In 1985, David “Boyzie” Zamar was in his second year with the UE Red Warriors. At 19 years old, Zamar, a native of Iloilo City, was the sixth child in a family of seven, born to Rev. Antolin Zamar and Juliet Doyre. His father served as a minister at the Doane Baptist Protestant Church.

Zamar's basketball journey began at Central Philippine University (CPU), where he played for two years at the junior level, contributing to the team's triumph as national inter-secondary champions in 1982. Post high school, he moved to Manila, aiming to join the collegiate basketball scene. His efforts paid off in 1984, during UAAP Season 47, when he secured a spot on the senior team of the Red Warriors.

In his debut season with UE, Zamar, under the guidance of former Olympian and coach Jimmy Mariano, joined a strong team led by future Asian Champions and PBA stars Allan Caidic and Jerry Codiñera. This powerful combination led the team to a UAAP championship in his first season. The success continued into the following season, in 1985, where the Warriors clinched their 18th title and achieved a back-to-back championship in Season 48.

During this second season, Zamar's role evolved significantly. Now in the starting lineup, he transitioned from a forward to an off guard position, a move that proved beneficial as it resulted in increased playing time. Zamar, a Business Administration student, expressed satisfaction with this development, finding the change in position advantageous to his playing career.

Zamar is now a coach with multiple championships to his name in both domestic and international competitions. He is currently serving as an assistant coach for the San Miguel Beermen in the PBA.
