HISTORY

The Dawn is the official student publication of the University of the East (UE). Tracing its origins back in 1947โ€”which is a year younger than the University itself, it is considered as one of the pioneers in serving as the students' voice and in delivering reports constructed substance over form. The Business College Journal spearheaded by PCCBA Manila student Howard Dee conceived and conceptualized in 1946. Dee handled the journal as it began to publish term papers, literary works, and faculty profiles. It was an ordinary newsletter until it made a new amendment during 1950 when the Philippine College of Commerce and Business Administration was renamed the University of the East (UE). A name embodying the perseverance of night-owl writers who work and constantly beat the dawn just to publish an issue, Accountancy Vicente Mangawang gave the winning name "Dawn." The Dawn thrives as years fly by, protecting its values and integrity despite facing the most alarming chapters in the country's history. Being one of the newspapers allowed to operate during the repression of student councils and publications. During the 1970s, Dawn became the most circulated student newspaper in the Philippines. Eventually, in 1981, it joined a campaign to aid its fellow publications that were shut down in the orders of the Marcos Administration. For decades, the Dawn continues to witness the journey of the studentry and the fate of the country by producing proud journalists, public servants, and in the case of one, even a national artist. Truly, the road it follows is no exemption from rocks and hurdles. However, the footprints left behind by its predecessors remind the Dawners of their purpose to keep the dawn rising in the East. (The history of The Dawn was printed in its 70th-anniversary magazine's article entitled, "The Chronicles of The Dawn.")

READ | Malones on winning Nat'l Discipline Award: 'This is the silent strength we carry'

Honoring outstanding students nationwide, the AY Foundation, Inc. (AYF) held the 33rd National Discipline Awards themed "Turning Dreams Into Reality."

One of the awardees nationwide was University of the East (UE)-Caloocan Grade 12 student Jhon Rex Malones, studying under the academic track Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

In an interview with the DAWN, Malones shared that he sees the award as a symbol of the "silent strength we carry."

"It's not about being the loudest or most visible, but about staying true to your values even when it's difficult," he added.

Malones believes that it was his consistent commitment to service rooted in purpose that qualified him as one of the awardees.

โ€œThe programs I led, [...] were never about prestige or applauseโ€”they were born out of real needs I saw among my peers,โ€ he added.

The STEM student was known for his roles in projects that supported students struggling in mathematics and science, like "E-MAGIC" and "E-STARS," as well as a votersโ€™ education campaign that aimed to empower young voters to make informed choices.

Malones highlighted that what mattered was how he lived out the values of discipline and self-sacrifice with a mindset that quiet integrity is what makes a difference at the end.

The Grade 12 student was recommended by his fellow students and faculty members as someone who exemplified AYF's core values, which are self-sacrifice, courage, integrity, and discipline.

โ€œTo be recognized by both my teachers and peers meant a lot to me; it was a reminder that the quiet efforts I made were being seen,โ€ Malones said.

He then went on to undergo further evaluation by writing an essay and facing a panel interview.

Malones shared that he spoke honestly and from the heart about his experiences, motivations, and what discipline meant to him.

After the rigorous process, the school formally endorsed Malones as its official candidate for this year's National Discipline Award.

Together with hundreds of students nationwide, Malones was awarded at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium in Makati City on June 20.

READ | Maneja on being a Nat'l Discipline Awardee: 'This award symbolizes my time in UE'

Celebrating its 33rd year, the AY Foundation, Inc. (AYF) recognized various students nationwide by honoring them at the 2025 National Discipline Awards, with the theme โ€œTurning Dreams Into Reality.โ€

Among the awardees is Zuleica Maneja, a Grade 12 Humanities and Social Science (HUMSS) student from the University of the East (UE)-Manila.

In an exclusive interview with the DAWN, Maneja, who is also the crowned Miss UE 2025, shared that winning the award as a Warrior was incredibly fulfilling.

The awardee stated that the recognition was not only a milestone but also a reminder that staying true to your values, showing up with a heart, and giving your all can lead to something truly meaningful.

"This award will forever be a symbol of everything Iโ€™ve lived, learned, and loved throughout my time in UE,โ€ Maneja added.

When asked about what characteristics she thought was her edge in winning the award, Maneja highlighted her consistency throughout her 11 years studying at the University.

โ€œThroughout my UE journey, Iโ€™ve taken on many roles but beyond those titles, Iโ€™ve always chosen to lead with heart, integrity, and purpose,โ€ the HUMSS student said.

She underscored that discipline is not about perfection but intention and choosing to give your best even when no one is watching.

The grade 12 student was selected by the Basic Education Department (BED) as their nominee for the award after tallying the votes from her peers and the BED faculty.

She then proceeded to submit an essay and faced the BED principal and assistant principal for an interview.

After two months of waiting, Maneja received the news that she was one of the awardees through an email sent to her and the school faculty.

All nominees submitted by each school for the National Discipline Award across the Philippines were carefully screened and selected by the foundation.

Maneja was awarded on June 20 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, Makati City and was also one of the musical performers during the ceremony.

From the lively streets of Manila to the cheering festivities of Greece, the world gathers 'round to celebrate World Olympics Day, and how sportsโ€”whether watched from home or played on the front linesโ€”bring us together.

Today is the day to celebrate and bring rightful glory to the people, from athletes to organizers, who strive to unite people across different cultures but share the same love for sports.

So, just as the International Olympic Committee encourages us, 'Let's Move!' Bring a friend, a family member, or maybe even a special someone, and move to the steady beat of footsteps as we join together for this global initiative. or globally inspiring initiative.

REPPINโ€™ RED-AND-WHITE ๐Ÿ”ดโšช๏ธ

Embodying the relentless spirit of true Warriors, both current and former members of the UE fencing team proudly represented the Philippine colors in a hard-fought battle at the 2025 Asian Fencing Championships yesterday, June 23, in Bali, Indonesia.

The Warrior fencers made their presence known in the team events, spearheading the national squad to three top 10 finishes: 9th place in womenโ€™s foil through the efforts of Sophia Catantan and Wilhelmina Lozada, 9th in menโ€™s รฉpรฉe led by Lee Ergina, and 10th in womenโ€™s sabre secured by Queen Dalmacio and Jylyn Nicanor.

The Warrior blade-wielders further asserted their impact, powering the menโ€™s sabre team, headed by CA Concepcion, CJ Concepcion, and Khiane Felipe, and the menโ€™s foil team, composed of Robert Cabaero, Shawn Felipe, Nathaniel Perez, and Sammuel Tranquilan, to matching 13th-place finishes.

Former UE star Tranquilan led the way for the Philippines in the individual events, finishing 15th overall in menโ€™s foil after a stellar campaign that saw him edge Qatarโ€™s Abdalla Khalifa in a nail-biting 15โ€“14 duel to reach the Round of 16.

Other noteworthy performances came from Nicanor and Lozada, who placed 23rd in womenโ€™s sabre and 32nd in womenโ€™s foil, respectively.

From Recto to Asiaโ€™s grand stage, the Warrior fencers brought pride, power, and passion to the pisteโ€”delivering moments that reflect what it truly means to wear red.

I remember my mother, in her most vulnerable momentsโ€”when the world weighed too heavily for herโ€”would sway her hips to ABBA songs, twirling me by her side. Through the rhythm of 'Dancing Queen,' she'd transform, reclaiming the youthful spirit of her teenage dreams.

Through those disco choruses, she taught me that a song could heal wounds that no hands ever could. Sound, I learned, was more than the disruption of air particles causing different vibrations, a means of expression.

And it took me a few years of hurt and desolate loneliness to realize that in a world of differences and mixed messages, music was the only language that could break any barrierโ€” a friend that could bridge all minds and hearts.

From then on, I realized that music was more than a tool, a class or just mixed noise, but pieces of ourselvesโ€”strings of emotions and tearsโ€”intricately woven together to stir the rawest feelings we never knew we had.

Music has watched over us like guardian angels: from the stress-reducing sonatas of Beethoven while cramming for deadlines, to the medleys of 'Multo' reminding us of lingering lost love, to the soothing spurs of 'Woodstock' that reassure us we are made of stardust

So let's take this moment to dance and jive to the friend who has always spoken what we could never pry from our hearts, and say thank you for the music, for the songs we sing.

Happy World Music Day, Warriors! What's your go-to song right now? Share it in the comments! ๐ŸŽถ

Thereโ€™s a quiet magic when the sun lingers, as if time pauses to bask in June's golden light.

This isn't just the longest day of the year; itโ€™s when nature fully leans into its brightest offering, subtly urging us to do the same.

At its highest, the sun creates a glorious, luminous pauseโ€”a steady peak before the slow, graceful descent into cooler days.

So, approach this day gently: breathe in the sweet scent of summer blooms, watch the long, fading glow of evening, and feel the calm, enduring energy settling over the world.

Savour the stillness within this light, allowing its solemn clarity to fill you. Just as seasons gracefully shift, may you too bloom, bask, and begin anew.

Happy Summer Solstice, Warriors! ๐ŸŒ„

Every time I see an orange cat,
I smile like a fool, sit where it sat.
Though sometimes shy and quick to hide,
Looking aloof, but soft inside.

A charming friend I'd like to hug,
Could I sneak you inside my bag?
I'll hold you tight, no fear of scratch,
Let me tame you so we can match.

You ain't Garfield nor Puss in Boots,
But your plush still electrocutes.
Quite silly, please don't try to run,
Cold kitty, that's not really fun.

Though you're not mine to take care of,
I wish youโ€™re safe and not unloved.
I'll sit and smile just passing through,
And pet the cats when I'm missing you.

ANOTHER ONE FOR โ€˜HOME OF ACHIEVERSโ€™ ๐Ÿ†

The University of the East (UE) College of Fine Arts, Architecture and Design registered a 100% passing rate in the Special Licensure Exam (SPLE) for Architects held in the Middle East and Singapore after the lone Warrior taker successfully passed said exam.

John Mark Christian Cortez was one of the 78 passers out of 158 examinees from the country, tallying a national passing rate of 49.37 percent.

Meanwhile, in the Architect Licensure Exam (ALE) in the Philippines, CFAD produced nine new architects and recorded an overall passing rate of 64.29 percent.

According to the results released by the Professional Regulation Commission, eight out of the nine passers were first time takers.

A warm embrace, an encouraging whisper.

Momentaryโ€”the memory is already lost.

Yet the warmth remains within.

The small sparks of the past, wonder not of what they may cause.

To die out and be forgotten, or to be nurtured into a roaring blaze of passion.

If the soul should burn bright, it needs passion, the engine of dreams, strong enough to illuminate light on its own.

So go tend the flames.

Look back and rememberโ€”each piece adds to the inferno.

The small progress, the big dreams, the gentle hand on your back telling you, โ€œDon't lose that fire within!โ€
