Thank you for showcasing your journalism skills during the RSPC 2024. We hope to see you shine even brighter through the power of your pens and minds next year. Keep your head up high for being present in the journey. Remember that truth-telling does not end in the spotlight of competitions; it begins when it gets harder to tell the truths of your experiences and you still do it anyway.

We are always proud of you!

In the Miting De Avance (MDA) for the election on May 10, 2024 of the 2024-2025 Supreme Secondary Learner Government (SSLG), a debate between the three (3) candidates running as president was held at Legazpi City Science High School (LegaSci) Covered Court on May 9, 2024.

โ€œI want to be able to use my voice and my experiences to shape a better and thriving LegaSci,โ€ Cale Azul stated, with Den Yvan Ecleo telling that โ€œthe history [he] wants to make is that [he] was able to make an environment that each and every single student can be proud of,โ€ while Francesca Ramos said that what she wants โ€œis for the student body to remember [her] as an effective leader who actively listens, who is reliable, competent, and willing to serve the student body.โ€

Ecleo's capability to serve as SSLG President was challenged by Azul and Ramos as he had never been a LegaSci student government officer, to which Ecleo defended that he still had leadership experience through โ€œpioneeringโ€ clubs and was โ€œwilling to learnโ€ on how to serve as an SSLG officer.

Ecleo alleged that Azul stole the credit for the Idea Oasis Project, reasoning that โ€œ[she] lied about the fact that it [Idea Oasis] was [her] original idea,โ€ to which Azul responded that she had the concept of Idea Oasis as one of her platforms in the previous school government election and that she โ€œwould just like the Project Oasis to still continue.โ€

Moreover, Ramos was interrogated by Ecleo regarding her opinion on the current batch of SSLG officers, considering that she herself was the Grade 9 Representative during S.Y. 2021-2022 and the Protocol Officer in S.Y. 2022-2023. Ramos was put in the hot seat as she responded with, โ€œitโ€™s not my intent to discredit the efforts of the current officersโ€ then later followed her answer with, โ€œthe lack of information dissemination,โ€ to which she elaborated further afterwards.

Other candidates vying for the positions of Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Auditor, Public Information Officer, Protocol Officer, and Grade Level Representatives did not participate in the debate but did in the previous MDA segments.

The session started with the introduction of 12 candidates from Partido Balaog and 4 independent candidates running for the positions of president, treasurer, and grade 10 representative.

As the miting de avance moved forward to the jeopardy segment and question and answer portion, the aspirants were asked about questions relevant to leadership, accountability, and platform implementation.

Moreover, the event concluded with the presidential candidates' debate on what legacy they want to leave for the school and what they want to be remembered by.

On the 25th of March, two Pinoy bands held live performances to hundreds and thousands of attendees simultaneously in two separate venues. These events were nothing more than the grand proclamation rallies of two competing teams in the Legazpi City local electionsโ€”Team and Team .

Sponge Cola and The Itchyworms, commissioned by teams SDS and BL respectively, are popular bands who both play alternative rock and OPM, and have been active in the industry for about 20 years. Both are well-loved by the Filipinos and received huge welcomes when they performed at their separate venues on the 25th.

One might say those are all procedures in politainmentโ€”a practice of politicians employing the appeal of pop culture and other hot media in order to grab public attention and strengthen their public relations. Indeed, that is the case, and it is quite reasonable. In these times when the restrictions brought about by the pandemic are finally easing up, what could be a better development? After the initial hype for the campaigns and rallies of the national post candidates finally died down, what else could reinvigorate and shift the public attention towards the smaller, local elections? Truly an outstanding move.

Appealing to the public, tugging at the peopleโ€™s heartstrings by bringing them a live event of their favorite performers, is a clever way by both teams to start the first day of their campaigns, as it gathers an undoubtedly large group of supporters and introduces their name to them. What otherwise could have been a standard political campaign instead became a memorable event as well, as according to Sponge Colaโ€™s official Facebook post, their performance was their first gig in the country with an audience in 2 years.

However, it brings into question whether all that attended the performances were simply there for the artists, or were just supporters of the team and candidates that were behind them? Some people could be both, but no one can say for sure.

In any case, the event was a win-win for everyone. The teams got the exposure and attention they needed, the fans got to see their favorite artists perform, and supporters got to show their support. But it was merely the first day of campaigning. The responsibility still rests on both teams to keep the momentum going and truly show their will to win, and to serve.

Savor your sleep and count the days because the time for filmmaking has begun! Spearheaded by the Communicatorsโ€™ League (CoLeague) President, Jeous Bulawan, the 2022 Film Fest intends to showcase the power of storytelling amongst junior filmmakers.

Seven films featuring various social issues are set to be produced through the lenses and enactment of the participating storytellers. Grade seven participants will star in their short film entitled โ€˜Marahuyoโ€™, while another film entitled โ€˜Sulatโ€™ will be produced by the eighth-graders. On the other hand, tenth-grade participants are preparing โ€˜Incandescentโ€™. Additionally, our Senior High School students refuse to back down and will also take part in the film festival with four films under them. STEM students of grade eleven will be performing in โ€˜Walang Personalanโ€™, and grade twelve in โ€˜Pamanggiโ€™, while the collaboration of ABM and ICT of grades eleven and twelve should also be anticipated as they will perform in โ€˜Dรฉjร  Vuโ€™ and โ€˜Alpasโ€™ respectively.

Through events like these, aspiring filmmakers get to showcase their talents on a bigger stage and create audience-moving films through the stories they tell. In the series, Directorโ€™s Cut, released by CoLeague, however, alumni Film Fest producers shared that these events do not only come with opportunities but also with an array of obstacles.

โ€œIt was a milestone for me pero it was really challenging,โ€ said Erin Alarcon, the director of โ€˜Dear Orangeโ€™, which bagged the Best Film and Best Musical Score awards during the Film Fest 2019.

Yuan Mendez, the director of past films โ€˜Windflowerโ€™ and โ€˜Bulongโ€™, particularly stressed their struggles with scheduling and financing. โ€œHindi dahil sa hindi kami prepared, but because nakakapagod ipagsabay yung acads at pag-fifilm.โ€

CoLeague, Samahan ng mga Mag-aaral sa Filipino (SAMAFIL), and the Media Arts and Literacy (MAL) club joined their hands with both zeal and passion to make the event possible. Even with the delays and the time and physical restrictions, they have continued working on the event to make sure that it flows as smoothly as possible. Although preparations are underway, the schedule of the Film Fest viewing is inching nearer as the days pass.

Will these talented young minds deliver productions on par with the audienceโ€™s expectations? Will they properly showcase the social issues plaguing our modern society? Mark your calendars and keep an eye out on April 27-29 to find out!

On the opening day of local campaigns, the two main opposing teams, โ€œSa Dati Sanaโ€ and โ€œBagong Legazpiโ€, staged respective grand proclamation rallies across the province of Albay on March 25, to campaign for local positions in the upcoming May 9 elections.

Sa Dati Sanaโ€™s proclamation rally was graced by the performance of the rock band, Spongecola at Sawangan Park, Legazpi City. The event hosted the campaign of Mayoral-gunner Geraldine Rosal, running and current Vice Mayor Bobby Cristobal Team Joey Salceda, Ang Probinsyano Partylist, and incumbent Legazpi Mayor Noel Rosal for Governor.

Running in opposition is Team APG โ€œBagong Legazpiโ€ consisting of Ako Bicol Partylistโ€™s Cong. Alfredo Garbin Jr., and Alan Raรฑola, running for Legazpi Mayor and Vice Mayor respectively. The teamโ€™s proclamation rally was held in Peรฑaranda Park in the presence of the rock band, Itchyworms and actor Paolo Contis. Campaigning alongside Team APG in the event were Arriba Albayโ€™s Gov. Al
Francis Bichara, as well as the rest of Ako Bicol Partylist.
On the other hand, numerous candidates also began their campaigns in several provinces in Bicol with motorcades and other gimmicks.

Aaron Jay Bersabe, a Citinista who went to support Team Sa Dati Sana at Sawangan Park, shared his thoughts regarding the candidatesโ€™ platforms and the importance of the occurrence of the said event.

โ€œThe candidates highlighted their plans in improving the public healthcare of Legazpi City residents and I think, it should be given much attention. The good thing is, I enjoyed the rally and of course, the free concert of Sponge Cola even though I don't know all the songs, I can just keep up with the hype of the crowd.โ€

More than a third of the worldโ€™s population does not have access to the internet. Although some areas may have connections, they are usually flimsy and inconsistent.

This problem had always been a fatal flaw as having access to the internet proves to be of growing importance in building economies, expanding businesses, and even in providing students opportunities to finish their education.

To solve this, the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) has partnered with OneWeb, a well-known global communication company that delivers high-speed, low-latency, reliable internet connection to select rural areas across the country, under the โ€œIntroducing Non-Geostationary Satellite Constellations Test Deployments to Improve Internet Service" (INCENTIVISE) project. Announced on February 3, 2022, PhilSA accepted OneWebโ€™s proposal to conduct a test us conduct a test using their satellite internet services on these rural areas.

According to PhilSA Director General Joel Marciano Jr., OneWeb and PhilSA are currently in the talks, deliberating for the logistics of their joint venture which included the timeline of operations, implementation sites, as well as the more technical aspects such as documentary requirements.

The company also claims that the constellation satellite is already 60% complete, expected to reach global coverage by the end of 2022. PhilSA, however, has yet to announce when the project will commence, and which areas are expected to benefit from the project.

The INCENTIVISE project is also joined by the DOST - Advanced Science and Technology Institute as part of their vision to promote the growth of the local space industry. Surely, these are all giant steps towards providing fast and reliable internet connection to the country, especially to the technologically distant rural areas.

In a world predominantly governed by men, women are pushed into boxes of stereotypical ideals that detract them from their aspirations. Sexism and misogyny are still on the rise, and women are forced to stick to gender roles imposed by society, their capabilities overlooked.

Despite the prejudice and injustices thrown against them, numerous women are infamous for being unstoppable and fiery with purpose and attitude. An example is the feisty Miriam Defensor Santiago, the first Filipino and Asian judge of the International Criminal Court. Perceived as a position with duties only men are capable of doing, the inauguration of the late Santiago further attested to how women are equally capable given the same opportunities.

The world did not only witness the cleverness of the late Miriam Santiago. It was also enthralled by the captivating beauty of Kelsey Merritt, who made history by walking the runways of renowned brands, as well as Catriona Gray and Pia Wurtzbach, both crowned the Miss Universe not too long ago.

Bicol, too, has a remarkable woman to boastโ€“the fourteenth Vice President of the Philippines, Leni Robredo. She has launched a multitude of programs that helped thousands of marginalized Filipinos and is the only female candidate and current frontrunner for the presidency. Through her leadership, her office has consistently received high audit ratings from COA (Commission on Audit), ranked the highest for three consecutive years since 2019โ€“an exemplary performance that outdoes men in her field.

They prove that women could do a lot more than carrying and raising a child. That a woman can make it on her own, take a stand, and make her mark in the world, through whatever way she wants it to be. Women, too, are capable. Able to engulf the world with her light and reach its deepest corners, she can cast hope on the lurkers lost in the shadows.

Remember from hereon, as we celebrate International Womenโ€™s Day, โ€œBabae ka, hindi babae lang.โ€ [โ€œYou are a woman, not just a woman.โ€]

It is human nature to strive for survival. Because of this, we try a multitude of things to keep ourselves alive, determined to consistently reach our goals. We exert tremendous effort in our daily endeavors in order to achieve our dreams. We tend to focus on whatโ€™s ahead to have a better idea of what to do next.

With the monotony of work, school, and of our responsibility, we dwell and immerse ourselves too much in earthly things that we forget to take a moment in silence and pray. The season of Lent serves as a reminder that God is kind and loving, understands our shortcomings, and is willing to forgive us for our wrongdoings.

Holy week is the high point of the Lenten Season. It is characterized by penance for our sins. A way to get closer to Him and receive eternal light and guidance. And as the day unfolds, may we let our foreheads be crossed. To be led back to Him again after being lost.

The season starts today, Ash Wednesday, and ends on Holy Thursday before the Evening Mass of the Lordโ€™s Supper. The ash anointed on us today is a reminder that we mortals are in need of the grace and mercy of the Lord, and it will only be attained through reconciliation and faith in God.

Ash Wednesdays mark the start of Lenten Seasonโ€™s traditional practice, consisting of constant prayers, readings of Godโ€™s word, abstinence from meat, and fasting.

Through the Lenten Season we will remember that if it werenโ€™t for God, everything would be meaningless. We get reminded of our sins and dishonest behavior, and this celebration will pave the way for repenting and correcting these offenses. Our obligations do not only end in earthly things we do to survive. We must take care of our spirituality, as it is also what keeps us stably alive.

To keep our faith healthy, we must do works of mercy, especially unto those who have less in life, just as how the Lord does to every one of us. We must always remember Him, surrender everything, even the very last dime. And in return, we will receive forgiveness, love, and salvation. Through kindness, humility, and compassion, we will be saved from eternal damnation.

Candidates who give promising speeches and flowery words that flatter the Filipinos, thinking that a truly great future is theirs to offer. With every passing day, the 2022 Elections approach closer. Be it students or adults โ€” eligible voters or not โ€” it is a part of our right to be educated about the upcoming election.

Voter education is effective in making sure that these people are capable of following the electoral process with confidence. It allows them to cast their votes upon worthy leaders with integrity.

However, what then would the outcome be if voters knew little about how to participate in the elections? What would the outcome be they choose their new leader blindly?

In a survey conducted in Legasci on behalf of The Webbytes, eighty-five students, (two-thirds of which are registered voters), shared their stances and gave us valuable insight as to how prepared the youth are when it comes to elections.

The first part of the survey inquired the respondents who their favored candidate for the position of President was. A resounding 95% majority chose Vice President Leni Robredo, a minority of 3.5% chose Ferdinand โ€œBongbongโ€ Maros Jr., and the remaining respondents chose Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso. When asked on what basis they decided who to support, the majority cited the candidateโ€™s background and credentials as their main influence.

Gaining knowledge of the candidate and their platforms will serve as a starting point for you to know who is competent, who has plans for the country, and who has the skill for leadership.

Research and read credible sources about the candidates to develop good judgment. Avoid bias, be open-minded, and allow others to educate your lack of knowledge on a particular issue. Donโ€™t be swayed by those who came from graft, corruption, plunder, and political dynasties that did more harm than good.

Aside from knowing the candidates, one must be aware of horrendous acts that are used in order to unfairly climb up and throw the others down; bribing or vote-buying, online propaganda, and offensive deeds aimed towards the candidates.

Of the 85 respondents of the survey, a worrying 77.6% have reported either witnessing or experiencing these acts themselves in smaller, barangay-level elections.

These are pervasive during elections and are highly unethical; candidates are supposed to run as equals and be fair among the other aspirants. Note that instead of turning a blind eye, these instances should be reported immediately.

โ€œSomeone who votes for the well-being of the country, and not because they idolize their chosen candidatesโ€, stated one student as an answer to our query on how they would describe a smart voter.

There is no need to bow down on these candidates as it is their primary responsibility to serve the country and its people. To the voters, keep in mind that your vote is powerful enough to either create a prosperous tomorrow or cause Filipinos to suffer for another six years.

Become the embodiment of a smart voter. For votersโ€™ knowledge is a step towards a successful election. A step towards possible change.

Through time, the world has developed, beliefs and customs have evolved. In between the pages of history books are male-dominated stories covering their victories in politics to arts, where the voices of women and youth were not entirely heard. But nowadays, many have, more or less, gained the power and freedom to represent themselves and place their mark in society.

Life springs from the youthโ€”an era of growth, discoveries, and changes. Youth-led advocacies and campaigns are on the rise, giving impact to hundreds of people. Project SMILE (Simple but Meaningful Acts Intended to Leave a Lasting Effect) is a Filipino youth-led nonprofit organization that started in 2018, founded by Sam Tamayo, with the goals of enriching the welfare of the disadvantaged and underprivileged Filipinos.
