Although today is the day when Filipinos traditionally go to cemeteries to pay their respects to their departed loved ones, November 1, in the Catholic Church, is properly known as the "Feast of the Solemnity of All Saints."

What started in the 4th century as feasts commemorating Christian martyrs has now evolved into a feast commemorating all those who, in Catholic belief, had lived a life of virtue and holiness and had become “triumphant” in the eternal battle against evil.

Still, November 1 in the Philippines had become the day when people flock to cemeteries and offer flowers and candles to the dead. It is a tradition carried over from the Mexican tradition of “Dia de los Muertes” (Day of the Dead), reflecting the cultural connections of the Philippines and Mexico during Spanish colonization.

The arrogant Davao City killer ex-mayor and ex-president Rodrigo Roa Duterte was in his boastful self before the live-streamed Senate QUAD Committee hearing last October 29. He somehow felt confident with the presence of his "lifetime" aide Sen. B**g Go, chief police loyalist Sen. Bato de la Rosa, dynast Sen. Jinggoy Estrada, and Sen. Robin Padilla who heaped praises in his opening statement of his “War on Drugs” administration.

The protectionist policies of former President Donald Trump, now poised for a return at the White House, would trigger a trade war because of his proposed universal tariff of 120 to 20 percent and 60 percent on Chinese goods, and this could trigger higher inflation and weakening of Asian currencies including the Philippine peso.

Many of us associated Halloween with horror, mystery and magic. With traditions from "trick or treat" to ghost films and horror documentaries being a staple on TV and Netflix, Halloween has become a celebration of the scary and macabre.

But not many realize that in olden times, Halloween is actually associated with holiness. The term "Halloween" comes from "All Hallow's Eve," or the evening before the celebration of All Saints' Day on November 1 and All Souls' Day on November 2. In medieval times, traditions at Halloween include ringing church bells, baking and sharing "soul cakes," and criers dressed in black calling on all Christians to remember the souls in Purgatory.
In the Philippines, these traditions have evolved into what may be our local version of "trick or treat": the Pangangaluluwa, where people, usually children, solicit people in front of their houses by pretending to be lost souls in purgatory.

All these traditions have been affected by Westernization and commercialization - and now, Halloween has evolved into a tradition of scary, but fun, activities. And like Christmas here in the Philippines, Halloween is now essentially a "children's festival."

Even as inflation receded somewhat in the past months, there's still no room for jubilation as inflation risks are tilted upwards and this could be pushed by heavy demand for food in the holidays ahead, the declining food production from recent storms and the El Niño earlier this year and global food prices remain unstable, mainly looking upward.

With the expected surge of traffic this coming Undas, Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation has reactivated its Safe Trip Mo, Sagot Ko (SMSK) motorists assistance program to ensure safe and convenient travel.

In a statement issued Tuesday, October 29, MPTC said it is ready to assist motorists through its increased personnel deployment, 24/7 traffic condition monitoring and incident response, and enhanced traffic management measures to guide motorists.

To ensure smooth travel experience of motorists, emergency and medical incident response teams will be deployed strategically within the expressways.

MPTC will also offer free towing service for Class 1 vehicles up to the nearest exit from 6:00 a.m. of October 31 to 6:00 a.m. of November 4.

Roadworks and lane closures in MPTC expressways will be suspended from October 30 to November 4, except for emergency safety repairs.

On the other hand, motorists are advised to plan their trips and may use the MPT DriveHub app which provides traffic updates, toll fee calculator, reloading facility for RFID accounts, and emergency roadside assistance.

MPTC also encouraged the motoring public to have their old RFID stickers replaced at the nearest Easytrip station or Customer Service Centers to avoid inconvenience while on the road.

“We encourage motorists to be expressway-ready by ensuring that they have sufficient load in their RFID accounts for a hassle-free journey. Let’s drive responsibly so we can all arrive at our destinations safely, and spend more time with our loved ones,” MPTC President and CEO Rogelio Singson said.

MPTC currently operates two toll roads in Southern Luzon: the Manila-Cavite Expressway (CAVITEX) and the Cavite-Laguna Expressway (CALAX).
