A collaborative initiative by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) IOM - UN Migration and UK International Development, CREATE explores the intricate connection between climate change and human trafficking. Its ultimate goal? To foster climate-resilient and trafficking-aware communities in the Philippines.
In the Bicol Region, the municipalities of Pio Duran in Albay and Minalabac in Camarines Sur have been selected as pilot project areas. These locations are particularly vulnerable to climate-induced challenges, making them critical focal points for interventions aimed at enhancing resilience.
One standout initiative under the CREATE project is the livelihood program for 20 fishing families in Barangay 5, Pio Duran, Albay. This program centers on the establishment of a gourmet tinapa (smoked fish) manufacturing facility, addressing not only the climate challenges faced by these families but also providing a sustainable alternative livelihood.
The fishermen of Pio Duran face a dual threat: the frequent onslaught of typhoons and the increasingly unpredictable weather patterns brought about by climate change. These conditions often render fishing impossible and disrupt traditional methods of drying fish. The gourmet tinapa livelihood project aims to mitigate these challenges by offering a climate-resilient solution. Through this initiative, fishermen can process and package smoked fish regardless of weather conditions, ensuring a steady source of income even during the rainy season.
