Today, we commemorate the birth of General Carlos P. Romulo, on January 14, 1899, in Camiling, Tarlac. He was a prominent journalist and diplomat, and the first Filipino to hold the presidency of the United Nations General Assembly during its fourth session from 1949 to 1950.

General Carlos P. Romulo was the only person to be with American forces when General Douglas MacArthur returned to Leyte on October 20, 1945, to free the Philippines from Japanese occupation. During his service, he assumed several top posts, including serving as President of the University of the Philippines and Secretary of Foreign Affairs.

He received the Pulitzer Prize for Peace in 1941 due to an excellent pre-war analysis of the Pacific military situation. In 1948, he headed the United Nations Conference on Freedom of Information in Geneva. Disenchanted with the Liberal Party, Romulo attempted to run for the Philippine presidency in 1953 under a third-party banner but withdrew later to back Ramon Magsaysay of the Nacionalista Party. He openly denounced both communist repression and Western colonialism at the 1955 Bandung Conference in Indonesia.

Later in his career, Romulo eventually turned against his stand about a free press, praising President Ferdinand Marcos' declaration of martial law in 1972. He later shifted his stance from being an advocate for a free press to attacking the Western media for its several portrayals of developing countries. However, some of his literary contributions were recognized when he was declared a National Artist for Literature in 1982. He died on December 15, 1985, at the age of 86.

The growing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is expected to impact workforce significantly as 41 percent of different companies worldwide are planning to reduce their workforces by 2030 due to the utilization of AI, according to a World Economic Forum (WEF) survey released last January 8.

The survey has also reported that 77 percent of its respondents have shared their plans to upskill and reskill their existing workers to promote better workforce with AI. Jobs like postal service clerks, executive secretaries, and payroll clerks are said to be the most impacted workers as they are expected to experience the fastest decline on the upcoming years.

“The presence of both graphic designers and legal secretaries just outside the top 10 fastest-declining job roles… may illustrate GenAI’s increasing capacity to perform knowledge work,” the report said. Expressing concerns on the expected decline.

With AI’s increasing demand, almost 70 percent of the companies are planning to hire workers with skills that can design AI tool enhancements while 62 percent have intended to recruit more people with better skill to work alongside AI.

While the report highlights that the impact of generative AI is expected to focus more on “human-machine collaboration” rather than outright job replacement, many workers have already been replaced by AI in the recent years. Some tech firms including Dropbox and Duolingo have cited layoffs due to the utilization of AI.

Despite having a persistent cough, Kingdom of Jesus Christ leader and FBI Most Wanted Apollo Quiboloy with his Legal Counsel Atty. Israel Torreon, pursued bail at the Pasig Regional Trial Court branch 159 around 8:00 a.m. last Monday, January 12.

Torreon explained that they have filed a petition for bail, arguing the evidence against Quiboloy is not strong.

The private complainant, known only as "Amanda" has already undergone direct examination, but the defense has yet to conduct a cross-examination due to the length of her testimony.

Meanwhile, the private prosecutors representing "Amanda" expressed readiness to present further evidence to substantiate Quiboloy's guilt. They aim for the dismissal of his bail motion, asserting their client's confidence in the truth of her statements.

"Kasi ‘pag nagsasabi ka naman ng totoo, handang handa ka naman kasi wala kang kailangan i-twist sa mga sasabihin mo so handa po ‘yung kliyente namin," stated Atty. Joeie Domingo.

Atty. Ian Enterina emphasized their determination to prevent Quiboloy from securing bail, highlighting their accusations of his involvement in human trafficking and other severe crimes.

"Consistent with our claim—he is a human trafficker, an abuser, a ra**st, and gusto namin na hindi siya manalo," Enterina said.

The preliminary hearing continues as both sides prepare to present their complete evidence in the case.

The "Preso Noon, Global Worker Ngayon" of the Community Extension Services (CES) of the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA (UPHSD) has secured 2nd place in the 2024 Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA) Search for Best Practices in Community Outreach Programs.

The award recognizes the transformative initiative "Preso Noon, Global Worker Ngayon," authored by Dr. Josephine Dasig, head of the CES, which provides rehabilitation and skill-building opportunities for Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL), preparing them to reintegrate into society as global professionals.

The recognition ceremony took place at the College of International Tourism and Hospitality Management (CITHM) Lobby, celebrating the program's impact in equipping individuals with education and skills for life after incarceration.

Dr. Dasig expressed her gratitude, emphasizing the importance of the UPHSD-Bilibid Extension Program, which offers free tertiary education in BS Entrepreneurship and a free Senior High School Program to PDL.

"This is the university's best way in helping them transform and renew their lives, particularly when they join the free society," Dr. Dasig said.

This is the third consecutive year CES secured an award from PACUCOA, with the first being awarded in 2022, where the office won first place with the "Sustainable Employment After Prison Education" program, and again in 2023, with the "Shaping the World Through a Cube: ASEANSAT Project of UPHSD," co-authored by Dr. Dasig and Engr. Lorena Ilagan, Dean of the College of Engineering.

Notable alumni from the Bilibid Extension Program include Pastor Peter Villarin Jr. of Arise and Shine Community Church in Cabuyao, Laguna; PJ Peter Dun S. Ballon, a Teacher II at Irosin North National High School in Irosin, Sorsogon; and Joel Maala, a current Master’s in Management student.

Today, we commemorate the day Sultan Mohammad Dipatuan Kudarat of Maguindanao was officially recognized as a national hero of the Filipino people for his leadership and valor in defending his homeland against Spanish colonization on January 13, 1975.

Born in 1580, Kudarat was a direct descendant of Shariff Kabungsuan, a Muslim missionary to 14th-century Mindanao. After his father, Sultan Buisan, died in 1602, he took over the rule of the Maguindanao Sultanate, repelling multiple Spanish conquests during his 52-year reign from 1619 to 1671 and maintaining the independence of his sultanate and the Muslim faith in Mindanao.

In September 1973, President Ferdinand E. Marcos sent Letter of Instruction 126 and Sultan Kudarat commemorative stamps were issued in tribute to his work. He was inducted into the National Hall of Fame on January 13, 1975, as a martyr of the Filipino guerilla struggle and resilience that would motivate younger generations to admire liberty and independence.

The Philippine Olympic Committee has announced that the country will send 20 athletes to compete in six out of the 11 sports at the 2025 Asian Winter Games in Harbin, China, from February 7-14.

Their goal is to lay the foundation for a potential medal in the 2026 Winter Olympics.

"We've already achieved the dream in the Summer Olympics, and now we aim to accomplish the same in the Winter Olympics," said Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino.

The Curling Winter Sports Association of the Philippines will field 10 athletes, including Marc Angelo Pfister, Enrico Gabriel Pfister, Christian Patrick Haller, Alan Beat Frei, Jessica Pfister, Benjo Delarmente, Kathleen Dubberstein, Leilani Dubberstein, Sheila Mariano, and Anne Marie Bonache.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has lifted its three-year ban on new electronic money issuers (EMIs), paving the way for fresh competition in the Philippine e-wallet market.

The move is expected to drive down fees charged by leading platforms, GCash and Maya. GCash currently charges two percent for over-the-counter transactions exceeding PHP 8,000 a month, PHP 5.00 for bank account cash-ins, one percent for PayPal and Payooner top-ups, and PHP 15.00 for bank and e-wallet transfers.

With 42 non-bank EMIs and 27 EMI banks now licensed, experts predict intensified competition, potentially leading to more affordable services, improved features, and enhanced user experience.

However, GCash and Maya's market dominance may persist due to their superior capital, market presence, and established customer base.

Steph Lazo, who played a crucial role in the tournament opener against China with four goals, delivered another standout performance in the bronze medal match by scoring five goals, while Sarah Nelson, Lizzie de Guzman, and Cat Roxas each contributed three points to strengthen the team’s effort.

Following their 2-0 start in the Asia-Pacific event, the Philippines secured a spot in next year’s world championship, the country's first time in history to participate in this world tournament.

10/01/2025

The Light Rail Manila Corp. (LMRC), operator of LRT-1, has proposed a fare hike to the Department of Transportation (DOTr) that seeks to increase the boarding fare to PHP 18.15 and the distance fare to PHP 1.65 per kilometer.

LMRC spokesperson Jacqueline Gorospe stated that this fare increase was submitted “as part of the periodic fare process” that dates back to the 2015 Concession Agreement stating that operators can increase fares by 10.25 percent every two years. Gorospe also added that the increase would help address the growing fare deficits, which have reached PHP three billion by the end of 2023.

If approved, fares will increase by P8.65 for short-distance travel (less than five kilometers) and PHP 12.50 for long-distance travel (more than 16 kilometers). With this proposed increase, a single journey ticket would cost a minimum of PHP 25.00 (up from PHP 15.00) and a maximum of PHP 60.00 (up from PHP 45.00), showing an average increase of PHP 7.48 per passenger.

This caused the militant group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) to express their opposition to the filed petition.

Bayan president, Reynaldo Reyes Jr., denounced his opposition on the hike and called the privatization contract, “grossly disadvantageous to the public,” expressing how the private operator justifies the increase solely based on contractual obligations, without considering the commuters.
