The Feast of the Sto. Niño is a religious celebration unique to the Philippines. The Spanish title “Sto. Niño” means “Holy Child”. Filipinos have a strong devotion to the Holy Child as can be seen through the presence of the Sto. Niño’s image everywhere—from houses to offices and from shops to jeepneys. This devotion is as old as Christianity itself in the Philippines. Colorful festivals such as the Sinulog in Cebu tell the story of the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines and the acceptance of the faith by the locals.

Upon Magellan’s death at the Battle of Mactan, the image disappeared and was only rediscovered in 1565 by men of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi. However, historians believe that between Magellan’s death and Legazpi’s arrival, the natives continued to honor the Child Jesus through a previously pagan dance ritual called the “Sinulog”. The image now resides in the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebu—the oldest Church in the Philippines—which is said to have been built on the site where the image was found. A feast dedicated to the finding of the Child Jesus was then established on April 28, 1565.

Today, the feast day is celebrated every third Sunday of January (or the second Sunday after the Solemnity of the Epiphany). Cries of “Viva Señor Santo Niño” and “Viva Pit Señor” ring across the country as towns and cities celebrate the feast day.
“Viva” is a similar expression to “hail” and literally means “to live”. It is used as a cheer and a way to honor the Lord Jesus. “Señor” is the Spanish word for “Lord”. The title is given in honor to the Child Jesus as an acknowledgment of his Godhood and authority over all.

𝑺𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒕 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒈𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝑯𝒖𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒓𝒚, 𝑽𝒊𝒓𝒈𝒊𝒏

St. Margaret was born in Hungary, and was the eighth daughter of ten children to the Ruler of Croatia. Her parents were a royal couple that ruled the land. Her parents vowed that if Hungary were liberated from the Mongols, they would dedicate a child to Religion. Her parents entrusted the four-year-old Margaret to the Dominican Monastery at Veszprem in 1245. Six years later she was transferred to the Monastery of the Blessed Virgin founded by her parents on Rabbit Island, near Buda – today called Margaret Island. The rest of life was spent there dedicating her life to her religion. She opposed all attempts of her father to arrange a political marriage with King Ottokar II of Bohemia.

Margaret chastised herself from early childhood, wore an iron girdle, hair shirts, and shoes spiked with nails to create pain and suffering to offer up. She later also performed the dirtiest tasks in the Monastery. She died on January 18th, 1271 at the age of twenty-eight. Her death is believed to have been caused by fatigue brought on by her extreme fasting and endless hours in prayer. Seventy-four miracles were ascribed through her intercession, most of them referring to curing illness, even someone coming back from the dead. Pope Pius XII did not canonize her until 1943. Her aunt was St. Elizabeth of Hungary. Even though it took centuries for her to be canonized, she was venerated as a saint shortly after her death.

𝑴𝒆𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝒐𝒇 𝑺𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒕 𝑨𝒏𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒏𝒚, 𝑨𝒃𝒃𝒐𝒕

Anthony "the Great", the "Father of Monks", ranks with those saints whose life exercised a profound influence upon succeeding generations. He was born in Middle Egypt of distinguished parents. After their untimely deaths, he dedicated himself wholly to acts of mortification.

One day while in church he heard the words of the Gospel: "If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have, and give it to the poor" (Matt. 19:21). Without delay he sold his property, gave the proceeds to the poor, and went into the desert. When overcome by fatigue, his bed was the hard ground. He fasted rigorously, ate only bread and salt, and drank only water. Nor would he take food before sundown; at times he passed two days without any nourishment. Often, he spent whole nights in prayer.

The saint suffered repeatedly from diabolical attacks, but these merely made him more steadfast in virtue. He would encourage his disciples in their struggle with the devil with such words: "Believe me; the devil fears the vigils of pious souls, and their fastings, their voluntary poverty, their loving compassion, their humility, but most of all their ardent love of Christ our Lord. As soon as he sees the sign of the Cross, he flees in terror." He died in 356 on Mount Kolzin by the Red Sea. A year later his friend, the fearless bishop and confessor St. Athanasius, wrote his biography, which for centuries became the classic handbook of ascetics. As seen by St. Anthony, the purpose of asceticism is not to destroy the body but to bring it into subjection, re-establishing man's original harmonious integrity, his true God-given nature.

𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗: 𝗔𝗡𝗡𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗖𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧
Starting February 5, 2024, the Morning Prayers will be recited as a whole and no longer combined with the Holy Eucharist. This decision aims to preserve the distinctiveness and solemnity of both the Morning Prayers and the Mass, allowing each to be celebrated with the focus and reverence they deserve. Hence the sequence: Angelus, Rosary, Morning Prayer and Holy Eucharist.

St. Francis Fernandez de Capillas was born on the 15th August 1607 in Spain. He was ordained priest in Manila in 1632. Animated by an apostolic zeal in 1642, from the Philippines he went to China where he suffered persecution at the hands of the Tartars and then was beheaded in the village of Fogan in 1648. He was declared blessed by St Pius X in 1909. The other Dominican martyrs were beatified by Pope Leo XIII on the 14th May 1893.

Francis Serrano Frias from Granada born in 1695 proceeded to China in 1738. He was caught and imprisoned in 1746. He was strangled and his body burned in 1748. He was known for his devotion to the Rosary and missionary zeal. Then, there were John Alcobar Figuera who went to China in 1741, was caught and hanged in 1748; Joachim Rogo Perez (1691-1748) went to China in 1715, caught and strangled in 1736 and Francis Diaz of Ricon (1713-1748) who was known for his piety and self-denial, was captured in 1746, and hanged 2 years later.

On the 1st October 2000, St. John Paul II canonized these 6 Spanish Dominican Saints among 120 martyrs killed in China.

Our Story

Brief Historical Background Manaoag Dominican Radio is a Non-Commercial Community Catholic Radio Station of Manaoag Dominican Broadcasting Incorporated and the media arm of the Dominican Community of Manaoag for evangelizing the Good News. It was a project initiated on June 29, 2008 by Fr. Gallardo “Butch”Bombase, Jr. O.P. as his gift to the Blessed Virgin Mary of Manaoag on the occasion of his 24th priestly anniversary.
