On August 21, exactly 41 years ago, Benigno "Ninoy" Simeon Aquino Jr. A late Senator of the Republic of the Philippines and a known martial law critic was assassinated upon his return to Manila seconds after he stepped foot at the then-Manila International Airport Authority. His assassination awakened the nationalistic nature of the Filipinos, which eventually marked the beginning of the unified movement of the Peoples Power Revolution that historically ended the 21-year regime of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Senior.

However, this year, President Ferdinand Marcos Junior and the Malacañang moved the commemoration of "Ninoy Aquino Day" to August 23, Friday.

Despite this, let us not forget the democratic legacy and life sacrifice that once shaped our country's history.

[NEWS] CMU holds 29th commencement exercises, honors 875 graduands

The City of Malabon University (CMU) held its 29th Commencement Exercises today at the Malabon Sports Complex, anchored with the theme “CMU Graduates: Embracing Perseverance and Leading Opportunities.”

Of the graduating class, a total of 875 students completed their studies: 840 received bachelor's degrees, 27 earned master's degrees, and 8 obtained doctoral degrees, according to the graduation petition led by University Registrar Prof. Catherine Larracas.

Meanwhile, there are 119 students who graduated with Latin honors out of 840 undergraduate students: 52 magna cm laude and 67 cm laude.

Malabon City Mayor Jeannie Sandoval honored the perseverance and dedication of the graduates. She also acknowledged the sacrifices of the parents in achieving their dreams.

“As you embark on your new journey, it is essential to remember the importance of using your knowledge in service to others, especially in the challenging times,” said Sandoval.

“Recently, our nation and our beloved Malabon have faced significant challenges with Typhoon Carina. Many Filipinos, including Malabueños, have been affected by its devastation. In times like these, you are called to extend a helping hand to our fellow citizens, using your skills and resources to rebuild and support our community,” she added.

Senator Joseph Victor “JV” G. Ejercito, who served as the guest of honor and commencement speaker this year, delivered the commencement address.

He reminded everyone that in life, it is important to “pick yourself up each time you fall.” He also advised not to lose hope when facing life's challenges.

“Life is not always smooth; in reality, there are bumps and pitfalls along the way, but do not be discouraged [..] Mabigo man tayo o mahulog, dapat tayong tumindig muli. In my life, I've also had many failures. These experiences make me a stronger person; ’yan ang nagpapatibay sa atin. ’Wag po tayong mag-alala," said Sen. Ejercito.

Twenty graduating students received the Senator JV Ejercito Leadership Award

Bianca Pascual, a magna cm laude graduate with a degree in Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English, led the Pledge of Loyalty. Following this, Julie Ann Consuni, Vice President of the CMU Alumni Association, took charge of introducing the graduates to the alumni association.

Before concluding the ceremony, Maria Joana Rivera, a magna cm laude graduate with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Information Technology and a recipient of the Senator Manny Villar Excellence Award, delivered a message of gratitude.

In an interview with The Current, University President Dr. Glen De Leon, CPA, expressed his delight with the graduates' determination and encouraged them to apply their learnings effectively and contribute to the community.

The ceremony concluded with the prepared "Lumina" and ended with the graduation anthem, "We're All in This Together."

[NEWS] LIKHAAN, TPP ADVOCATES HOLD ASRHR POLICY DIALOGUE FOR THE CITY OF MALABON

Likhaan Center for Women's Health, Inc. held a policy dialogue on Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (ASRHR) for the City of Malabon today, July 31, at the Pescadores Restaurant, Malabon City.

The said event was organized under Likhaan's project on Teen Pregnancy Prevention (TPP), funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, to uplift awareness and knowledge concerning teenage pregnancy prevention in the City of Malabon with the help of the TPP Advocates.

Present at the event are several policymakers who are also expected to be supporting entities for the implementation of the ASRHR project, namely: Ms. Bernadette Estocapio-Bordador, MD, MHSS, Officer-in-Charge, City Health Office; Ms. Marie Kristine Arianne P. Loba, Medical Officer III, ARH overall program coordinator; Dr. Cecille G. Carandang, CESO VI, School Division Superintendent; and representatives from the Sangguniang Kabataan Federation.

The local executives present at the event are City Mayor Jeannie N. Sandoval, Vice Mayor Bernard "Ninong" Dela Cruz, Committee on Health, Malabon City Council Atty. Maricar Torres, and City Youth Development Unit, Ms. Ivy Dela Cruz.

"Ang layunin talaga nito ay mapababa ang numero ng teenage pregnancy. Ang nangyari ngayon sa project na ito ay namili kami ng mga maglelead ng campaign at ang gusto sana natin sila [TPP Advocates] mahasa natin yung skills nila pagdating sa advocacy, para magkaroon ng influence sila saating mga policy makers para bumuo ng mga programa para sa pagpapababa ng teenage pregnancy," said Ms. Estephanie Brigatay, project coordinator.

The policy dialogue consists of TPP advocates' recommendations for the sectors of the SK Federation, Local Government Unit, City Health, Education, and Local Executives to collaboratively aid in promoting awareness concerning the topic of ASRHR in their respective fields.

These dialogues highlighted the goals of the TPP advocates as active and trained individuals in the field of teenage pregnancy prevention to reach every sector of Malabon and introduced them to a further and enriched discussion about ASRHR through the presence and help of peer promoters.

As the policy dialogue continued to reach the local executives, City Mayor Sandoval assured that the city government had already prepared a set of projects for ASRHR.

In light of this, she also promised to give her support to push through with the Likhaan's advocacy projects.

"Marami kaming mga programa sa City Health patungkol sa prevention of adolescent teenage pregnancy. Very active kami sa Likhaan from before at nakalatag po ang mga programa nayan para sa aating mga kabataang kababaihan," said Mayor Sandoval.

"Basta po full support kami sa inyong lahat," she added.

On the other hand, Vice Mayor Dela Cruz encourages the TPP advocates to visit the office of the Vice Mayor and have an official dialogue for policymaking that is suitable to the objectives of the Likhaan.

"Upuan natin ito. Pagusapan natin ito kung ano yung magandang polisiya na gagawin para po sainyong pinaglalaban," said Vice Mayor Dela Cruz.

As the program comes to an end, Atty. Maricar Torres and Dr. Junice Demeterio-Melgar shared the things that they are looking forward to after the successful program about teen pregnancy prevention and ASRHR.

"Yung pababain yung status natin [teenage pregnancy rate] kasi right now we are number 2 in NCR. Gusto ko mawala tayo sa 1-10 na 'yun. Sana through this ma-achieve natin na mapababa yun, kung hindi man tayo mawala, mabawasan talaga ng malaki," said Atty. Maricar Torres.

"The next step would be to consolidate; ibig sabihin ay aassess namin ito kung kumusta at kung ano pa yung mga weaknesses na pwede pang palakasin at paano pa natin papalapanin—hindi lang sana Girl Power kundi Youth Power," said Dr. Junice Demeterio-Melgar.

After the event, the Likhaan Center now has high hopes that all of their recommendations and initiatives were heard and will be put as one of the top priorities. After disclosing the high rate of teenage pregnancy in Malabon, they also hope to at least have an established youth center in Malabon.

[LOOK] The House Committee on Higher and Technical Education held a hearing today on House Bill (HB) No. 1155, or the Campus Press Freedom Bill.

HB 1155 aims to repeal Republic Act (RA) No. 7079, also known as the Campus Journalism Act of 1991, which penalizes violations against campus press freedom.

The College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP) described RA 7079 as "insufficient," "outdated," and "toothless."

One of the proposed sections mentioned by CEGP national spokesperson Brell Lacerna during the hearing is Section 6 on independence. Lacerna stated, "It recognizes the student publication as an autonomous student institution and free from administrative intervention with regard to the handling of its funds, content of the publication, and selection of its publication staff."

Present at the committee hearing are Union of Journalists of the Philippines - UP chairperson Gwen Latoza, CEGP national spokesperson Brell Lacerna, UP Solidaridad executive vice chairperson Justin Daduya, and Rep. Raoul Manuel.
