PRESS RELEASE
AUGUST 8, 2024

*PPA’s GREEN LEGACY: 12.3M TREES PLANTED ACROSS THE PHILIPPINES*

More than 12 million trees and mangroves have already been planted by the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) as its contribution to the climate change issues and to strengthen its tree-planting initiatives in compliance with the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. on integrating reforestation with disaster mitigation projects.

From 2020 to July 2024, PPA planted a total of of 12,259,894 trees as reported by its Port Management Offices based on certifications issued by the DENR. The PMO Surigao led the PMOs with the highest number of trees planted, totaling 4,888,277 trees. It was followed by PMO SOCSARGEN (1,385,369); PMO Agusan (1,182,289); PMO Zamboanga del Norte (1,034,019); and PMO Masbate (580,000).

Reaffirming its commitment to environmental stewardship, the PPA enforces mandatory tree and mangrove planting for all contracts, accreditations, and permits issued. Administrative Order 14-2020 mandates the planting of trees or mangroves as a prerequisite for issuing accreditations, certificates of registration (COR), appointments, or for the award, renewal, or extension of contracts. This policy aligns with Executive Order No. 26, which established the National Greening Program, and Republic Act No. 9729, known as The Climate Change Act of 2009.

This means before obtaining a PPA accreditation certificate, certificate of registration (COR), permit to operate (PTO), or any appointment and service contracts related to port operations, the applicant or grantee is required to plant a minimum of one thousand (1,000) tree or mangrove seedlings.

According to PPA General Manager Jay Santiago, tree planting initiatives of PPA aims to combat climate change and environmental concerns that continue to affect human lives.

"In response to the call of our President BBM to conduct tree planting activities, the organization will further intensify its tree planting initiatives under PPA Administrative Order 14-2020. The entire PPA is glad that we are with the same vision as our President in terms of reforestation and environmental protection," said GM Santiago.

PPA is in partnership with various Community Environment and Natural Resources Offices (CENRO), planting 3,000 mangroves and seedlings in Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, Zamboanga, Agusan, Bicol, and Negros Oriental.

Santiago added that this is one of PPA's humble contributions to nature amid the ongoing effects of climate change happening across the world. Last week, heavy rains resulted to the flooding of Metro Manila and nearby cities, resulting to the suspension of work and classes due and a state of calamity affecting more or less 13 million people. # # #

PHILIPPINES RECOGNIZED GLOBALLY FOR EXCELLENCE IN CRUISE TOURISM FOR BEST PORT CALL

Driven by the continuous development and the enhancement of port infrastructures nationwide, the Philippines has once again proven its status as a top-tier cruise destination as it won the "Best Port Call of 2024" in the 10th Asia Cruise Awards in Jeju Island South Korea on July 10, 2024.

Under the stewardship of PPA, several ports across the Philippines have been equipped to accommodate cruise vessels, including Currimao in Ilocos Norte, Salomague in Ilocos Sur, Manila, Bohol, and El Nido in Palawan. In a bid to further provide safer and more convenient maritime transportation experience to tourists aboard cruise vessels, PPA has initiated and continuously conducts improvements of its port facilities including the construction of dedicated ports for cruise tourism. PPA has established more cruise terminals in the tourist destinations, including Siargao, Camiguin, Boracay, Palawan, and Puerto Galera. In 2023, the Philippines welcomed over 87,000 cruise passengers. It is anticipated that this number will exceed 103,000 in 2024, reflecting a growing trend in cruise ship visits to the country.

This commitment to excellence has been recognized on the global stage, with the Philippines receiving prestigious awards such as "Best Cruise Destination in Asia 2023" from the latest World Cruise awards. This strategic investment not only caters to the increasing number of international cruise liners but also enhances the overall travel experience for tourists. The expansion and modernization of ports are pivotal in positioning the Philippines as a premier cruise destination in Southeast Asia.

On 25 September 2023 during the celebration of World Tourism Day, PPA launched its campaign to better promote the country’s well-known tourist destinations that can be reached via ports under the jurisdiction of the agency, promoting delicious food, places to visit, and activities to experience in tourist sites accessible via seaports.

With the continues port development and infrastructure improvements of PPA, the Philippines is set to attract an even greater influx of cruise tourists, contributing significantly to its tourism sector and overall economic development.
