A Filipino police colonel was among those who died in the Washington air collision, according to Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla.

Remulla told GMA News Online that the Filipino fatality is a member of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

PNP Spokesperson Lt. Col. Randulf Tuaño in a press conference identified the victim as PNP Chief of Supply Management Division PCol. Pergentino Malabed, Jr. who was on official travel for a pre-delivery inspection of 2,675 units of all-purpose vests.

DSWD PRESS RELEASE: DSWD, other gov’t agencies to provide job opportunities for 12K members of 4Ps

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), in collaboration with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and other government agencies, is set to provide job opportunities to 12,000 graduating members of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) during the roll-out of the ‘Trabaho sa Bagong Pilipinas’ on Friday (January 31).

The one-stop-shop job fair kicks off at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila at 10 am and will last until 5 pm. Upon registration, the 4Ps beneficiaries from the National Capital Region (NCR) will undergo an orientation on the services offered by the participating government agencies.

Jet vs Helicopter Midair Collision Near Washington, D.C.: Key Details

Incident Overview

An American Eagle passenger jet and a Black Hawk helicopter collided in midair Wednesday night near Reagan National Airport.

Both aircraft crashed into the Potomac River.

No survivors were found, confirmed by President Trump on Thursday.

Many victims have yet to be identified.

Aircraft Details

American Eagle Flight No. 5342 (operated by PSA Airlines):

Regional jet with 60 passengers and 4 crew members.

Departed from Wichita, Kansas.

Broke into multiple pieces in shallow water (5-8 feet deep).

Black boxes (flight data and cockpit voice recorders) recovered for analysis.

Sikorsky H-60 Black Hawk Helicopter (U.S. Army):

Carried 3 soldiers.

Part of B Company, 12th Aviation Battalion based in Fort Belvoir, Virginia.

On a training flight when the crash occurred.

Landed upside down but mostly intact.

Crash Timeline & Investigation

Collision occurred around 9 p.m. Wednesday while the plane was preparing to land.

A livestream camera from the Kennedy Center captured an explosion over the Potomac River at 8:47 p.m.

Human remains and debris were found along the Virginia side of the river.

Divers accessed the aircraft cabin and recovered luggage.

The operation transitioned from rescue to recovery, as confirmed by emergency officials.

10-Year-Old Kid From Oriental Mindoro Filipino Triumphs at International Science Olympiad

Houston, Texas – In a remarkable display of talent, 10-year-old John Hermes Mariñas from Oriental Mindoro, Philippines, clinched a gold medal in the Natural Science Category 2 at the 6th Copernicus International Science Olympiad held from January 5 to 10, 2025. As the youngest member of Team Philippines, John not only secured the top spot but also achieved third place in his category, underscoring his exceptional scientific acumen.

A Stellar Performance by Team Philippines

The Philippine delegation showcased outstanding prowess, securing a total of six medals across various categories:

Rjian Felminia Acevedo, 16, from the Philippine Science High School - Zamboanga Peninsula Region Campus, earned a gold medal in Natural Science Category 4.

Iwen Sabio Manaba, 17, from the School of Saint Anthony in Quezon City, garnered a silver medal in Natural Science Category 5.

Richmarth Duke Bad-ang, 17, of the University of Immaculate Conception in Davao City, secured a bronze medal in Natural Science Category 5.

Land Transportation Office (LTO) Chief, Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor D. Mendoza II wants to make the presence of the agency’s enforcers felt on the Marilaque Road in Rizal following the multiple cases of accidents involving motorcycles, the recent was the viral video of two motorcycle crashes that left one vlogger dead.

On Monday, January 27, Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) director Police Brig. Gen. Eleazar Matta paid a visit to Asec Mendoza and the two officials discussed ways to strengthen the cooperation and coordination to ensure road safety.

One of the matters discussed was the incident on Marilaque Road and the two officials agreed to boost the LTO and PNP presence in the area to compel motorcycle riders to behave.

Asec Mendoza said he already instructed LTO-Calabarzon Regional Director Elmer Decena to coordinate with the local police forces and the local government units (LGUs) to prevent the Marilaque Road from being turned into a motorcycle exhibition area for motorcycle riders.

“We have to put a stop to this practice because it endangers the lives of not only the motorcycle riders but also the other road users passing in the area. In the most recent case, may namatay na nga motorcycle vlogger at may mga nadamay pang turista,” said Asec Mendoza.

“In coordination with the PNP and the LGU, we will make our presence felt in the area to run after those who are using that public road for daredevil stunts and other motorcycle-riding exhibitions,” he added.

Asec Mendoza’s order came after the reported death of motovlogger John Louie Arguelles after he crashed along with another motorcycle rider after performing the so-called Superman stunt using his motorbike.

The other rider who survived the crash is now facing criminal charges in connection with the incident.

On the part of the LTO, Asec Mendoza said they will issue a show cause order (SCO) against the survivor for him to explain why his driver’s license should not be revoked for the stunt.

Among the administrative charges he is facing is reckless driving and improper person to operate a motor vehicle.

Asec Mendoza said he expects that proper security arrangements will be discussed by LTO-Calabarzon with the local police forces to prevent the repeat of the incident.

“We would like to remind the motorcycle riders again to refrain from turning public roads as your exhibition areas. Napaka-iresponsableng gawain po ito. May mga tamang lugar para doon at hindi dapat ang mga kalsada dahil nilalagay ninyo sa alanganin ang buhay ng mga road users,” said Asec Mendoza. #
