April 9, 2024 | Araw ng Kagitingan
Day of Valor or Araw ng Kagitingan, why is it so highly appreciated and dearly remembered by Filipinos? What makes it so special that it needs to be declared as a national holiday?
On April 9, 1942, the Major General King of the United States Army was forced to surrender his 76,000 Filipino, American, and Chinese soldiers to the Japanese during World War II which resulted to the infamous "Bataan Death March."
The Bataan Death March had a route from Mariveles, Bataan to San Fernando which is approximately 65 miles or 105 kilometers.
Due to starvation, over fatigue, and of course the abuse of the Japanese soldiers, historians believe that over only 54,000 soldiers were able to reach the marchโs destination which was Camp OโDonell.
In June 1987, April 9th was declared as a national holiday to commemorate a memorial for the valiant Filipino soldiers who lost their lives and those who fought to be freed, nonetheless, all showing great courage.
This is why every year we show major respect once this day comes because no matter how long it may have been, it is still history. History with such a devastating experience yet filled with heroic people who deserve the most recognition from every Filipino.
