context, i.e. where in Quirino is Mt. Dialanese – something we hadn’t included yet in the previous maps.

Pocket-sized! We made the layout pocket-sized to, uh, fit your pockets, belt bags, hiking pants back pocket, anywhere you need to stuff it in quickly. Yeah, we figured it needed shrinking when we couldn’t fit it into our own belt bag, walking back from the printers. All three maps are now 4-folded A3 maps:

PHIVOLCS raised the Mayon Volcano alert level, last Friday, to Alert Level 2 due to increasing unrest, strongly discouraging people from entering the 6km Permanent Danger Zone. How much of the Mayon trail is within the PDZ? As we can see, well, most of it. Planning a hike involves a risk assessment, which in this case is very high. So, hikers, stay safe and keep out.
