Holidays are vital in our culture as we commemorate each critical day in our history. However, does the number of holidays we have affect our country's competitiveness when it comes to different work fields? Reducing the holidays may have a significant impact on our economy, although it will also have a negative effect on our culture as Filipino citizens.

On August 7, 2024, Senate President Chiz Escudero said at a conference that the Committee should study and consider combining certain holidays. According to The Philippine Star (2024), Escudero stated that the number of holidays in our country has already reached a month, which he claimed makes Philippine companies and workers less competitive.

“𝘒𝘢𝘱𝘢𝘨 𝘯𝘰𝘯-𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘺, 𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘱𝘢𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘥𝘰 𝘬𝘢, 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘰 𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘪𝘺𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘢 𝘳𝘰𝘯,” said Senator Cynthia Villar, who also supports Escudero regarding his claim. Villar also stated that workers should celebrate the holiday in a much better way while still having to work.

Reducing the number of holidays will not have a significant impact on our economy. Even though most Filipino workers nowadays are overworked, they're also underpaid. According to the Department of Labor and Employment or DOLE (2024), the rate of underpaid Filipino workers has reached 6.8% as of June 2024—which is lower than last year but is still concerning. Instead of having the chance or a day to rest and spend time with their families, this bill can drain Filipinos from different work fields.

As Senator Cynthia Villar pointed out, extending the workweek could positively impact the country’s economic growth, as it would encourage workers to contribute more days of labor. While this idea may seem like a potential solution to boost the economy, it also poses a risk to the cultural celebrations integral to Filipino life. Workers, especially those from different provinces, might be unable to celebrate key holidays with their families due to extended work hours, which could undermine the importance of these cultural traditions.

To improve the country’s economy effectively, the government should prioritize increasing wages and the minimum salary for Filipino workers. Additionally, the government must explore ways to enhance productivity without compromising workers' well-being, avoiding the sacrifice of rest days or the burden of overwork.

This situation also serves as a reminder for future Filipino voters to elect leaders who understand our people's diverse needs and challenges. In the upcoming Senate election, it is essential to choose lawmakers who will advocate for policies that consider the livelihoods and rights of all Filipinos. Let us vote for leaders who will listen to the concerns of the marginalized and ensure that economic progress benefits everyone without sidelining the rich cultural heritage that defines our nation.

To raise awareness about the harmful effects of cyberbullying, the Student Council of 𝗔𝗣𝗘𝗖 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗿 conducted an outreach program at BNHS - Gawaran on 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟮, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰. The team visited each classroom of Grade 10 students, delivering an informative and engaging presentation on the topic of cyberbullying.

𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝟭𝟭 & 𝟭𝟮 embarked on a trip to 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽 in 𝗧𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗮, 𝗥𝗶𝘇𝗮𝗹 on 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟲, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰! 🌳 𝗔𝗣𝗘𝗖 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗿 was awarded 𝟯𝗿𝗱 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 as students pushed their limits, both physically and mentally, conquering challenging team-building activities that ignited their leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. 💪🥉

𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝟳 & 𝟴 had a blast on 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟰, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰! On their exciting field trip, students journeyed through time at 𝗣𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗵𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲 and 𝗘𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘂𝗺 while having a glimpse into the country's history and rich heritage. 🏛 To round off the day, the students experienced exciting rides, interactive games, and captivating shows at 𝗘𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗱𝗼𝗺. 🎡
