What is melasma? Why do women get melasma more than men?
Melasma is a skin condition caused by changes in the amount of plasma in the body and reduces the amount of plasma. According to studies, women get melasma more than men because of the following main reasons:
1️⃣ Hormonal changes Women have many hormonal changes from puberty to menopause. This change directly affects two hormones in the body: estrogen and progesterone. These hormones affect the production of melanin - the pigment that gives color to the skin. When melanin increases, the skin will have a darker color and melasma will appear.
2️⃣ Collagen loss Collagen is a type of protein that helps connect tissues in the body. Collagen plays an important role in maintaining the elasticity and firmness of the skin. Over time, collagen will decrease due to age or other factors. Women have less collagen than men. When collagen decreases, the skin will sag and wrinkles will appear. This also makes the skin more vulnerable and prone to melasma.
3️⃣ Makeup According to experts, women have different makeup habits than men. Women often use products that contain high levels of antioxidants such as sunscreen, moisturizer, powder… These products can irritate the skin and cause oxidation. When the skin is oxidized, melanin will be activated and cause melasma.
4️⃣ Psychology Women often face many pressures in life such as work, family, children… These pressures can cause stress and anxiety for women. This psychology also affects the balance of hormones in the body and causes melasma.
5️⃣ Using products of unknown origin Some women have a habit of using products of unknown origin or not suitable for their skin type. These products may contain harmful ingredients for the skin such as corticoid, lead, mercury… These substances can cause side effects for the skin such as irritation, inflammation, allergy… and make the skin unbalanced and develop melasma.
Therefore, women should choose carefully the products for their skin and read carefully the information on the product label.
