Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health concern in the Philippines, consistently ranking among the top 10 causes of deaths among Filipinos, and placing 11th in 2020 after the surge in deaths due to COVID-19 and “chronic lower respiratory infections.” It’s more common among men than women, and in people aged 25 to 55 years old.
The developments in technology have advanced healthcare: new medicines and treatment modalities, instruments, and social media support for healthcare will continue to transform the way diseases are managed, and utilizing these will be necessary to meet the country’s objective to beat TB by 2030.
Filipinos aged 10–64 years old use the internet more often for social media than research and email and spend more than 4 hours on it each day, making us the global leader in time spent using social media. Despite this, only a small portion of social media users express interest in page groups dedicated to patient education on tuberculosis or any disease or medical condition. In a survey conducted by HealthToday PH, only about 13% of the respondents stated that they have joined one. Of this 13%, Facebook was the platform of choice, followed by Viber, Instagram, and Twitter. Their most common reason for joining was to learn more about the disease, but a several respondents also admitted that they were just invited by a friend or a family member, but they weren’t really interested at all.
