Just a little while ago, I went to a shop to buy something, and while I was at the cashier's counter, there was this ate, probably a mother, paying for school supplies. She was carefully trying to budget her money for the items she needed, but her total bill came to 676 pesos. She asked the cashier to make it fit within her 600-peso budget, so the cashier removed some items. However, the total was still higher than her cash.
Seeing her predicament, I offered to cover the remaining amount, and she hesitantly accepted my offer. I also insisted on paying for the items she had asked the cashier to remove earlier but she’s shy and doesn’t want to. As I proceeded to pay for my own items, the lady returned and gently tapped me on the shoulder, placing a box of chocolates beside me as a token of gratitude while saying “pasasalamat ma’am”. I initially hesitated to accept it because it was not my intention to give just to receive something back. Unfortunately, she left hurriedly, and I couldn't return the chocolates to her.
I couldn't help but feel a twinge of guilt, as the box of chocolates seemed more valuable than what I had contributed which was only 22 pesos. I couldn't help but wonder if those chocolates were meant for her children. How could I take it knowing that she might have been struggling financially and yet was willing to share what little she had.
Despite this internal conflict, I found solace in the kindness of the lady. Her act of giving, even when she had limited resources, touched my heart deeply. It served as a poignant reminder that those with less are often more grateful than those with more. Many of us frequently desire more, even when we have enough, and we sometimes forget to be thankful for what we already possess. However, this lady, despite her budget constraints, generously shared what little she had.
May God bless you abundantly, ate. I hope to see you again…
