India confirms first two cases of human metapneumovirus

Two human metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases have been detected in Bengaluru, India’s Health Ministry confirmed today. The first reported cases are an eight-month-old who is recovering in the hospital and a three-month-old who has been discharged.
Recent reports of an outbreak of HMPV in China have raised alarm globally. However, India's Ministry of Health said the situation in China is not unusual given the ongoing flu season. Currently, strict isolation protocols and universal precautions for suspected cases have been made mandatory in the country.
, first identified in 2001, is a respiratory infection that causes flu-like symptoms. It can affect people of all ages, however, young children (below 5 years), older adults, and those with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk.
