LIGHT GAME 101 - AJING, MEBARING, LRF or LIGHT GAME.
Ajing – A fishing style that originated in Japan for catching Aji fish (Horse Mackerel) and, in other parts of the world, has evolved into fishing for mini pelagic fish such as scads, trevallies, barracudas, herrings, shad, anchovies, and similar mini pelagic species. It uses ultralight rods, ultralight fishing reels, light lines, light jig heads, light plugs, or soft plastics as common fishing tackle.

Mebaring – A fishing style that originated in Japan for catching Mebaru (rockfish). Rockfish are demersal fish, meaning they live and feed near the bottom of seas or lakes. Examples of demersal fish include catfish, groupers, snappers, breams, flathead fish, seaperches, and similar species. A similar ultralight tackle, like that used in Ajing, can be used to catch these fish. However, the Japanese have introduced a separate Mebaring rod specifically designed for this type of fishing.

Light Game/Light Saltwater game/Light Salt Game/Light Rock Fishing/ Light Tackle Fishing – A fishing terms used by anglers to describe the style of fishing they used. These are catching a variety of fish species using light tackles(Rods,Reels,Iine,jigheads,Softplastic). Similar to Japanese Ajing and Mebaring types of fishing.

LIGHT GAME 101 – JAPANESE AJING RODS, MEBARING RODS and LIGHT GAME RODS,

Disclaimer: Based on what I have read, my understanding, and the opinions of some Ajinistas I have consulted.

Most Japanese rods designed for light game fishing are typically Ajing-tuned and Mebaring-tuned rods. These may be considered XUL/UL rods by some due to their similarities in lure capacity, but their build and sensitivity differ significantly from most XUL or UL rods. It’s important to remember that Ajing and Mebaring fishing originated in Japan, so it’s safe to say that the Japanese know what works best for this style of fishing.

Let’s take the Majorcraft Aji Do 5G Ajing rod as an example. These Ajing rods have power ratings ranging from Ultralight (0.2 to 2.5g), Light (0.2 to 3g), Medium (0.6 to 5g), and Heavy (0.6 to 15g). The Aji Do 5G also features a special FC power Ajing rod, designed for FLOAT and CARO lures, with a capacity of 2 to 24g.

It’s important to note that Majorcraft Aji Do 5G rods are not considered very expensive light game rods by some, as there are more expensive Japanese light game rods available. Japanese rods tend to be more expensive compared to other regular rod manufacturers due to the materials used and the extensive research invested in their development.

Additionally, there are dedicated rods for Mebaru fishing (Mebaring). Japanese manufacturers of light game rods differ in how they develop their rods, so they may have varying capacities. Some manufacturers will not identify their rods as Ajing rods or Mebaring rods but rather as light game rods.

Some light game rods are suitable for both Ajing and Mebaring fishing styles.

I’ve tried both Indonesian XUL rods and Ajing rods, as well as Malaysian Ajing rods (specifically branded for Ajing). Last year, I received my first Japanese Ajing rod (June 2024- Thanks to my Indonesian ajinista friend), a Chinese light game rod (October 2024), and another Japanese Ajing rod (December 2024). Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to field-test them due to a hand injury in November, but I’m looking forward to the SCAD season this summer.

I’ve consulted with some Ajing enthusiasts who have experience using multiple light game rods to help me find my ideal Japanese Ajing rod that suits my budget. Always remember, those who have used a variety of Ajing rods can provide the best insights, as they can compare different models, whether they are UL, XUL rods or Ajing-tuned rods.

But at the end of the day, try to enjoy what you have—UL,XUL,Ajing rod,Mebaring rod , whether it’s Chinese, Indonesian, Malaysian, or another manufacturer’s brand of rods. And maybe, in the future, if you have the means to purchase a Japanese light game rod (Ajing or Mebaring), make sure to research what’s best for your budget first.
