Is it Modernization or Oppression?

By Christine Jeanel L. Santos, Ron Jay M. Vedua

The Torres Torch interviewed 5 jeepney drivers and asked them two frequent questions about the jeepney phaseout. Here are the responses and perspectives of our jeepney drivers on the implementation.
"Paano naapektuhan ng jeepney phaseout ang iyong kabuhayan at pang-araw-araw na operasyon bilang driver?"
"Ano ang pakiramdam mo tungkol sa mga plano ng gobyerno para sa modernisasyon ng jeepney, at anong mga hamon ang inaasahan mong kaharapin bilang isang tsuper sa panahong ito?"

In summary, the transition
away from traditional jeepneys is a multifaceted process with both advantages and challenges for transportation. Countries like the Philippines, contemplating a shift to modernized alternatives, must consider various factors influencing this change. While traditional jeepneys offer a potential solution to environmental issues and the well-being of Filipino, modernization enhances fuel efficiency, reduces operating costs, and promotes resource conservation. However, the implementation poses challenges for small-scale operators, potentially leading to industry consolidation and job losses. Upgraded transit may also increase costs for passengers, impacting affordability and accessibility.

A comprehensive strategy is crucial, balancing modernization goals with the concerns of all stakeholders, to create a sustainable and efficient future for public transportation.

REMEMBERING DR. JOSE RIZAL 🇵🇭
By Vrenth Ashley Batang

On this 127th Rizal Day, our nation solemnly remembers the sacrifice of Jose Rizal, acknowledges his profound contributions as a timeless wellspring of inspiration. Through his literary works, he played a pivotal role in securing the Philippines' independence from Spanish colonial rule. Following Andrés Bonifacio's Grito de Balintawak in 1896, Rizal was arrested and charged with sedition, ultimately facing a firing squad in Bagumbayan, now Luneta, Manila, on December 30, 1896.

This date, now designated as Rizal Day, holds distinctive significance in Philippine history. It is a day dedicated to honor Dr. Jose Rizal, a polymath and national hero, prompting contemplation on his extraordinary life and contributions. Rizal's courage in championing convictions for our nation's liberation imparts valuable lessons on knowledge, patriotism, and the pursuit of justice.

As we commemorate Rizal Day, let us collectively celebrate by respectfully honoring his enduring legacy and actively striving for the improvement of our nation.

Florentino Torres High School conducted the "Pasiklaban" a festival of talents last December 12, 2023, showing various talents of the Torresians as they continue igniting the fire at the FTHS quadrangle.

The event began with a prayer led by Euri M. Javier, together with the FTHS String Ensemble as they played different instruments with some energetic tunes that captivated the audience.

The principal, Ma'am Ma. Pura S. Talattad took over the stage with her speech and gave the audience information about the ongoing event. She added to her statement that the program might be her last one at Torres High as her retirement is fast approaching.

Another special performance was executed by FTHS Dance Troupe with their intermission dance number followed by the FTHS String Ensemble.

The roleplayers' renditions of sequences from well-known plays and musicals, including Florante at Laura, Noli Me Tangere, Ibong Adarna, El Filibusterismo, and New Yorker in Tondo were the program's high point.

The whole performance of the stage plays pleased and astounded the Torresians. Throughout the event, they showed their support and screamed, creating an exciting atmosphere that left everyone who was a part of it unforgettable.

Janine Purqued, a performer said "Nothing beats the love and support of the Torresians. The stage was fun, it helped me to build up my strength and release my fear in performing front of a crowd. Everything was fun and I'm so proud of us Torresians."

Mr. Yag-at, Grade 10 Curriculum Chairman and Science department head, ended the event with his words of gratitude and announced the events that will be held in the following remaining days.

FTHS Supreme Secondary Learner Government Officers, FTHS Coordinating Council, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and teachers, all worked together to organize and manage the event.

Despite the crowded event, the organizers managed to keep everything under control making the program a grand success.

Chloe Amber M. Roque and Faye Diane S. Maravilla served as the master of the program.

by Euri M. Javier

IT'S PARTY DAY! Florentino Torres High School students celebrated its Christmas Party on Dec. 14, 2023. Torresians were given time to perform the event in their respective classes and continue to acknowledge the annual festivity of the year.

As students entered the school, they are welcomed by the students who shined with their unkabogable (OOTD) Outfit of the Day.

Various ways were planned in each corner of the school to celebrate the special day of the year. Different games and decorations happened during the day of the party as well as exchanging of gifts.

Photobooths, Face Painting, and raffle occur at the FTHS Oval from 10a.m. onwards to those students who are a part of the McDonald's Party.

35 students from Grade 7 and 10 were luckily chosen in the morning raffle, and 35 students were selected in Grade 8 and 9 during the afternoon raffle. The winners received various prizes, most are appliances in home and different school supplies.

Torresians who participated in the Photobooths will be receiving a hard copy on their own. A soft copy of those pictures can also be seen through the page of `Bliss Moments Photobooth`.

For several individuals, this is the most delightful season of the year. "Christmas cheer" is the term used frequently by everyone who think this Christmas Party is actually the best time of year to be cheerful. It's the happiness, coziness, and nostalgia that people experience as the season started to make its way to let the students feel the presence of Christmas.

𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐨 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑

Today, November 27, 2023, we are celebrating the birth anniversary of Andres Bonifacio, a revered revolutionary leader and national hero, with the theme "Bonifacio 2023: Duty and Responsibility toward the Nation’s Progress."

May the memory of this great hero—Gat Andres Bonifacio, a pivotal role in the Philippine Revolution—serve as inspiration for us to be brave, tenacious, and unified in our pursuit of an equitable and just society. Let us never forget the sacrifices made by our heroes and work to fulfill their dreams.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. shifted the Regular Holiday, commonly known as Bonifacio Day, to November 27, 2023 (Monday), as a non-working holiday, and November 30, as a regular working day, in compliance with Proclamation 90.

As we celebrate the birth anniversary of The Father of the Philippine Revolution, may his legacy teach us freedom, harmony, and patriotism for the rest of our lives in showing the nationalism pride within our hearts.

NEWS: FTHS AGHAMazing Month, wrapped up!

by Christine Jeanel L. Santos

The Science department conducted the Science Month closing program last Monday, October 9, 2023, at the Social Hall of Florentino Torres High School with the theme "SIYENSYA, TEKNOLOHIYA AT INOBASYON: SA MATATAG, MAGINHAWA AT PANATAG NA KINABUKASAN”.

A lot of contestants have incorporated the theme throughout their works such as posters, slogans and especially their own version of TUGSAYAWIT (Tugtog, Sayaw at Awit) with their dazzling and eco friendly costumes! The social hall had been filled with a lot of flying colors and anticipation as they excitedly wait for their own names to be called and be awarded with a certificate, medals and a picture they will cherish forever!

"Makagraduate lang ako sinta walang humpay na ligaya, aasahan maging scientists. Sa tanghali, sa gabi, at umaga. " one of the lyrics from the songs of the winners for the TUGSAYAWIT as a motivation for students like us to graduate and be a scientist that formulates its own chemicals through creating a good element and betterment of each other.

Moreover, the event was a chance for the students to learn from one another. The different presentations and performances showed the diversity of ideas and perspectives within the school community. It was inspiring to see how the students were able to use their talents and skills in promoting a common goal - to make a positive impact on the world through the advancement of science.

As the event drew to a close, the students left the Social Hall with a sense of pride and accomplishment. They had not only demonstrated their knowledge and skills in science, but had also shown that they were capable of working together towards a common goal. The Science Month may have ended, but the memories and lessons learned will stay with the students for a lifetime.
