Lopez, Quezon - On July 17, 2024, the annual SULO celebration took place at the Philippine Normal University South Luzon (PNUSL) Gym, continuing a cherished tradition at PNUSL. The event highlighted the symbolic transfer of responsibilities, mission, and vision from graduating fourth-year students to their third-year successors, aligning them with PNUSL's core values of truth, excellence, and service.
The celebration began with an introduction to the event delivered by Dr. Roel V. Avila and Prof. Cyrene Oseña. Ms. Caryl Kate De Leon and Mr. Kirby Kenneth A. Santos, as hosts, explained the significance of the ceremony. They explained that the torch is a symbol of enlightenment that guides students towards realizing their aspirations. The torch also signifies a steadfast commitment to serve and acknowledge responsibilities to oneself, family, university, church, community, and country. It was described as a pivotal moment, marking the departure from the colonial education system imposed by past rulers.
The program's first segment, "Pagtanggap," portrayed the university’s history through the seven key figures in the Torch Ceremony: Ms. Mary Rose Macabuhay as Inang Pilipinas, Ms. Stephanie Alyssa Lladonez as Inang Pamantasan, Mr. John Lloyd Anacion as Juan Dela Cruz, Mr. James Byran Zerna as Lakan, Ms. Joyce Gruezo as Lakambini, Ms. Vivianlyn Remo as Inang Kalikasan and Mx. Brix Jorvina as Bahaghari. These characters served as guides within and beyond the university community.
Together with Inang Pamantasan was Ms. Len Rose V. Dungca, who clinched the 7th spot in the March 2024 Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers (LEPT), signifying the excellence honed by PNUSL.
All the university officials, faculty, and staff led by Dr. Leah Amor S. Cortez, the Executive Director and Provost, were in complete attendance. Representing the fourth-year students, Ms. Cindy Cantollas conveyed their collective message during the ceremonial passing of responsibilities to the third-year students, represented by Ms. Princess Maxine De Asis.
A poignant moment arrived with Mr. Byran James Zerna and Ms. Joyce Gruezo performing "Awit ni Maria" under the direction of Prof. Carlos S. Perion. The PNUSL Koro Filipino led the singing of the University Hymn. The theme "Ritwal ng Pagsasalin, Hamon, Pangako, Katapatan, at Pagmamahal" set the tone for the evening's culmination. "Pagsasalin," of the torch was was done to signify the transferring of responsibilities from graduating students to third-year students.
The evening concluded with "Paghayo or Paglisan" as third-year students, now holding the torch, bade farewell to their graduating peers, marking a transition filled with profound sentiment.
An energetic dance performance by the graduating students added a cheerful touch to the night and highlighted the second part of the celebration.
Ultimately, the evening concluded with a memorable gathering characterized by celebration, songs, dances, and camaraderie.
