DWCL SHS students observed DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) time on February 17, 2025. For 30 minutes, all students from SHS paused all their activities to focus on reading their chosen book and enhance their critical reading skills.

DEAR time is part of the students’ class schedule which is conducted every Monday, from 4:30-5:00 in the afternoon.

𝗜𝗡 𝗣𝗛𝗢𝗧𝗢𝗦: DWCL Opens Its 64th Foundation Anniversary

Divine Word College of Legazpi (DWCL) officially launched its 64th Foundation Anniversary on February 12, 2025, with a Holy Mass at the Nativity Chapel, presided by Rev. Fr. Michael Layugan, SVD.

Following the Mass, Fr. Layugan blessed the new Senior High School building. A vibrant motorcade then paraded inside and around the DWCL North Campus, marking the start of the celebration. The program continued at St. Joseph Freinademetz Gymnasium with a lively mass demonstration and an impressive showcase of talents during the afternoon. Day 1 set the stage for an exciting week of events.

Embracing the theme “Pilgrims of Hope: Stewards of Creation,” representatives from Divine Word College of Legazpi joined fellow students and educators at the Bikol Association of Catholic Schools (BACS) Youth Advocacy Summit 2025.

Held at Our Lady of Peñafrancia Minor Seminary in Sorsogon City from February 12–14, 2025, the summit gathered youth and mentors from various institutions. Representing DWCL were Senior High School students, Junior and Senior High School teachers, Mr. John Elliot L. Moyo, and Rev. Fr. Remigio B. Domino, SVD.

The three-day event will allow participants to reflect on their role in faith and caring for the environment, strengthening their commitment to hope and responsibility.

𝗜𝗡 𝗣𝗛𝗢𝗧𝗢𝗦: DWCL SHS Launches PABULA Project to Enhance Literacy Skills of Bongalon Elementary Pupils

On January 31, 2025, the Senior High School of Divine Word College of Legazpi (DWCL) launched the PABULA Project: A Literacy Program at Bongalon Elementary School (BES) in Brgy. Bongalon, Daraga, Albay. The program marked the start of Community Extension Services (CES) activities.

Organized by the Senior High School Community Extension Services (CES), the launching activity started with a welcome message from BES Principal Ms. Marilyn Dela Rama, followed by fun and engaging games. The event concluded with closing message delivered by CES Coordinator Mr. Robiniel G. Brinces. The activity was made possible through the collaborative efforts of DWCL SHS Principal Ms. Emma T. Alcantara, MIE, SAO Coordinator, Ms. Cristine Mae I. Biso, LPT, CES Coordinator, Mr. Robiniel G. Brinces and Senior High School students.

The program underscores the vital role of community involvement in shaping a brighter future for children through education. It also highlights how collaboration between schools and organizations can help address the learning needs of young students.

𝗜𝗡 𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡: DWCL SHS Grade 12 Students Witness Automated Counting Machine Demonstration

On January 28, 2025, Grade 12 registered voters of the Divine Word College of Legazpi (DWCL) Senior High School attended a demonstration and discussion on the Automated Counting Machine (ACM) at the DWCL South Campus AV Hall.

The event emphasized voter education as the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Region V, in partnership with the Center of Spirituality and Mission (CeSMi), conducted a dry run to showcase the ACM’s operation. As first-time voters, students gained insight on the importance of understanding how the machine works to ensure a fair voting process.

𝗜𝗡 𝗣𝗛𝗢𝗧𝗢𝗦: DWCL SHS Participates in Parade of Saints 2025

The Divine Word College of Legazpi Senior High School Department participates in the Parade of Saints for the first time as part of the Bible Week 2025 Celebration. The event featured participation from the Grade School, Junior High School, and Senior High School under the Basic Education Department. The parade took place on January 24, 2025, starting from the Grade School grounds and concluding at the St. Joseph Freinademetz Gymnasium.

The Eucharistic Celebration, held at the St. Joseph Freinademetz Gymnasium, was presided over by Rev. Fr. Vicente R. Rayco, SVD, along with guest priests from the Society of the Divine Word: Rev. Fr. Nonito Gallego, SVD, Vocation Director, and Rev. Fr. Sedfrey William Nebres, SVD.

The event was organized by the Center for Spirituality and Mission (CeSMi) through the efforts of the Basic Education Department’s CLE and Religious Education teachers. The Eucharistic Celebration concluded with the blessing of the Holy Bibles and the commemoration of the feast day of St. Francis de Sales.

Demonstrating creativity and dedication, students from Divine Word College of Legazpi Senior High School achieved 2nd place in the Short-Form Video Making contest during the UP Ibalon Padunungan 2025 in Sta. Cruz Event Center, Naga City, from January 18-19, 2025.

Jacquelene A. Ordinario, Sophia B. Soliman, Uzien B. Arevalo, and Shena Mae G. Ramirez were awarded for their outstanding skills in video making with the guidance and support of their coach, Mr. Shane O. Palenzuela.

Divine Word College of Legazpi (DWCL) Senior High School students head to Naga City on January 17, 2025, for Padunungan 2025, taking place at Sta. Cruz Event Center from January 18 to 19.

With the theme “Debunking Resilience: Intensifying the Youth’s Call for Genuine Disaster Mitigation,” the event, organized by UP Ibalon, aims to engage and inspire over 600 student-participants. This annual educational competition gathers Bicolano high school students to promote youth advocacy for disaster mitigation.

On January 17, 2025, a turnover ceremony was held at the Divine Word College of Legazpi (DWCL) Senior High School (SHS) Lobby to mark the partnership between the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Revenue Region No. 10, the DWCL SHS Chapter Club for UNESCO, and the Senior High Executive Board (SHEB). The event celebrated a successful donation drive that provided school supplies to local youth in need.

Ms. Jahnna Mae Litana, Moderator of the DWCL SHS Chapter Club for UNESCO, delivered the opening remarks, followed by Mr. Ricky U. Domanais Jr., BIR Statistician II, who expressed his gratitude for the collaboration. Ms. Cristine Mae I Biso, Coordinator of the DWCL SHS Student Activities Office (SAO), concluded the ceremony with her closing remarks.

The turnover ceremony highlighted the spirit of service and generosity. Through their efforts, the organizations supported local students by providing the school supplies they need.

𝗜𝗡 𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡: DWCL Basic Education Department Celebrates the Solemnity of St. Arnold Janssen

The Divine Word College of Legazpi (DWCL) Basic Education Department marked the Solemnity of St. Arnold Janssen, founder of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD), with a Eucharistic celebration presided over by Fr. Arnold Biago, SVD, held on January 15, 2025, at the St. Joseph Freinademetz Gymnasium. The Mass was attended by the SVD priest administrators, middle administrators, teaching and non-teaching staff, and students from Grade School, Junior High School, and Senior High School.

The celebration honored St. Arnold Janssen, who passed away on January 15, 1909, and his remarkable legacy in establishing three missionary congregations: the Society of the Divine Word (SVD), the Missionary Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit (SSpS), and the Servants of the Holy Spirit of Perpetual Adoration (SSpSAP). With faith and unity, the DWCL Basic Education Department came together to honor the patron saint and embrace his mission of service and spreading the Gospel.

On January 7, 2025, the Senior High School of Divine Word College of Legazpi gathered for the Eucharistic Celebration for the launching of National Bible Month 2025 with the theme "God's Word: Source of Hope," held at the Nativity Chapel.

The Mass, which was presided over by Rev. Fr. Vicente R. Rayco, SVD, highlighted the message that the hope found in the Bible is meant to enlighten and guide us in our lives.

On January 6, 2025, the Divine Word College of Legazpi Senior High School officially marked the start of the second semester with an opening program at the St. Joseph Freinademetz Memorial Gymnasium. The event featured the presentation of the second semester’s calendar of activities, a review of the school’s policy guidelines, and a summary of first semester highlights, to prepare for a productive semester ahead.

“𝗔𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗮 𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗴𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝘆 𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗻.”

These words remind us of the importance of remembering where we come from, and no one embodied this better than Dr. José Rizal. Mandated by Act No. 345, enacted on February 1, 1902, December 30 became “Rizal Day”—a day to commemorate and honor the martyrdom that opened the eyes of the nation.

Rizal’s writings, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, uncovered the injustices of the Spanish colonizers and inspired a movement for change. His advocacy for education and equality sparked a stronger desire for freedom. On December 30, 1896, as Rizal faced his death, he calmly said, “Consummatum est,” marking not just the end of his life, but the beginning of a nation’s journey to remember his sacrifice and learn from the past.
