“Connecting” Therapy: How to De-Stress

Your eyes are sore and focused on your laptop. Your spine aches from slouching and sitting all day. The tips of your fingers massage your temples. Pain and frustration overtake your body. You feel overstimulated. You feel stressed. With every tick and tock from deadlines, submissions, and homework, not knowing how to handle stress can feel overwhelming. Everyone experiences stress, whether physical, emotional, or mental. Stress is how our bodies respond to pressure or tension, especially when a situation exceeds what an individual can manage. Stress often occurs when someone is in a state of worry, prompting us to confront situations that cannot be easily managed or controlled. While this can be troublesome, it’s completely normal to feel this way.

Stress is a natural human response. When challenges arise in daily life, a surge of emotion may cause one to tremble under the weight of difficulty. However, there is a positive side to stress. It can also feel exciting—causing your heart to race with joy or motivation coursing through your veins. This is the kind of stress one might hope to experience. But what can you do when faced with negative stress or distress?

If there’s one thing humans love, it’s connecting with others. Connecting with the people you love—your friends, family, or significant other—is a wonderful way to de-stress. It’s exhilarating to hear your favorite person’s laughter, to listen as they share their day, taking your mind off your problems for a moment, or to sit in silence with a friend, both understanding the stress you’re going through. It always feels better to have a shoulder to cry on, someone who listens carefully, or just someone to grab a coffee with. Social connections can help release the stress you’re feeling.

On the other hand, some people prefer solitude—connecting with themselves and reflecting on their emotions. The hustle and bustle of crowded rooms and busy streets can be too noisy for someone who craves calm and quiet. Lying on your bed, listening to music, reading a book, or watching a movie can be the perfect escape from stress. Writing in a journal or meditating can be effective ways to cope, allowing you to engage in an inner dialogue and understand why and how a situation affects you.

Connecting therapy can work for those who enjoy spending time with loved ones after a stressful day, as well as for those who prefer to be alone, engaging in a meaningful intrapersonal relationship. Everyone experiences stress differently, and how they manage it varies. It’s important to take it one day at a time. Working hard for your future is important, but don’t forget to balance work and life.
