Manansala takes charge as Bulldogs edge past Tigers
By Bernadette Paguirigan

Jolo Manansala took matters into his own hands, powering the NU Bulldogs to a crucial victory, taming the UST Growling Tigers with a hard-fought 67-62 win yesterday in the UAAP Season 87 Men’s Basketball Tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.

After sitting near the bottom of the standings for much of the season, the Gold and Blue team staged a fourth-quarter rally in yesterday’s game, sparking hopes for a late-season push toward the Final Four.

Trailing by eight at the start of the payoff period, the Bulldogs ignited a 17-3 run, flipping a 55-47 deficit into a solid 64-58 lead with 4:36 left in the game.

Manansala, alongside Jake Figueroa, PJ Palacielo, and Tebol Garcia, spearheaded the comeback, each player showcasing heart and hustle.

Their relentless defense forced the Tigers into five crucial turnovers down the stretch, proving the Bulldogs’ determination and intensity on both ends of the floor.

“Ang sarap sa feeling manalo ulit kasi ilang games nga simula nung first round laging close games and then sa dulo doon kami bumibitaw,” said Manansala, who led the Bulldogs with 18 points on four triples and added seven rebounds.

“Ngayon naipakita namin kung paano talaga kami maglaro kasi ganito naman din talaga kami maglaro.” His steady shooting and leadership anchored NU’s rally and set the tone for the closing minutes.

Palacielo chipped in with 15 points and six rebounds, while Figueroa, despite a slow start, found his rhythm in the second half, finishing with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists.

It was Figueroa’s five-point flurry, combined with Manansala’s clutch triple to break a 58-58 tie, that firmly put the Bulldogs ahead and completed their stunning comeback.

Head Coach Jeff Napa had words for those questioning NU’s recent success, especially following their earlier win over UP. “Kaya for your information, hindi tsamba 'yung ginawa namin. Nakadalawang sunod kami.” For Coach Napa, his team’s back-to-back victories are proof that they belong in the league.

“Nakakainis lang eh. Kasi, 'yung effort ng mga players, nababale wala eh. I-value niyo naman yung ginagawa ng mga players,” he added, defending the Bulldogs' hard-earned wins and the dedication his players have shown.

With their second straight win, NU improved to a 4-8 record, tying with FEU at sixth place and reigniting hope for a Final Four berth.
The NU Bulldogs will try to keep their momentum going as they aim for a third consecutive win against the Adamson Soaring Falcons this Sunday, 2 PM, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Patrick Yu vents ire as NU upsets UP
By John Miles Arcenal

Team captain Patrick Yu lit up the Quadricentennial Pavilion with five triples, including three in the third quarter, as part of his 17 points to help the NU Bulldogs return to the winning column with a 67-47 victory over the University of the Philippines today.

This is the Bulldogs' first win in the second round, ending their three-game losing skid and marking their first victory against the Fighting Maroons since October 2022.

"They delivered kung ano yung kailangan naming gawin and they really enjoyed kung ano yung ginagawa namin. Kaya give credit sa boys, sa mga players ko, talagang sila yung nagtrabaho," said NU head coach Jeff Napa.

NU was off to a hot start, going on a 20-4 run capped by Gelo Santiago's four-point play.

The Fighting Maroons tried to trim the lead in the second canto, but the Bulldogs continued to contain them, taking a 14-point lead into the dugout, 34-20.

National U's defense and Yu's hot shooting were pivotal in their third-quarter run to outscore the Maroons 21-11.

The Bulldogs' lead ballooned to 27 points in the final frame, and they maintained momentum until the last buzzer.

Jake Figueroa finished with 11 points, six boards, and four dimes, while PJ Palacielo and Santiago added nine and eight markers, respectively.

NU hopes to sn**ch another win, this time against the University of Santo Tomas on Wednesday, 6:30 pm at the MOA Arena.
