The odd intonation in children with autism is often due to challenges in prosody, motor coordination, emotional expression, and auditory processing. This results in speech that may sound flat, sing-song, or overly scripted, but it reflects their unique way of processing and using language.

The use of slang by Filipino children with autism is often a result of their exposure to media, their natural tendency to mimic, and their unique ways of processing language. It reflects their strengths in pattern recognition and their attempts to interact socially, even if they sometimes struggle with the appropriate use of language.

If you’re supporting a child with autism, encouraging a balanced exposure to formal and functional language alongside slang can help improve communication skills and social understanding.
