ORTEGA FAMILY STATEMENT ON THE ARREST OF FUGITIVE JOEL REYES

We welcome the NBI’s arrest of Palawan ex-Governor Joel Reyes, an important step in the long-overdue pursuit of justice for our beloved Doc Gerry Ortega. We also extend our gratitude to Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla for his renewed commitment in pursuing the murder case.

However, our optimism remains cautious. More than 13 years have passed, and we have yet to see the swift and fair trial that the overwhelming evidence against the former governor demands. We remember that Reyes evaded justice for over a year after the warrant was reissued—resurfacing only when it suited him. This is part of his fugitive pattern: he previously fled to Thailand and hid there for years using a fake passport.

Additionally, his candidacy for governor in the 2022 elections added further insult to injury, since he was convicted by the Ombudsman for graft and corruption and should have been automatically disqualified. This is a man who wields power to his advantage, yet plays the victim when the wheels of justice turn against him.

Despite these challenges, our family remains resolute in our belief that the truth must prevail. We continue to honor Doc Gerry’s legacy of standing with integrity, defending the defenseless, speaking truth to power, and fighting courageously for what is right.

We urge our government to uphold fairness and accountability, as the failure to do so would only embolden those in power to silence voices like Doc Gerry’s. He was not only a beloved father and husband but also a fearless radio broadcaster, environmentalist, and anti-corruption advocate—embodying the values we Filipinos aspire to live by.

If justice eludes this case, we fear the consequences for those who continue to speak out against corruption and impunity.

"Undefended: On Asia's Most Dangerous Place for Environmental Defenders" has been accepted as part of the selected grantees for Cycle 1 of the Student Film Assistance Program (SFAP) of The Film Development Council of the Philippines.

The SFAP includes a meticulous process that involves a Pre-Selection and Final Selection. After almost a month of evaluation, this documentary has secured a spot for its funding and support.

It is always an honor to represent this documentary with the goal to address the concerns of Kuya Gilbert Reyes and other fishermen from Brgy. La Huerta against the ongoing reclamation project in Manila Bay. Their bravery is the main reason for every achievement this documentary has received. We are forever grateful to them.

Regardless of the outcome, it was a privilege to sit down to a panel discussion of respected journalists: Ms. Kara David, Mr. Howie Severino, Mr. Roby Alampay, and Ms. Joyce Penares.

The real victory here was the opportunity to present our film at a prestigious journalism competition and the chance to receive an incredible lecture and insightful feedback from the masters of the field: Direk Anna Matutina, Mr. JP Soriano, and Mr. Jairo Bolledo.

Finally dropped off the Production Bible of 'Undefended', our final requirement for this year's semester, here at the University of Makati.

This 133-page book may not have the power to change the world, but here exists the backbone of our documentary; it keeps a record of what has happened, so that we never forget.

"𝐀𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐚 𝐬𝐚 𝐁𝐫𝐠𝐲. 𝐋𝐚 𝐇𝐮𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐚" 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 in the prestigious 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 under the 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐬 𝐃𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲 category. The said competition will be held at the University of the Philippines - Diliman on June 7, 2024.

After a year since its production, we are once again excited to present the story of Kuya Gilbert Reyes, a local fisherman from Brgy. La Huerta as he faces the posed threat of the reclamation at Manila Bay.
