The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas has officially clarified that Apple Pay and Google Pay can launch their services without going having to register as operators of payment systems (OPS). Apple Pay and Google Pay are instead classified as technology service providers rather than payment system operators.

Both Apple Pay and Google Pay enable users to conduct financial transactions through near-field communication (NFC) technology. Users can make payments using their smartphones or smartwatches at compatible point-of-sale terminals. Financial institutions and payment service providers (PSPs) are the entities responsible for assessing and managing these technology platforms. The BSP holds PSPs accountable for any issues that may arise from integrating Apple Pay and Google Pay services.

El Salvador’s assembly approved a new law on Thursday that opens a new path for regulated financial institutions to offer crypto-related financial services. Only institutions with over $50 million in capital can become an investment bank and apply for crypto licenses, and services are limited to investors with over $250,000 in liquid assets.

Philippine’s SEC released an investor advisory warning the public against engaging with ten unregistered platforms operating without proper licenses under the agency’s new Crypto Asset Service Provider (CASP) Rules.

The crypto exchanges recently flagged by the Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), including OKX, Bybit, KuCoin, and Kraken, are now inaccessible through PLDT’s internet network. Theoretically, this allows the government to centrally manage which websites are accessible, including the ability to block platforms identified by the SEC or other authorities.

North Korean hackers have used fake IT job offers to breach cloud systems and steal millions in crypto, Google and Wiz found. The Trader Traitor campaign has evolved since 2020 to target crypto firms with malware and AI-generated lures.

The groups have stolen $1.6 billion in crypto this year and continue to scale their operations. In both cases, UNC4899 gave the employees tasks that resulted in the employees running malware on their workstations, enabling the hacking group to establish connections between its command-and-control centers and the target companies' cloud-based systems.
