UPCM InSPIRE Magazine The UPCM InSPIRE magazine, formerly known as the UPCM Newsletter, is the official magazine of the University of the Philippines College of Medicine (UPCM).

As the official publication of the University of the Philippines College of Medicine (UPCM) community, the magazine aims to create a sense of community among various constituents of the UPCM faculty, students, alumni, and administrative staff. This community magazine's namesake came from Dean Charlotte M. Chiong's strategic vision of the UPCM as discussed in detail in her inaugural speech in Septe

mber 2018. Through this publication, the editorial team aims to share the progress of the many projects and endeavors that the college has initiated in pursuit of this goal.

"The reason why individuals enter medical education is to serve the country and be of national service. Thus, medical education should incorporate the key priorities of the Department of Health. In the era of Universal Healthcare, population-based and individual-based services should be key components of medical education."

"Inasmuch as hierarchy remains to have purpose, the changing landscape of society today presents opportunities where improvements can be made, in order to ensure that hierarchies are actually accomplishing their purpose. This is not to say that all forms of stability should be removed; rather, it’s a call towards alleviating the unintended consequences of hierarchy, and ensuring its effectiveness is maximized."

"Now in its 50th year, the UP MSS – emboldened by its four core values of camaraderie, openness, well-roundedness, and service – continues to uphold the same ideas those young men and women back in 1973 believed in: that a doctor is still every bit a human being, both fallible and noble, and his humanity must be nurtured all allowed to grow, just as he strives to be perfect in the science of his profession."

“Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the field of medicine in unprecedented ways. From diagnosis and treatment to research and education, AI has the potential to enhance the quality, efficiency, and accessibility of healthcare. However, AI also poses significant challenges and risks for medical educators, who need to prepare future physicians and health professionals for the ethical, legal, and social implications of working with intelligent machines.”

[UPCM InSPIRE Magazine]
This is the ultimate task as we get back to this transformed world, we hope our existence has become more meaningful, our work-life balance better, our wellness within reach. Let us not allow this cataclysm go to waste. It has, after all, touched all of us. We fervently hope that to paraphrase the words of the witches in the musical 'Wicked' written by Stephen Schwartz- we have been changed for good."

"... Physicians should be able to redefine their engagement as professionals [through] social accountability and advocacy to ensure equitable health systems... Those of us in the academe should support this initiative. Moreover, those of us in the clinics should model this role. In doing so, we uphold the words of Virchow: 'Politics is medicine on a larger scale.' It is time to embody this kind of medicine."
