| via JV Mahilum, THE SIZZLERS

ICYMI | Bringing together campus journalists from Bulacan State University’s main and satellite campuses, the 13th Pandayang Plaridel, an annual seminar and workshop organized by Plaridel Guild, highlighted the critical role of campus journalism in advocating for media freedom and independence. Held at the BulSU E-Library Conference Hall with the theme MAKATA: Malayang Kampus-Mamamahayag, Tagapagtanggol ng Midya’t Kasarinlan, the event unfolded last Saturday, December 14, 2024.

Keynote speaker Nico Bagsic captivated the audience with an empowering message: “Your story will not change the world; walang pakialam ang mundo sa gusto niyong sabihin. Pero, I assure you, na may isa riyan na magugustuhan ang story niyo—na magbabago ang buhay nila, and that is enough.”

Welcoming remarks from Dr. Romulo B. Mercado, Head of the Office of Student Publication, set an optimistic tone for the event. While, special guest Dr. Laura Yusi, Regional Director of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), offered her support and encouragement to the participating student journalists.

Distinguished speakers shared their expertise throughout the day. Jerome Calayag discussed the fundamentals of sports writing, while Jeaneth Dela Paz Panti provided valuable insights on news writing. Carl Espiritu explained the art of crafting compelling features, and Clarrise Inao addressed both traditional and digital journalism practices. Chairperson of the Plaridel Guild and Editor-in-Chief of Pacesetter, Sheila Natividad, closed the event with a powerful reminder of solidarity within the campus journalism community. “More than being an alliance, we are also a family. At doon tayo ay may malaking pagkakapantay-pantay,” she remarked.

13th Pandayang Plaridel reaffirmed the importance of campus journalism in fostering media independence, solidarity, and the pursuit of truth in a rapidly evolving media landscape. | via Seth Gaspe, THE SIZZLERS

LOOK | On December 11, 2024, the College of Hospitality and Tourism Management (CHTM) students gathered at the BulSU E-Library AVR 2 for the Pixelized workshop, designed to enhance their skills in graphic design. Spearheaded by Board Member Zacha Victoria, the event offered an enriching opportunity for participants to learn from industry experts.

The workshop kicked off with a talk from Mr. Evan Africa, a seasoned graphic designer from Every Nation Campus in Malolos. He emphasized the importance of developing good design habits and mastering its fundamentals. Sharing his own portfolio, which includes designs for brands like "Sikad" and "O'Fresh," Mr. Evan highlighted the significant role design plays in communication, stating, “Bad design creates confusion.”

He also clarified the distinction between art and design. “Art is subjective,” he explained, “while design is about conveying a meaning.” His talk reinforced the idea that design, much like art, is a powerful tool for expressing ideas clearly and effectively.

Following the lecture, the workshop transitioned to practical exercises. He introduced the concept of text hierarchy, emphasizing how “people don’t read, they scan.” He provided insights on how to apply key design principles, ensuring participants understood their relevance.

The first hands-on activity challenged students to design an advertisement for selling a pen within 30 minutes. One student was selected to showcase their work, and Mr. Evan offered constructive feedback to help refine their designs.

For the second activity, students were tasked with creating promotional materials aimed at attracting prospective students to BulSU. With an hour to perfect their designs, participants actively engaged in the creative process. Mr. Evan encouraged them to explain their design choices, fostering a collaborative and learning-oriented environment.

The event concluded with Mr. Evan praising the students for their efforts and encouraging them to continue pursuing their passion for design. “Keep pushing forward and refining your craft,” he said.

Pixelized's workshop proved to be a valuable learning experience, inspiring students to explore their creative potential and deepen their understanding of graphic design. | via Bea Bianca Figueroa, THE SIZZLERS

| via Jared Garcia, THE SIZZLERS

"Syempre last year, first time din namin sumali sa Battle of the Bands at hindi kami nanalo. Fulfilled kami ngayon dahil natuto kami sa naging performance namin last year.

Samantala, tinanghal na kampyeon sa kompetisyon ang College of Information and Communications Technology (Ctrl + S), sinundan ng Meneses Campus (Pink Griffins) bilang 1st runner-up, College of Science (CS Band) bilang 2nd runner-up, at makuha naman ng College of Business Education and Accountancy (Magnates Band) ang ika-5 pwesto. | via JV Mahilum, THE SIZZLERS
