✏️Baguio City 🇵🇭 was built by the American colonial government in the early 1900s, but acclaimed Chicago architect Daniel Burnham designed it for no more than 20,000 people. The city currently has a population of 400,000, per world pop. review.

✏️Renowned architect and city planner Daniel H. Burnham, the top choice of both William H. Taft and Cameron Forbes together with his assistant Pierce Anderson arrived in the Philippines from San Francisco on 13 October 1904. A brief period of only nine (9) days for necessary field work, Burnham interviewed numerous government officials, studied available maps, hiked and rode horse to most parts of the Baguio reservation and was really impressed by the topographical layout of the proposed urban site and the spectacular scenery of the surrounding mountain area.

✏️During his trip back home to Chicago, Burnham was able to prepare a rough layout of Baguio called the Plan of Baguio, using his personal notes and materials provided by the insular government. This was presented to Secretary Taft on 05 October 1905, adopting the Garden City concept of city planning, a dominant and prevailing concept of urban development during the Beautiful City Movement era.

✏️Even with the evolution of the Baguio Plan by William E. Parsons, Warwick Greene and others who were responsible for actual layout and construction of streets, residences and public buildings, the Burnham Plan served as a powerful blueprint for the organization of space within Baguio City, and one of the pioneering endeavors in the country.

The Oro, Plata, Mata is one of the Filipino beliefs in home construction. This spanish phrase litterally means Gold, Silver, and Death.

According to this superstitious belief, any home’s staircase should never have steps that are multiple of three and the words Oro, Plata, Mata are used to define every group of three steps. If it happens that your staircase ends with either Oro or Plata it is believed to bring great fortune. And on the other end, if your staircase ends with the Mata, it said that this attracts bad fortune to all residing in the house.

According to a renowned architect, Ar. Isabelle Ong Sitco, “You count the first step as oro, the second step as plata, the third step as mata, then go back to oro as fourth step, and so on,”. While many may dismiss the belief, per the architect, many homeowners would rather include this superstition in considering and finalizing the design of their dream homes.

Where did it start? There are various speculations as to the origin of this well-accepted superstitious belief. For one, a similar belief is also present in several Feng Shui books suggesting that the origin of the popular superstition was Chinese. However, others dispute that view since in Chinese popular beliefs, it is not the number 3 that is viewed as bad, rather, number 4 is, because “four” almost sounds like “die” in their language. Another speculation on its origin is that it was a result of the colonization of the Philippines by Spain for over three centuries. A palpable evidence to this claim is the fact that the phrase itself is in the Spanish language.

RECLAIMING SPACE FOR PEOPLE

People-centered streets are streets that prioritize people over cars, and are designed to be vibrant and walkable.

They are often part of a larger vision to create more liveable cities, where people can walk and cycle to get around.

An airport made of WOOD wins the Best International Airport of the year award.

Clark International Airport (CRK) continues its winning streak, earning the title of International Airport of the Year – Philippines at the prestigious 2024 TDM Travel Trade Excellence Awards – Asia.

Together with Hong Kong’s International Design Associates (IDA), Megawide pioneered the use of Glued-Laminated Timber or “Glulam” technology in the Philippines.

IDA’s Principal Architect for CRK Winston Shu revealed that the airport’s roof is probably the “largest single roof built of GluLam in the world.”

Rubner Holzbau, a timber engineering expert firm based in Austria, supplied the glulam trusses or the wood portion of the roof, the wavy design of which is inspired by the Zambales mountain range.

The 47,800 sq.m aluminum alloy roofing was imported from Italy.

"As the next premier gateway to Asia, Clark International Airport should be designed and constructed only by the best in the world," BCDA President and CEO Vivencio Dizon said.

The Clark International Airport (CRK)—one of the country’s newest and most modern global gateways—also earned the World Architecture and Design Award or “Prix Versailles” of the UNESCO for being “one of the most beautiful airports in the world.”
